Longest TUNNEL in North America Leads to Where?
Вставка
- Опубліковано 6 лют 2025
- Anton Anderson is a 2.5 mile long tunnel and is the Longest highway tunnel in North American connecting Portage to Whittier Alaska. It was built in the early 1940 and was originally used for Military Purposes, but as time went on and travel to Whittier Increased, the tunnel was eventually converted to dual use, so that both everyday vehicles and trains could use the tunnel.
Once we get into Whittier Ill tell you about the history of the Buckner building and the Begich towers condominiums. Whitter is often referred to as "the town where everyone lives under one roof".....Enjoy!

Do you work on CAT engines? You sound an awful lot like Adept Ape.
EDIT: I reviewed other videos on this channel and found one that showed your face. You're not him, but he's DEFINITELY your "voice twin".
@@Stacy_Smith lol, I'll have to check that out
That is why we always ride the train from Anchorage to Whittier whenever we are doing another Alaskan Cruise. The train ride is spectacular
I will have to do that next time!
This is a very interesting tunnel with the train tracks and all! I rode my Harley through the tunnel in 2012. The lady said to be careful as the air vents can cause a motorcycle to crash. I smiled and the lady scolded me, I said " have you ever been on the windy interstates in South Dakota and Wyoming?" The winds have pushed me on a bike instantly to another lane. I had no problem with the vented wind, but did not like the tracks. A bike has to ride between the tracks because it is too narrow on both sides. That ride started in Richmond, VA.
haha....thanks for sharing!
Howard what time of the year were on your Harley drive Thur?
@@larrypetersen2206 It was near the end of July. I timed my trip to AK so that I'd get back down to Sturgis which is always the first of August. I had wet gear as well as heated jacket and gloves. They helped quite a bit! I highly recommend that trip, just always know where the next gas stop is located. It was a 5 week trip.
@@Howard-bj1jq For you, Howard and others. I believe that many/most(?) railroads in America share similar gauges, and those happened to have matched the tracking width of the '88 Ford Escort. This same gauge was lain down most of Market Street in San Francisco, for the Streetcars. I simply nudged my tires onto the tracks, and let go of my steering wheel, the tracks held me nicely in place. Of course, when a Streetcar wanted use of its tracks, I simply nudged out, and nudged back in, once the Streetcar had passed!
@@swithinbarclay4797 Can't do that with a motorcycle!
Lifelong, homestead raised Alaskan and I really enjoyed this. When I was a teenager in the 60s it was great fun to go to Whittier and explore. Thanks for some memories.
hey your welcome! appreciate you checking out the video!
I've driven that road many times, I lived in Anchorage from 1984-2006. I had friends who were charter boat captains and hosted out of Whittier. My favorite part of this area is Esha my bay, a tiny little place to anchor and go ashore at a little creek. It's just gorgeous! I'm in Texas now and miss the fresh salmon. When I first started going to Whittier you had to take the train, it was before they put the road in. Lots of changes in those short years.
Thank you for sharing!
Whittier is a town where the majority of the residents live, go shopping, go to work and school, etc all in the same building.
It's not that extreme dude 😂. There are plenty of other houses n stuff. Yes, there's the one building with a school and a store, but it's a fishing town.
Who else walked through this tunnel when there was just a railroad line running through it? A friend and I flagged the train from Anchorage around Turnagain and rode into Whittier just to see the recently cordoned off Bucknber Building. After a day or so and a day before the next train was due, we decided to just hoof it back through the tunnel before it even had a name (at least we had never heard of Anton Anderson). After about a mile, my friend and I head a distant rumbling and then saw a light coming right at us! We had no choice but to jump off the berm and stand up to our waists in frigid pools of water while we watched a handcar that we thought only existed in old cartoons and movies go right past us. I looked up and could almost have grabbed the guys ankles, but we finally made it out and then spent three hours watching about two dozen Alaskan Brown Bears hit a salmon run in the Portage River before hiking through the smaller tunnel and then back to the Seward Highway. This story goes on for hours so I'll leave it at that except to say it all happened back in the summer of 1970 when I was 16.
