- This week's session features music by Australian surf-rock trio, Skegss. Skegss performed two songs, "Under the Thunder" and "Bush TV," off their new album, Rehearsal, accompanied by art created by Jack Irvine.
Skegss, originally from Byron Bay, New South Wales, is currently made up of Ben Reed (lead vocals/lead guitar), Jonny Lani (drums), and Toby Cregan (bass guitar). The band formed in 2014 When Lani and Reed reconnected and decided to play small gigs and create their version of So-Cal surf rock.
In 2014, their breakout single, "L.S.D.," gained the attention of Australian Alternative radio station Triple J. With new found traction, Skegss released two E.P.s; 50 Push Ups For a Dollar followed up by Everyone Is Good At Something, and the band toured across Australia.
Skegss's latest album, Rehearsal, dropped on March 26, 2021, earning the band its first ARIA (Australian Recording Industry Association) number one album. A massive accomplishment in any period, but with the obstacles of a global pandemic, one the band was incredibly proud to receive. Leading up to the album's release, guitarist Toby Cregan revealed to music mag NME how the uncertainty of the pandemic influenced his ability to find a creative rhythm. "I was pretty tripped out by the lockdown; we weren't doing anything. I was trying to write songs but wasn't inspired." But that ultimately the experience was a gift, stating, "I learnt how to record songs better, that gave me purpose."

Art from this episode comes from artist Jack Irvine. Jack grew up in the coastal suburb of Sydney, Australia and at eight years old began to experiment with color and composition. Today, his work still holds an endearing and charming spirit that has found its way into the hearts of exuberant musicians like surf-rock band Skegss, pop star Troye Sivan and Grammy winner Billie Eilish. Irvine's work has found its place on the world's stage while holding true to his unique vision.
