I love tying and fishing wet flies, they’re so fun to tie, encourage creativity in material selection, and are a great way to fish your way downstream if access to a stream is limited to only the upper reaches
Nice , wets flies are just fun to tie there are endless variations to keep you going at least into February . Your right about not many people fishing them it’s old school and not a lot fly fisherman think of using them . I think part of the reason is if you don’t tie your not exposed to them and you don’t see many in the fly shops although they are making a comeback . Thanks for sharing.
Great video Kelly! Ive never been a big fan of the wing on a wet fly but you've just made it look way to easy to do! Im gonna sit down at my desk and give a try right now!! Thanks again!!
Want to say thanks, I got the best piece of X Caddis or deer hair I’ve ever purchased from you. I can tie 20’s with this stuff. Natures Spirit X caddis hair
Nice! Love the variations in wing materials and tying methods. Especially useful for me because I cannot seem to get duck quill wings to sit to my satisfaction. Half of my wings end up being crinkled incorrectly.
3 questions What specific rod would be best to fish wetfly's in a big river and could crossover to lake fishing. I where looking ad a Hardy trout LL 4 weight 9.9ft Second question what are we trying to achieve and represent or what makes a wetfly a wetfly. Third Question what kind of hook and which size would you recommend. Thnx wesley
Hey Kelly, got any favorite flies for "winter" fishing? Here in Virginia east of the blue ridge it rarely gets below the 20's. I have been trying to catch some stocked trout but they don't seem to care for any of my flies
I am frugal and sometimes use scraps laying on my table from other ties to make up a pattern “on the fly” … some have proven surprisingly effective! Some of the effectiveness is how you fish em not necessarily the pattern, imo!
I have been tying for over 50 years and never folded back my hackles on wet flys because I never knew it was a thing till I started watching these videos on the internet….self taught! It has never seemed to effect the fly’s ability to catch fish and I have caught 10’s of thousands in my life so imo it is not very important??
Another 19 minute video for a 5 minute tie, but the 14 minutes was probably more valuable than the 5 minutes. Keep the good stuff coming buddy.
You are right..I live in the east and virtually never fish dry….never found the need …. started in the 60’s fishing wet and still do!

NONE OF US ARE PERFECT .RIGHT ! 🤠👍Thanx Kelly. Ken from Calgary AB.
Thanks Kelly! Like you I grew up fishing wet flies. Enjoyed the encouragement to be creative with material selection.

Winged wets are among my favorites to tie but I hardly fish them
I like that wing

I think that’s similar to a technique that Cal Bird used in the Birds nest.
That is a wild way to hold scissors as you talk at around the 4 minute mark
It's good to see that Kelly is human like the rest of us - that hackle gave him a few issues, eh🙂