thank you for sharing!!
Up to your waists , then no hyperthermia? B.S. I have been there.
@@oneskydog6768 Yeah, up to my waist which would be over your head!
Maybe for three minutes! The BS you allude to must be that Bachelor of Stupidity you earned from Trump U.!
@@oneskydog6768 I see that my first, rather acerbic, comment has been removed, no doubt due to its "political" allusion, so let me take another tack, how 'bout: You're all wet dude! I was standing there for perhaps two minutes watching the handcar go by and the water was up to my waist, which would be over your head in more ways than one. How's that?
Drone photography - definitely in the top five list of favorite tech gifts to humanity. Thanks.
I would agree! it allows our eyes to see from perspectives we wouldnt normally be able to...thank you for checking out the video!
I visited Whittier several times while I was living in Alaska. I enjoyed stopping at the wildlife conservation center, then going to the Portage Glacier lookout, popping through the tunnel for Ice Cream and sights, heading back through and on to Girdwood for dinner at the Double Musky Inn, then back home to Anchorage. Did this aboot twice a year for the 5 years I lived in Anchorage, and once when I was living in Fairbanks.
Thank you for sharing your story 🙏
Head Engineer: "Okay Governor, it's time to dedicate the new tunnel opening up."
Governor: "Wait, where's the second tube? Did you guys unfold the blueprint all the way?"
Head Engineer: "Dammit ..."
Very well done and interesting video. Thanks for posting it !
hey no problem! Appreciate you checking out the video! 👍
Great video. I really liked the ermine. I got to see a black mink in the wild once. He acted the same way, very curious and very skittish too.
arent they just the most interesting little critters. It was fun to watch him zoom back and forth.....Thanks for tuning into the video!
My cousin kept his boat in Whittier and I used to drive from Anchorage to the train in his truck. The train ride was always a lot of fun.
awesome!!!
Thanks, Jessie for another outstanding video! We appreciate all your hard work 😊
Hey no problemo!! appreciate you taking the time to check out the video!!! thank you 🙏
I have a bit of drone footage from Whittier as well up. You are so correct about the views that are here in the state, it is amazing!
Heck yea!! views are so intoxicating! I cant wait to go back!
My family and I did a day trip, at the end of a week long Alaska trip, out Wittier back in the early 2000’s. I have to admit it was the highlight of our trip, highly recommend it!🤠😎
Ahhhh, Whittier!!!
We went on an inside passage cruise from there to Vancouver in 2022. We flew into Anchorage, spent a few days and then took the train down through the Anderson tunnel. At Whittier our ship was standing there. Being 2022 the last step before boarding was a Covid-19 test. People that failed it weren't allowed to board.
We made it aboard just fine, along with most people. Some didn't make it and had to turn back. We met a family that had been split up!
(Those days are pretty hard to be nostalgic about.)
Thank you for sharing!
Thank you Jessie, that was both wonderful and very beautiful. Thank you for sharing 🖖🇬🇧
Glad you enjoyed it!
I went to Whittier ALASKA this past June. Wonderful experience. Great food and great people.
heck yea! whittier is awesome!
It might be the longest highway tunnel. CPKC Railway has the 9 mile MtMcdonald tunnel in Alberta, Canada. BNSF railway has the 7.9 mile Cascade Tunnel under Steven's Pass in Washington state and 7 mile Flathead Tunnel in Montana, all railroad tunnels in North America.
I have been in both the Alaska and Cascade tunnels. I have never understood why people in Alaska claim this to be the longest. The ride through the cascade tunnel on a train took nearly 35 minutes, for us a little longer because the engine broke down in the last few miles and plunged us into darkness for a moment. Luckily we were going down hill so we coasted the last mile or so and had to wait on the side track for another engine to tow us.
wanna see long railroad tunnels with super-fast, frequent train service? Go to Switzerland. The longest RR tunnel lies there.
@PORSCHE_COUNTRY. So how fast were you going in your Porsche 😉😄
I recently drove through the longest road tunnel in the world ! The amazing
Laerdal tunnel in Norway. 15.2 m8les long ! It even has car parks along the way in case drivers heed a break!,
It's the longest combination highway-train tunnel.
Went through Aug 2024 on train from Anchorage and boarding HAL Nieuw Amsterdam for cruise. Very interesting and beautiful train ride. Thanks for sharing

