Picked up a lady in the evening, friendly conversation. She tells me she’s reserved a 150 mile trip for the next morning and wonders if it may come to me. Asked her how much was she paying Uber, $400 she he said, I offered to take her for $300. She said “that’s unfair, I’ll give the $400 cash, pick me up at 8am”
Good job but you have to be careful you're not getting fished. If you're caught doing this police can tow your car and fine you (on top of impound fine)
Very good logic and seeing your calculations. I dont drive uber. I dont know if id want to put 200 miles and 4 hours for 1 trip. The $206.00 seems a bit low.
I took one very close to that a couple weeks ago, mainly because the timing was ok and I wanted to test out the NYC driving. The $16 Holland tunnel charge sucked out a lot and then no tip. Not great. More charging time for me but no fuel costs so plus and minus there... Overall I could possibly go either way but I certainly wouldn't jump for another one...
Great topic, great video. You drove almost 300 miles less. Extrapolate that out over a year, and that is massive savings. Reducing repair cost and accident cost is huge.
That trip actually costs $789.45 without tip or tolls. 20% mandatory gratuity because that driver has to drive back 224.7 miles back to his/her township and pay tolls again, since it's highly unlikely he/she will get a return trip. Actual Total fare is $947.34. Based on NYC rates of course.
The first trip was going to the Columbia university area and the second trip was going to the time square area two totally different trips and the second one was going to hit you over the head
I envy the fact that ya can see where you’re going to drop in NYC it’s only time based how they show the trip and you have to have an 85% plus accepting rate to see that lol
Is it a foregone conclusion that the entire return trip would be an empty leg? Would your calculus change if you thought you could get another long ride in the other direction?
It is amazing that this kind of advice and free intuitive information is out here and still there desperate drivers. This is why Uber is still treating us like nothing.
Wheres the calculation for tolls. Theres going to be at least one toll going into new york city from upstate new york. Either throughway and or bridges.
That's a negative, Ghostrider, on that trip. During track season here in Saratoga I see a lot of trips to NYC & NJ. I don't take them and I'm closer to NYC than you. Something else to consider: Theoretically, you could've gotten a trip or two on the way home which would've increased your income and possibility of tips.
A four hour ride -- each way for $200? That's the entire day. I don't think that would work for me. If there was a cash-side-tip for about $250+ more, then sure.
Nope. You have to assume most (if not all) of the return trip is going to be deadheading. Lets' do the math. True distance: 250 miles True time: 8.5 hours Estimated expenses (at $0.35/mile): $87 Net after expenses: $118 Net Hourly: $14 per hour. If you're in the mood to be driving for the next 8 hours, there might be a good private ride conversion opportunity here. I'd wager uber is charging the rider somewhere in the neighborhood of $400 give or take. Do the math on $400 for the trip. ($400-$87)/8.5 = $36.80 per hour. Not earth shattering, but far more palatable. An interesting thing I've discovered on some of these kinds of long trips, about 15-20% of the riders are going to need a ride back later in the day. Although if you're going to do that, get at least a 50% non-refundable deposit UPFRONT. The flake rate can be pretty high.
You wouldn’t wanna work in Orlando then because they do not tip well down here list the five star drivers don’t really tip that well and that’s a rarity for me. I got nothing but mainly five star drivers all day I mean riders and only two of them tipped out of the 18 rides I did.
When I take long trips it's because I feel like doing something different, seeing another part of my State. Possibly having a great interesting conversation. It's never profit because I'm going to drive home empty. The 1hr trips to a city near by I can get ride back and if that happens it's really good. But going 4hrs you have 0% chance of a ride back. And your math just proves to me that people driving those crossover SUVs don't make money ever. My Model 3 std range is $0.18 per mile no matter how I run the numbers, that's as high as I can go. And that's after 80,000 Uber miles in 14 months. It's all about your cost per mile!
I would have pulled up and ask the rider for $400. I would have been upfront and told the ride that the Uber fare is too low and I will accept $400. But, the rider has to cancel the ride and then I will switch off my app. I did that recently to a rider. I ask for $20 and she said her smallest bill was $50. I told her I don't have change and she said to keep the change. She paid me $50.
😃:”Hello sir would like a discount on this ride? I’ll do it for $400” 😁: “sure you just saved me $75…your a smart guy” 😀:”no problem…at first I was gonna decline and make 12 UA-cam videos to try and make up the loss but thank god common sense came along!”
Hard pass on the 4.80 rating long distance. Ask yourself, do you really want to ride 4-5 hrs with a person rated low. They could be very high maintenance, bad conversation, etc... and no tip? Im like you Levi, i work for and earn big tips. It involves more dead miles, but i write off all miles door to door daily. I prefer 20-30 mile airport runs. I dont like to brag, but because i work those kinds of trips, i get tips 90% of trips.
I would Never take a trip like that after gas and tolls maybe only make 140 profit and put 400 miles on car uber is crazy I don't know how they get drivers it's the cheapest and worst company I ever worked for I really dislike them
From someone who has been driving for 10 years, 30, 000 rides (same car I should point it out), I do not expect tips. The riders are being ripped off already. And I do not accept rides that pay me more 30 dollars a pop, because they are not worth it. You do your math!
But there’s a difference between me and you I do not drive an electric car. I drive a gas car which I would’ve took that trip filled up my gas and worked where I was. I’m making another $200.
It's like this Levy you can't win them all but there is a butt in the butt is you just got to know where the hot spots are at in your area.I know where my hotspots are at in my area and all it takes is a little patience not everyone is going to tip especially in my area so you got to find other cities that you know they got money and it's really simple you just got to know in the area how people are living and that's your answer❤
Sound logic... however... i would love if UBER made these long trips worth it for us... i don't think there is anyway they can because the margin is too small... however I would much prefer to do one, two or three trips per day as opposed to 20-25 trips... why? while most people are perfectly fine.. it's the law of averages... Deal with 3 people per day or deal with 25? Yes the short trips are the most profitable in terms of dollars per mile, at least in Albany.. but like i said... Dealing with all those people could present issues depending on your market.
I wouldnt have taken it. I don't do long trips. They're rarely ever worth it and I really can't stand having strangers in my car for any longer than 10-20 minutes. Short and sweet trips for me all day!!

You can always accept the trip then ask the passenger for a return fee to get you back home. Paid upfront , cash or Venmo before you go. If they decline, cancel the trip. Depending on the time of day, you may have to get a hotel room to sleep. Add the hotel room to the return fee. All rides should make sense for the driver, or why do them? It's crazy to lose money on a ride as soon as you start driving. The Uber fee, plus the return fee is still probably cheaper than a cab ride. The cab rides build in the return fee. Uber doesn't.
I understand why you declined that long trip but I would had taken that fare. Moat of my best tips come from either airport runs or long drives like that. At least you didn't have to put a lot of miles on your car.
Uber math. They are paying hourly as promised. Put in trip request and see what the passenger would be paying. I took a long trip passenger paid $200 I got $48 no tip, only reason I took it was on my way home, at 3 A.M. in my region, the promise is $24 per hour. Took 2 hours exactly. Uber math....I did on another quiet day get the difference of $20 added after I clocked out.
