Maybe the Wonderswan handhelds would've made it overseas as opposed to my having had to import one. lol Seriously, who knows. If he still worked for Nintendo, maybe the Wii would've been better in the sense that it would've had a design where you can do motion-play and non-motion as opposed to trying to be gimmicky and trying to use motion controls with pretty much a majority of the games outside of the older games you can dl through Virtual Wii.

+referral madness A fuck up in Nintendo's part, not Yokoi's. Like forcefully presenting an unfinished project at school because your partner said so and then taking the blame for it.

I wonder why that first Virtual Boy design got scrapped. It looks like it would have been a lot less uncomfortable on the player's neck, and it actually looks cooler than the bipod design (imo at least). It wouldn't have solved any of the photosensitivity-related issues, of course.
They also could've scrapped the straps for the virtual boy due to it be front heavy and would have to be held up by a stand, so that could be why. (I don't know the weight of the virtual boy. This is just a guess.)
its so funny how people think Nintendo is horrible when without them not only would there not be so much of the things we call normal in games today but they were ultimately what inspired companies to enter the gaming world with their success
I reckon mankind would still be as technologically advanced today without the invention of the Gameboy. Maybe gaming would be more advanced. Certainly though with today's technology, Handheld gaming would still be present. You can find examples on the net of old gaming machines being used to a modern potential. Maybe the Gameboy, other old consoles and industry standards did actually slow the gaming industry and capability of machines.
Agreed. I think the Dreamcast had a similar problem. Good game library, great tech, but in that console's case, the tech was too pricey at the time, so it failed. Then the PS2 came out, and we all know how that went.
JJAB91 "Too ambitious for its time, the technology required simply didn't exist yet" is the best way to sum up Nintendo's entire lifespan and achievements.
4:09 NO. It was Hyundai who sold Nintendo games in behalf of Nintendo. Samsung sold Sega games and its gaming system. After Hyundai Electronics decided to discontinue selling Nontendo products a company named Daewon started to import games and the system directly from Nintendo of Japan, until Nintendo finally decided to enter the Korean market around 2007. And I can't believe that no Korean actually pointed this out.
I like handhelds better than consoles today because of games, cheap price, portability and did I mention games? Modern handhelds today have backlit and 3d graphics. Nuff for me! I'm probably a rare kind of gamer in the west but in Japan this is common
tandem1963 technically yes but as you can see the graphical detail wasnt that great either and may very well have contributed to its failure... 3d gaming does exist cough 3ds cough, and does better than the virtual boy ever did... Hardware improvements i say.
The reason why the Game Boy worked when it did over the higher technology systems, was because kids weren't spoiled about graphics. Now most gamers are overly whiny about graphics over gameplay.
The reason the Virtual Boy failed because it wasn't a complete system. Nintendo wanted to move the development staff to the n64 team and the Virtual boy was rushed
Geek from The inter-nate That's a load of crap, very few actually get headaches while playing, and it's mostly due to an improperly focused system. In fact, the Virtual Boy could help exercise your eyes and can improve your vision. Developers were even looking at building special applications for doing this before the system was cancelled. And don't give me that crap about being only Red killed it, the Gameboy pocket was released after the VB, with a way worse screen, and everyone loved it. I think it failed because of terrible marketing, and the anti-social nature of playing the system. If they actually had released the link cable alongside it with some cool 2 player games that properly took advantage of the systems strengths it could have been a much different story.
maybe, i mean it would still be a failure but at least it would have been a bit less terrible (that console has no games, caused nausea.. but hey at least you could wear the VR headset)
Yokoi also created Wario. And thanks to Miyamoto's stubbornness with things not created by him, we will never have a proper Wario Land/World sequel ever.
It wasn't that long ago that we got a Wario Land game for the Wii, but yeah, it would be nice if we got another Wario game that's not Wario Ware. I used to dream about getting another Mario platformer game where Wario is a playable character, but... that dream is a bit dead now.