thank you, thank you thank you!!! I like to mix it up every once in a while and go some place completely different. and yes, alaska is gorgeous and there's so much more of it to see. thank you once again for taking the time to check out the video! 🙏
This was one of Hobo Shoestrings stomping ground, Mark returned to Alaska nearly every year, and he had a YT channel showcasing all his train hopping exploits from Alaska and the lower 48 states. If there was a railroad track laid across the Pacific Ocean from California to Hawaii, he would not have batted an eye, he'd hop that train to Hawaii in a heart beat. Seeing this video, brought me back memories of "ShoeStrings" the wondering freedom loving Hobo (see his YT content if interested). He was younger than me, but we crossed paths when he went through basic training in Ft. Dix, New Jersey when he was a young lad (I was TDY'd drill corporal at the time). RIP Mark! I lived in Whittier for several months in the 1970s. Everyone in town does livecin the same building. Also the small single engine airplane is the Alaskan pick-up truck.

Actually, Alaska is not all that "isolated"--some vast sections--for regular vehicular travel. They do have a comprehensive ferry network run by the State Transportation Department. The Southeastern terminus may be in Prince Rupert, B.C., and the farthest Western one may be Dutch Harbour in the Aleutians, not all that far from Mother Russia. The trips through their coastal waters are so long, that you drive your vehicle aboard, and take a stateroom, so that you have a highly generic form of the seacruises of the frilly luxury set.
😂 more isolated than any other state and many many places on earth. "Vast sections for vehicular travel " 😂 yeah only on a few roads with hardly anything between. And a ferry is the epitome of isolated.
From Wikipedia: The Flathead Tunnel is a 7-mile-long (11 km) railroad tunnel in the Rocky Mountains of northwest Montana near Trego, approximately 28 miles (45 km) west of Whitefish. Located on the BNSF Railway's Kootenai River Subdivision, it is the second-longest railroad tunnel in the United States after the Cascade Tunnel.

My parents lived in Whittier for a few years. I was in Anchorage at the time. Drove through that tunnel often.

Great video and great shots of the ermine, really cute. Been to Whittier twice (2006 after my oldest daughter moved to Anchorage, and 2009 when my youngest daughter graduated from high school). Real pretty scenery.
Thank you! the ermine was pretty adorable, fast little thing haha! thanks for checking out the video!
I'm glad I discovered your channel. Great storytelling.
Oh!!! thank you so much IdahoQuadcopter!!! glad you like the video and I also just subbed to your channel! always interested in checking out other channels that are passionate about drones just like myself 👍
I'm gonna live in Alaska one day. I've already lived in Northwest Washington State and it only increased my desire to go further north to the last true frontier.
Awesome!!!
Went through the tunnel with a local guide. He said that a large bear had used the abandoned building as a home. Also, there is a tunnel that connects the condo building to the school so the kids don't have to go outside in the winter to get to school.
I've heard that story about the bear too!
I went from Whittier to Seward then Anchorage. Everything on that roadcwas breathtaking. Even in the waiting area Whittier end for the tunnel was amazing. Glaciers on both sides of the road. Then a short drive after the tinnel just past a bend you see the lake with more glaciers and mountains. This is Alaska that we come there for!
heck yea!!! the glaciers are amazing!!
Thanks. That brings back memories as I lived in Alaska off and on from 1968 to 1987 and went to Whittier a number of times on fishing trips and such. You probably missed an opportunity by not catching the arrival of a train-ship and seeing how they connect the floating cars to the dock track and transfer them. Then again I don't know how often they're doing such operations any more. BTW your Mini 4 Pro did a good job tracking your car. I've got one too but have not had the opportunity to try "high speed" tracking. Need to get around to that some day.
enjoyed this reading! Might be able to catch that train ship in april when i go back! and yea, that mini 4 pro is something else. packs little punch for such a small drone, although I did speed up the video a little bit when I did the active track, if there werent any trees around it would have done an even better job keeping up....thanks again for checking out the video!
Such a unique location! Amazing!
It is, I love this place!
Wonderful memories are flooding back from my trip here a few years ago. Thank you!
hey no problem!! its a wonderful place!
Anxiety level 100% going through the tunnel, but, wow, Whittier is beautiful!!!
yes! whittier is amazing!
Great vid, thank you. BTW close call with drone @ 16:13 with the telephone wire, whew :)
Your very welcome! Appreciate you checking out the video! And yes!!! Talk about a close call! I never noticed the telephone wire until I got back home, uploaded the footage and started piecing it together....boy did get lucky! Thanks again for checking out the video! 🙏
Awesome video. I've never seen a tunnel like that. Other Alaskan video was cool, too.
hey thank you!
Been there this summer (2024) as last part of a cruise from Vancouver to Anchorage. I felt the tunnel part was really exciting having learned of its history on the bus. It definately adds to the mystery of visiting Alaska for the first time, especially coming from Europe…
Hello Europe!!! thanks for checking out the video!
Great video. Thanks for posting this.
Hey no problemo! glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you.

