It's been over 6 months since I got the Dometic CFX3 45L portable fridge/freezer! I honestly cant remember what camping was like before this upgrade - NO MORE ICE and NO MORE SOGGY FOOD =D #dometic
This video I give you my review and thoughts on the CFX3 after over half a year on the road with it, tons of camping trips and driving across the country with it!
Lots a pros and some cons in the list as well as explain some power issues I've had when powering it up with the Goal Zero Yeti 400.
Would I have done anything differently? Possible... if I want to spend more money to get dual zone (fridge AND freezer) capability and potentially go with a different battery pack since the Goal Zero AC plug seems to be the issue with my power setup.

nice review man! aside from the AC/DC confusion, super helpful.... 24hr run time is not enough though... need to get it to atleast 2-3 days for a good weekend trip with a good amount of buffer...

I’ve been using the Boulder 50 solar panel to help keep the battery topped off which has been working well with these sunny desert days

@@Kadenventures I'm have an ARB fridge freezer that runs off a dual battery system. I also have solar to keep the battery topped off. I like the ARB but if I was doing it again, I'd go with the Dometic just for the lower power consumption. I'm enjoying your channel. Good stuff !

DC to AC conversion uses transformers that actually create a lot of heat, which is why it’s much less efficient than going straight off the DC. Thanks for the review!

Not sure if someone already said it but when you unscrew the DC plug, the two prongs are for the Dometic power outlet. It connects to ur car battery and runs into the cabin for an additional DC Plug and fridge specific outlet

Thanks Kaden for this review. Always finding ways to make it easier to charge my Dometic on road trips. If I have a cfx3 75 what wattage inverter would you recommend?
For a CFX3 75 i'm not sure what wattage inverter you would need but I believe it depends on the power source you plan on running it from (ex. Goal Zero?) I actually found my exact setup online from a guy with the same fridge, Goal Zero yeti 400 in conjunction with a 300 watt inverter.

That would be a big hesitation of mine as well, some of those dual zone fridges can get big and this 45L is really the largest I would go with the current space I have to place it in my truck. I love car/truck camping! And would love to have a cab over setup so I can just jump in and not have to worry about the whole roof top tent setup! I'm sure you can do that easily in your Outback! I almost went with a dual zone to have the option of freezing, but glad I went with the 45 as its bigger than it looked online. I also liked the way way the lid opens at the end. I'm going to put it in the narrow side back seat in an F-150 and the fit is just right.

Hey great vid! I'm also new to the whole Goal Zero thing portable electric power thing. So if I heard you right, if you use the cigarette plug instead of the house plug it will be less draw on your Yeti? Thanks!
Hey Michael! Yes that's what I've been told, using the cigarette plug will draw less power over the house plug on the Goal Zero. Since making the switch I do see the battery lasting much longer in comparison when I was using the house plug. Thanks for watching!
The power issue could be related to the cigarette socket on Yeti 400 not matching the plug of CFX. I have seen it been discussed in forum - that using a GZ 8mm cable (dongle) to a cigarette socket will cure.

@@alexgonzo19 Definitely lots of options! Thats why I ended up getting the Dometic as well (bec of their sale LOL) It's rugged and has a low power draw but I've been hearing about other cheaper fridges that are performing the same (ex. Iceco)

I do have a solar panel for my Goal Zero, I bring it with us if I know we are going to be parked most of the day vs driving around - I just did a video on the solar panel recently and got a 15 ft extension for it so I can move it around based on where the sun is instead of permanently mounting it on the truck's roof (Boulder 50 for the Goal Zero Yeti 400) ua-cam.com/video/MuT5kQLDvdE/v-deo.html
It definitely helps a lot to keep the battery topped off for the fridge! I wish I would have gone with the solar panel thats a bit more packable, the Boulder 50 is pretty big and doesnt pack down well
One thing with your losing power, some of those plugs can be quite heavy, and hitting a bump can be enough to just break the connection. You might find if you can lay the power unit on its back so the plug is vertical it cures the problem. Check if there is a vent on the back first though, if there is it needs to allow air around it.