To be fair, the concept of Wario was made by Yokoi, but Wario himself was designed by Hiroji Kiyotake. I can't find info on who actually designed Daisy, but since Yokoi created Super Mario Land as well, her creation could be credited to him as well.
I use to own a GameBoy Nintendo has been a huge part of my life first I had a GameBoy and then later on me and my family had a N64 I use to have a Nintendo 3DS XL (I lost it) and now I have a Wii.
Surprised you didn't mention the fact that Yokoi was actually murdered via a Yakuza assassination plot masterminded by the chairman of Nintendo at the time, Hiroshi Yamauchi.
There were multiple ones, basically games similar to what you would find on a Magnavox Odyssey (if you don't know what it is just Google). The most famous of these were Pong, also called Color TV-15
Wait wait wait... A Game Boy, survived a EXPLOSION, during the Gulf War? And it still functions perfectly, just the cosmetics and such is just morphed? ...HOLY FUCKING CEREAL CRUMBS, THAT GAME BOY MUST HAVE BEEN AN OX IN DISGUISE! I guess this just helps the thought about older consoles being more durable and less fragile to be true. "You could drop a TV on a N64 and it would be fine" a friend of mine says...
Nintendo has always lived 1 generation before their time. (Gameboy being behind sega technology and atari) yet. theyve always come on top. Wii U will be fine
Narwhal King It wasn't that the virtual boy was bad. I own one and it was amazing at the time. Had they tested how the display when combined with the positioning of the head worked together prior to release, it may've been a success. Or if they had just released the head mounted version instead.
***** Yes, the Virtual Boy was a poorly system, but it's really also a tragic one. It was - and you can really see this in it's design and how it's launch was handled - an incomplete system that was pushed out before it was read, and really should have been a prototype. There's even evidence the system had been intended to at least be head worn, but instead was rushed out with a clumsy stand. It's a shame, because some of the games on it, like Teleroboxer and Warioland, were actually -very- good games. Not that all of it's games were, because Waterworld was one of the most phenomenal pieces of garbage ever coded. In the end, whatever the reason, the Virtual Boy ended it's life as a mistake. One to be learned from. No console/game company is without failures, if they've been around for any length of time.
I had a Game Boy Camera when it came out. I got the Game Boy banned entirely at my school because I took a photo of a kid and stamped a big nose on him and then showed it to him at recess. He told the teacher on me :( That was a mistake.
Hm, I wonder... If they went with the "strap on goggle" design for the Virtual Boy and maybe added an option to turn the 3D off, maybe it wouldn't have been such a failure...
Anddo Nah, just because you can turn off 3D on the 3DS it isn't a DS. I thought that it would have been a good idea to make 3D optional so that people who get sick from 3D could still have used the console.
CoxTH Not the same analogy. The 3DS without the 3D still has the superior technology. The Virtual Boy used the same architecture as the Game Boy, the only differing element was the 3D and its red tint.
Anddo game boy had a 8bit 4.2 MHz processor and virtual boy had a 32bit 20MHz processor. Not the same architecture at all. Virtual boy may be crap, but in what world a game boy would be able to move a game like Red Alarm?
I've always loved old games, especially the ones from Nintendo. So one day, my day bought me a Game Boy and three games for it, Tetris, Golf and Kirby's Dream Land. I owed him 1200 crowns (the Swedish currency) but it was worth it. Since that day, I always played on it, even in School (but only at the breaks). So one day, my math teacher gave me 3 games for my Game Boy, Sneaky Snakes, Donkey Kong Land and Super Mario Land. She told me it brought her back to so many memories, and she didn't need those games anymore anyways. Best math teacher ever. And when the Christmas came, I got two new games I always wanted for my Game Boy, Pokemon Red and Kirby's Dream Land 2. About half a month later, I went to London and bought 7 new games, Motocross Maniacs, Duck Tales 2, Mortal Combat II, Street Fighter 2, The Amazing Spiderman, Tetris 2 and Solar Striker, for only 40 pounds, which equals about 500 crowns. That's the history of my Game Boy.
