Thank you for this video. I've always known about animation layers but never really learned how to use them from scratch. If I started an animation on the base layer, for example- facial animation, can I copy it and create a new layer with that existing animation? I need to experiment with that.
Hahah go figure I find a great tutorial to explain anim layers... and then I see bubble guppies, and then I hear a voice I know pretty well! Wicked stuff Chris thanks a bunch :)
@@CheekyAnimationProductions Yeah it caught me by surprise to hear it mentioned! I'm in Toronto, although technically I work from home outside the city right now.
Nice, yes I'm working for portfolio entertainment from Mississauga. I was on bubble guppies season 2 and 3 when I was.at Nelvana. You must be working for Jam Filled, I was also there.
1. In Unity animation, there are "States" which are seperate animations, and you can control when animation 2 comes on, when animation 1 comes on etc etc. is there anything like this in maya? 2. You mention weights, can you control/program them in such a way that you determine when the weight of a particular animation goes up, and when it goes to zero??
1. You can simply slide the keys over to the second timeline to have the animation start later. Or use the trax editor. 2. The weights slider at the bottom of the layers area is keyable. I believe I mentioned this near the end of the video.
question is, can you animate the weight, so for example have the acting layer as the base layer, and then add the hover on top of that and then turn the hover up and down at certain points so if you had a scene where you were flying straight you could turn it off. Or would this just be done as two separate animations and then edited together later. I'm suuuper new to animation if that isn't obvious.
Yes, you can animate whatever you want on the base layer and then whatever you want on any additional layers. And turn the animation on those layers up/down. And key it as well.
hi im a newbie in animation, i am trying animate a scene in maya that switches from fk to ik and back. i want to re-time the keys so i need to select both ik and fk controls and thatsb where i stuck at, could you kindly help how i can go about it?
Hi, loved your tutorial! Would you be kind enough to solve a quick question for me? I am animating a scene in which my character is walking, then his stomach growls, so he gets impressed, stops or slows down his walking speed while he grabs his tummy, because he is hungry, and then walks again. I´ve used baking my inf curves and animating manually, but the result is always unnatural. I think animation layers could really help, but there is NOTHING on the internet to help me and I am freaking out :( Please help, it would be really nice if you could answer here or even more, to make a video, I am sure you could have thousands of views since no one talks about that. THANK YOUUU
You just animate the walk cycle on your original time line. Then create a new layer and name it "acting". Then animate him holding his stomach or whatever. You can use the layer slider to tone down the walking as shown in the video.
Make sure you hit the correct button to create the layer. Select curves/joints to be animated, then hit far right button to create the layer. Finally, right under word "Anim" is "Options" - make sure first choice is selected - 'key into selected layer'. I just started messing around with this as well. Trying to keep an open mind, but feeling like MoBu is still the way to animate, especially dense animation from mocap.

Hello, I am experiencing a problem in Maya 2016. I am trying to make two image sequences, played on two different objects, start at different times. I tried different animationlayer options and image-offset options, but I found no solution, the image sequences still start at the same time. Anyone got any idea on how to solve my problem? Thanks in advance!
@@CheekyAnimationProductionsThanks! I am using just one camera which is going to pan from the first object to the second. At the start on the first object, the first Image sequence should start playing and end, after that the camera pans to the second object with the second image sequence, which is supposed to start playing once the camera is there. A keyframe that starts an image sequence is basically what i am looking for, but so far i could only set keyframes for the transformations of objects, not image sequences.
Great explaining, however I have NEVER in the tens of thousands of youtube videos I have watched had one that is casuing my head to hurt, not sure what those weird background noises are.

Dont just "Merge Layers", use the option box to set it to "Smart Bake". That will create keys where its necessary and not on each frame.
where is this smat bake?