3:00 how does the Goal Zero 400 12v DC power the fridge? I cannot get it to run the compressor... only works using Goal Zero 120v AC outlet. Tested on original 400 (led acid battery) and 400 Lithium.
When I plug the Dometic into the Goal Zero using the 12v the fridge starts right away, did you check and make sure the 12v is getting power from that outlet? Maybe try plugging in something else to make sure power is running on that 12v port?
Your video is helping to decide to get this box for my boat. How much watts in solar would you recommend for continuous use?
I think it depends on how big the battery you plan on using with the fridge, I run a 50 watt panel now but I'd get a 100-200 watt solar panel. Specifically i've been looking at the Jackery 500 or 1000 bundles that come with solar panels to replace my Goal Zero

Don't know if you have figured this out, but I just discovered that the divider will set perfectly across the top to help keep food secured and help you not lose it somewhere!

Great video! I’m looking at this model right now too, curious though, do these run when not plugged into anything? I don’t have any power source, only my truck battery/cigarette lighter. So I’d basically plug it in the night before and get it down to temp, and then it would only be powering it when we’re driving. When I get to camp it won’t receive power, will it run at all for any duration of time? I guess the better question is, how well does it hold its temp, and do you think it could keep food cold and safe for about 12 hours?

Hey Christopher! So unfortunately this fridge does not have any type of power hold, it has to be constantly plugged in to remain cool. I did this a bit when I was ln Alaska and the temps didnt get too hot at night (itll stay cool for a little bit in cold temps but definitely not 12 hours straight safely especially if you have any sun exposure.) It does have a small power draw and there are different battery modes on the fridge that will to turn the fridge off automatically when its feels that the battery its running from gets too low (auto shut off) but I never trusted this to leave it plugged into the truck overnight. Not familiar with goal zero but I have a jackery 500 I bought several years ago that turns off if it senses that my fridge is drawing less than 2 watts. It is a power saving mode to help keep the jackery charge levels longer. Maybe the same thing applies to goal zero. Contact manufacturer to find out.

I'm sure you are aware now, but there is another option for portable batteries - Econflow River Pro is excellent and fully charges in less than 2 hours. But also, just to let you know, I have left my Dometic CFX plugged into my Jeep overnight many times and it has never drained the battery dead. The shut off on the fridge really works.

When the compressor starts up it can trip the Circuit breaker in the yeti 400 12 volt socket. Pushing the on off button resets it. The away around this is to use the Anderson port on the side of the yeti. Get a Anderson plug to 12v socket. plug the fridge into that and your problem is solved. You may have to buy a 12volt socket with eyelet ring terminals and cut the eyelets off and crimp on a Anderson plug onto it. I used a noco 12v socket. No more fridge turning off. The side Anderson ports aren’t Circuit protective.

Hey Mike! I’m honestly not sure how long I’ve never tried killing my truck battery with it plugged lol but if the truck runs a bit every day and keeps the battery topped off then I’d say It would keep the fridge powered on indefinitely, I’ve hooked my fridge up to my truck and the fridge will eventually say low voltage detected after 24 hours of the truck not running and it’s hot out ~80F
The 12vdc round receptacle turning off is related to load demand, if there isnt a measurable load on the receptacle it will turn off. After the compressor stops then doesnt run again for a while the receptacle turns off.

Hey! I was hoping to see in the video how many watts the fridge was using on the goal zero. By any chance do you know off the top of your head?
According to Dometic's website: Power Draw in Watts (cooling) = 50.7 W and Power Draw in Watts (steady) = 1.0 W
Dual zone= more difficulty to maintain temp => use more watts on your powerstation (will require bigger battery and more powerful solar panels), more noise, bigger and heavier. You have to take that in consideration, for simply few popsicles..if you really want it, you can set as freezer, to store ice cream, pizza, frozen food, and ice packs and use a soft cooler to store drinks and other items, cooled by the icepackd generated by thhe cfx3. How’s that?