+A Shimonek The NX will be the return of Cartridges (SD cards though this time). They are faster and can reduce costs for small games (if your game is only 8GB big then you only ship it in 8GB sd card. No reason to ship it in a 50GB blu ray disc, thus reducing costs and helps indie game companies ship their games physically. Plus SD cards currently have faster read times than blu ray discs
no bc if you look closely at the ps controller they do not have the same configuration as the nentendo d pad. the ps controller has lil arrow heads that point inward and the centers never touch. nintendo has an actual cross where all the directions touch. microsoft had lots of trouble finding a suitable d pad on their controllers... if you remember the 360 had a horrible d pad and that was a major flaw of the controller. this wasnt bc microsoft had bad designers but because Nintendo wouldnt license their tech over to microsoft. i am not exactly sure why the xbox one has a proper d pad now but they may have came to an agreement with nintendo or possibly tweaked the design ever so slightly so that it doesnt imfringe on nintendo's tech. also, if you remember, half way thru the life cycle of the 360 ms released a controller where the dpad did some kind of twisty motion which was sopposed to alleviate the problems with the original 360's dpad suckiness and did not infringe on nintendos tech. sooooo.... your answer in a nutshell... no they do not have to pay bc they all use slightly different configurations (unless, MS started payin nintendo for the rights on their new xbox one controllers) /rant
Kevin Clarke the xbox one dpad is just a complete copy from nintendo's modern dpad design, so maybe nintendo can sue microsoft and win... I'd love to see that.
gutts10 Actually I'm pretty sure the cross d-pad design is on the Xbox One controller now because the patent already ran out. There was a controller that did have the cross design: The Dreamcast controller, but that's because the internal part of the d-pad was designed differently than Nintendo's design.
Wait, you said that the Korean embargo relicenses of Nintendo were made by Samsung? I could have sworn it was Hyundai that released the "Comboy" series....?
I still call my handheld console a gameboy.. Its a habit I cant break. First I had 4 different game boys and then suddenly ''DS''? NOP! ITS A GAME BOY! Ill never stop calling my 3DS a game boy Q_Q
***** how I see it is that it's like calling your motorcycle a bike. Oh, and did you know that the DS wasn't called something with the word "gameboy" in it because they were afraid that it would bring more shame to the name? By the way, as a kid who grew up with a dad that does that kind of stuff all the time, keep it up! It really prepares them for what they will face in their everyday lives.
I bring my old GBA SP with me everywhere, and all the clueless kids around me say, "Hey a DS!" And I always explain that DS stands for dual screen and let them work that out.
We forgot one fact: after 25 years the Game Boy is still freaking awesome!

We have to thank Gunpei Yokoi for all the handhelds we have today.
Thank you Gunpei for an amazing handheld and changeing the industry! And, as always, thanks for the video!
"Lateral thinking of whithered technology"
That man is a friggin genius.
woah woah woah. The big N made a home console BEFORE the NES? this "color tv game system?"
Now I get that "color ev 15" reference in smash bros
Marnerbroman where was that?
Samrules888 It's an assist trophy summon. We mostly call it by the name "Pong".
There were multiple ones, basically games similar to what you would find on a Magnavox Odyssey (if you don't know what it is just Google). The most famous of these were Pong, also called Color TV-15
AVGN Did an episode on Pong Consoles he showed he owned two of them but could not play them as they don't work on American TVs.
OK, where the heck did that video of all the Miis worshipping a Virtual Boy come from, anyway? I'd love to see the full video!
Search "tomodachi life" :3
Really? I guess that game is even weirder than I thought, then...
@@EdKolis Late reply, but it's from a Tomodachi Life Direct video.
Did You Know?
I have a gameboy phone case
Super Mario Hamburger Cheeseburger Did you know?
I don't care that much
Super Pancake Bros. I used to have a giant Game Boy shaped case that I would store all my handheld gaming stuff in.
lol same, mine a s3 case
For anyone interested in the first song, it's Float Islands from Kirby's Dream Land. In case any of you were on the hunt like I was.