Thanks for that I didnt even think about the requirements that would come with a bigger fridge just for some ice cream LOL That would be a good solution tho if I ever need to carry any frozen food, turn it to a freezer and then the soft cooler good idea! @@Kadenventures i just bought and received my cfx3 45 3 days ago, and i just plugged it today as ups déivery put my fridge not upright. It could have been damaged. So i waited 3 days without plugging it. Hopefully it works. I test it few days as fridge at 41F but i will probably test it as well as a freezer to make sure it works on this mode as well. However my powerstation (ordered it and will received it between may 7-17) is just the Jackery 1000 and i need it for few trips of 4 days straight camping so i will use it as fridge only for low consumption. Maybe next year if everything is good and we like camping, i plan to buy a bigger powerstation like jackery 2000, then it is possible we could use it as freezer with the soft cooler Woods we already have and is very good. We too would like some ice cream..lol. But the important point i wanted for my fridge is to be able to hold it with one person. The 75 would be impossible for me alone to transport. The 45 seems perfect.
@@Kadenventures i just read today in the documentation, cfx3 45 is 79kwh/year, and the cfx3 75dz is 111kwh/year. The consumption per day at 32C ambiant for the cfx3 45 is 296wh per day, the cfx3 75dz is 412wh per day. So it is significantly more as i said before. Our cfx3 45 is really the best choice i think. It is even more efficient than the cfx3 35 rated as 81kwh/year despite having less capacity with 36L. The cfx3 45 is the best.
i just bought the 25litre. it charges great with the AC power, but when i connect to dc, the temperature starts to get hotter. is there something wrong with my chord? I have tried plugging it into the car DC and my ecoflow battery
I've noticed that a little bit on mine when I go to DC, it doesnt stay at the temps I have the fridge set for (ex. Fridge is set for 39 but the fridge sits at 43). Do you notice it gets hotter or does it stay consistant at that higher temp?

I think most dual zone fridges are a bit bigger, I’ve seen some with a smaller freezer compartment tho I think by ARB? Which looks roughly the size of the cfx45
Just got mine from REI with my 20% coupon. Works fine but I too was unable to get it to work on DC with my Yeti 1000.
I checked the cable, plugs and all for continuity. I checked the cigarette socket for voltage. Everything was fine.
The problem is the button on Dometic's DC plug covering the fuse is too wide for my Yeti. When I looked inside the socket I saw a ceramic tab that sticks proud of the contact at the back. The wide button hits the ceramic. Removing this and letting the loose fuse contact the socket did the trick. It works reliably now but I will be replacing the Dometic plug with one that will fit my Yeti asap.

Hi Bashar, I use the Medium setting. You can also use the Low setting but I havent noticed any difference
That little piece is the fuse. If it overloads the fuze pops to protect the electrical system.
It should have a wire or thin piece of metal if the glass tube is black the fuze can be bad. Also that cap you took off the top should have a spring. Sometimes they wear out. I stretch them back out and that fixes the connection in the socket.

Hi J, I took a tape measure to it and it shows 21 inches from the top of the fridge to fully open. The fridge height is 19" inches so counting the full length of the fridge and for the door to fully open it would be about 40" inches in total. Hope that helps!

In case someone is wondering, the CFX3 45 fits perfectly front to back in the middle of the rear seat area of a RAM Crew Cab with the 60 side of the seat folded up and the floor platform fold out. There is just enough clearance to open the lid all the way.

Will this setup run indefinitely 24/7? How much do you have to drive to keep it going?
Depending on the temps (if its hotter the battery is going to die out much faster). On this setup I think after about a 3/4 hour drive the battery was already at 100% again. I've upgraded my battery since this video and i'm now on a 1000watt battery which will easy last a few days on the battery alone in cool weather (60s) without driving to recharge the battery
The Dometic PLB40 is the perfect battery to run the fridge 👍

The reason why your fridge is cutting out early is because your now using the unregulated DC port and the power protection is kicking in on the fridge. Make sure this is turned off and you should be fine :)

Thank you for that comment. I actually have the same problem. I have the cfx3 100 and running it with the goal zero 3000x. I had it with the 12v cable but noticed it was turning off. But now that I rad your commitment makes total sense. I know domestic has this feature to safe your battery from draining completely down, but completely forgot about that feature. Thanks

I hate how this fridge does not have hinges that keep the lid open inside my car because it does not fully open has anyone drilled into the fridge or found an alternative way .
Yeah agreed, its pain to have to hold it open, I havent heard of anyone drilling into the fridge but i'm sure that'll kill the warranty on it if its a newer unit lol Thanks for watching Luke!