Aleksandr Serebrov,
Aleksandr Serebrov,
Went to space to play Tetris
Aleksandr Serbrov
Wait wait wait... A Game Boy, survived a EXPLOSION, during the Gulf War? And it still functions perfectly, just the cosmetics and such is just morphed?
...HOLY FUCKING CEREAL CRUMBS, THAT GAME BOY MUST HAVE BEEN AN OX IN DISGUISE!
I guess this just helps the thought about older consoles being more durable and less fragile to be true. "You could drop a TV on a N64 and it would be fine" a friend of mine says...
CALM DOWN
I know, and the 360 barely lives 3 years.
GAMEBOYS ARE SHIELDS!
yea so guys what the orgial artia is like
Nintendo has been known for making game machines with strong builds. Even the WIi U is a brick.
these videos are strangely addictive im a gaming enthusiast and collector so like the facts
Enthusiasts are bad as shit sir... Just like my shitty as classmate that drinks a gallon of energy drinks.
We have a device like that. We call it the GameDuck.
You again..
So... I've seen you around UA-cam for a while, and I've been wondering...
How does a duck use a keyboard?
JakeTheAwesome I think he 'pecks'! XD
And here we see a troll in its natural environment
He uses his feathers :P
Him: Has golden, diamond littered gameboy...
Me: Uses a brick with a vomit green screen...
These videos are my favorite things on UA-cam! Keep up the great work!
Nintendo has always lived 1 generation before their time. (Gameboy being behind sega technology and atari) yet. theyve always come on top. Wii U will be fine
Two words: virtual boy. Made by nintendo, sucked like crap.
Narwhal King true, but that was almost 20 years ago.
Narwhal King ye but then they made the wii and that shit printed money
Narwhal King
It wasn't that the virtual boy was bad. I own one and it was amazing at the time. Had they tested how the display when combined with the positioning of the head worked together prior to release, it may've been a success. Or if they had just released the head mounted version instead.
*****
Yes, the Virtual Boy was a poorly system, but it's really also a tragic one.
R.I.P Gunpei Yokoi
And Thank you.
Virtual Boy is still better than Tiger Electronics' device.
RIP Yokoi-San.
Game Boy was my life, and to some extent, still is.
Wherever you are up there, thank you sir, for making my childhood awesome.
I love hearing Jake explain stuff.
I had a Game Boy Camera when it came out. I got the Game Boy banned entirely at my school because I took a photo of a kid and stamped a big nose on him and then showed it to him at recess. He told the teacher on me :( That was a mistake.
M Bison but the funny thing is how bad the camera quality is, that it got banned cos of the time... 3DS would be a common thing now i imagine?
Hm, I wonder...
If they went with the "strap on goggle" design for the Virtual Boy and maybe added an option to turn the 3D off, maybe it wouldn't have been such a failure...
and if they would have left it in development til like a couple years from now, it would have been amazing.
It would have been a red Game Boy
Anddo
Nah, just because you can turn off 3D on the 3DS it isn't a DS.
Anddo
game boy had a 8bit 4.2 MHz processor and virtual boy had a 32bit 20MHz processor. Not the same architecture at all.
Virtual boy may be crap, but in what world a game boy would be able to move a game like Red Alarm?
Anyone else remember those creepy ass pictures from pressing run on the gameboy camera?
What are you running from?
Why do they exist?
I cried. . . . . .
A dude: lets mess the calculator
Now: *Switch*
I love how insane all of these 90's commercials are.
3:39 Nokia has met its match
A gameboy that was played in space? only sold for 1,200 dollars??
I have a Super Game Boy. It's pretty cool.
your picture is very disturbing
Sinclair Fruciano That's a strange way to spell seductive.
Best picture I've seen
ITS 2014 AND YOU STILL HAVE A SUPER GAME BOY?!?!
It works too. My sister's friend gave me a working copy of Pokemon Crystal and it plays just fine.
Mortal Kombat 1 was my most played game on Gameboy, ahhh the days of playing this in the backseat of my parents car on roadtrips😀
Being the first EVER video game console I EVER played, you just gotta love it....
Some of these facts I didn't even know!
1:50 , So THERE'S where Game&Watches final smash move came from....
DAH EPIK DUCK/OCTAPUS IZ COMMANG (this is from RŌBLOX)
Im liking this just because they used mario land music.
ALL HAIL THE VIRTUAL BOY!
0:32 In Soviet Russia, Game Boy enjoys playing you.
05:55 all hail virtual boy :D
He was killed in a car "accident"...
Lol
mmdexter1 It wasn't a joke.
***** cuz.
***** I apologize if I said something so bad that you want me to go to a fantasy world and burn for all eternity.
***** ?
What if the NX would be a Virtual Boy revival
+A Shimonek The NX will be the return of Cartridges (SD cards though this time). They are faster and can reduce costs for small games (if your game is only 8GB big then you only ship it in 8GB sd card. No reason to ship it in a 50GB blu ray disc, thus reducing costs and helps indie game companies ship their games physically. Plus SD cards currently have faster read times than blu ray discs
John Demetriou its still disks
+Carl Bloke disk drives are faster than compact disc though though.
MrFRNTIK true
Fuck you then! XD lol
the nostalgia from this video is making me cry
Snap! You're on Gameboy Caaaamera!!!
2:31 does that mean microsoft, sony and other 3rd party game controller makers have to pay nintendo to have a d-pad.
no bc if you look closely at the ps controller they do not have the same configuration as the nentendo d pad. the ps controller has lil arrow heads that point inward and the centers never touch. nintendo has an actual cross where all the directions touch. microsoft had lots of trouble finding a suitable d pad on their controllers... if you remember the 360 had a horrible d pad and that was a major flaw of the controller. this wasnt bc microsoft had bad designers but because Nintendo wouldnt license their tech over to microsoft. i am not exactly sure why the xbox one has a proper d pad now but they may have came to an agreement with nintendo or possibly tweaked the design ever so slightly so that it doesnt imfringe on nintendo's tech. also, if you remember, half way thru the life cycle of the 360 ms released a controller where the dpad did some kind of twisty motion which was sopposed to alleviate the problems with the original 360's dpad suckiness and did not infringe on nintendos tech. sooooo.... your answer in a nutshell... no they do not have to pay bc they all use slightly different configurations (unless, MS started payin nintendo for the rights on their new xbox one controllers)
/rant
gutts10 Oh. OK, thanks.
+Troll4ever31 ._.
Actually come to think of it...
YES IF THAT HAPPENS WE CAN HAVE RAREWARE AGAIN
THERE IS MY GAME BOY!
Take it out of the screen, QUICK!
'Face palms'
*jumps off cliff*
you forgot the "run" easter egg on the gameboy camera
**Shrug** Thats fuckin creepy
Whenever I hear about Gumpei Yokoi, it makes me sad. Such an awesome figure, he even created Metroid!
Very cool stuff. I never saw the link between Game & Watch and Earthworm Jim 2 until now.
Wait, you said that the Korean embargo relicenses of Nintendo were made by Samsung? I could have sworn it was Hyundai that released the "Comboy" series....?
You would be correct.
4:35 Such a nostalgic song, can't find where it's from though :(
Super Mario Land.
muda kingdom
I still call my handheld console a gameboy.. Its a habit I cant break.
First I had 4 different game boys and then suddenly ''DS''? NOP! ITS A GAME BOY!
Ill never stop calling my 3DS a game boy Q_Q
*****
Haha, I do that to my dad. He can't stop calling the DS a gameboy lol
I'm playing the Game Boy version of Tetris right now while I learn about our gaming heritage. I feel grateful to so many people right now.
I sunk countless hours into the original GameBoy. I knew a lot of these facts, but it was still fun to reminisce.