I found that temps make a huge difference in the battery lasting, as long as you arent in super hot temps it will definitely last at least 24 hours on the Yeti

No the fridge handles cannot be removed

How much battery % is left after one night at camp?
Depends on the weather at night, if its been hot all night i've seen the battery dead in the morning but if its colder out there would be at least 50% if not more left on the battery

What is the reason for the inverter? Can't you just charge the battery pack on DC from the car and skip the inverter?
Hey Alexander, Unfortunately the Goal Zero doesnt have a cable to charge it directly to the car (it may be a separate cord I could buy though)? May have to look into that since my inverted died on me about 2 weeks ago so I've been plugging the fridge directly to the car to keep cold while we drive

A bit tempted to get one of those myself, don't have a dometic, just a simple 12 cooling box without a compressor. Funny enough it uses more power than the dometic 🤣

I don't blame you for going with a more simplistic setup, these Dometics aren't cheap!
I have the smaller cfx28 . I have the cfx to shut down on 12v connected from car on normal use randomly. I don't think it is the connection that is wrong. When I use the emergency switch (maybe you have that to) then it runs nonstop. But it doesn't care about what temp I set it for then it just cools as much as it can.
That is odd! Have you tried playing with the battery reserve settings (Low, M, High)? I'm not sure if I have an Emergency switch.. not sure where that is on the Dometic?

Looks like you have the wrong cable for running the fridge. I have the Goal Zero 400 Lithium and the Dometic CFX35 and it runs my fridge for 48 hours straight and even longer when I'm connecting back to the jeep.
Good to know! My Goal Zero isnt the Lithium version unfortunately, what cord are you using to connect the fridge to the Goal Zero?

I’m not understanding why you have an inverter also if you want a fridge freezer they’re gonna be a lot bigger it takes a lot more energy to keep that freezer frozen I live on the road full-time so I torture test at all this stuff have a blessed day
I have an inverter to charge the Goal Zero via AC while i'm driving since the Goal zero did not have a DC plug for the car. Since this video I have bought a DC plug for the goal zero to charge while I drive so I actually know longer use the Inverter. Thanks!

DC - usually supplied from your vehicle
AC - usually supplied from your home

Look it say's 12v/24v DC on the plug that should be AC. Thats why it keeps turning off.

I was close to switching actually! I got an warning message on the goal zero a few weeks of Complete Battery Failure, reached out to Goal Zero and they luckily sent me a new one. If they didnt i'd definitely be switching though since this battery was only a year old!

400 watt agm battery not a good battery to use on cf3 mostly if you using solar panel to charge the goal zero

Its not too loud, sometimes you can hear it when the fan kicks on for a few minutes but then it goes silent again

You actually don't need to keep your eggs in the fridge if they are uncooked. They age the same outside.

Mate The Car Sockets are DC not AC, And while you are driving you should plug the fridge direct in to the cars 12v DC Socket and save the Goal Zero for when you are stopped, Using the Inverter to the Goal Zero and then to the Fridge is wasting so much power, You need to work on this and save your self the trouble, Good Luck.

I think the most convenient part of how I have it setup now is I dont have to worry about switching the connections when i'm stopped for camp (I know how I am and i'll most likely forget to plug it back in lol) but I'll definitely take that into consideration for the power saving benefits. @@Kadenventures it’s an ice pack that keeps items frozen. Put a steak on bottom with the ice pack on top to keep it frozen in the fridge.

To be honest. The last thing I would have bought was any of the goal zero gear. Just overpriced and underperforming in todays fast moving solar / 12v solar world.
You can buy a basic battery box for next to nothing and throw a lithium battery in it. Add a reasonable solar panel and voilà !!
The cut out may be that the 12v socket on the Goal Zero is not regulated ?

And yes i've been having some Goal Zero issues.. not sure if i'd ever buy them again but my Goal Zero battery did die on me (got a battery failure warning error) luckily Goal Zero honored their warranty and sent me a new one. This new unit has been working but I've noticed its been dying pretty fast... still doing some tests but I may branch out to other battery brands in the future. Thanks!!

wouldn't touch this cooler with a 10 foot pole. google dometic cfx3 recall (Part 573) - the control system is broken, dometic knows, and there's no fix.

It's only 'broken' if you run it on AC and DC together as it has backfeeding issues. If you just run it on DC, there's no issue?
@@JamesLewis144 I don't run it using both DC and AC together, its usually one or the other. When i'm at home, the fridge runs directly on DC (plugged into outlet in the garage) and i've had no issues with that

Your new to this, you’ve made a lot of mistakes. You should have watched a lot of YT videos first. Wrong size battery, should have been lithium, wrong cable set up.