I went through this tunnel on the way to Cordova when I was six and it blew my mind.
awesome!
Great video thank you for not adding music while you were talking
As soon as I seen the thumbnail with the entrance to the tunnel, I know it was Whittier! Ironically or unironically images of this building 8:04 popped into my head! An all in one city in a building basically! Post office, offices, apartments, underground network, going hundreds of storage deep for a genetic bio research lab conducting experiments effectively creating zombies!
Seriously though I love geography, history. If your channel is more like this video? I'm subscribing!
hey thank you! I'm gad you enjoyed the video!
As a Norwegian, watching this video almost made me feel like home :)
Granted, North America does not have that many long road tunnels as we do here, but it is cool to see a dual-purpose tunnel like that, which is something we don't have here, believe it or not.
Now, 2.5 miles (4 kilometers) is not that long, when you compare it to the longer ones we have in Norway, with the longest here being the Lærdal tunnel at 24.5 kilometers (15.2 miles), or the new Rogfast undersea tunnel at 26.7 kilometers (16.6 miles), when it finishes construction somewhere around 2033
oh hey thanks for sharing!
Beautiful! We were not on that highway but we have been to Alaska... Fairbanks, Denali, Anchorage, and everything in between plus we did a 7-day cruise up there. Gorgeous! Would love to go back. Oh, did you run across the mosquitoes? Huge and evil! Lol
haha i didnt run into them on this trip...but maybe next time! I hope to make it up to Fairbanks maybe in the spring, theres some abandoned buildings up in that area that I want to check out and possibly make a video on! Thank you for checking out the video!
i love that place. i was there twice. beautiful.
Nice!
Longest tunnel means it has one amazing looking small town and making new friends ^^ liking history lesson too.
Nice finding mate, We had a longest tunnel in UK/Ireland but haven't being there.

I love to travel Whittier there are some waterfalls up on the mountains that I love looking at. You need to take a cruise sometime and also down in Seward you won’t be disappointed. Portage Glacier is also a nice stop before you get to the Whittier tunnel.
waterfalls!! yes, Im hoping to go back again in the spring time and capture some video of them!! We went through that tunnel on the train 37 years ago on our homeymoon!
how awesome!
Wow, I went through that tunnel in July 2000, I didn't realize it had just opened (at least I don't recall that)...
Very cool video. Thanks for sharing. Oh and the drone came really close to the overhead wires at 16:12 lol.
Thank you! and yes! it sure did....that was a close call
I walked right up to that building in about 2006...No fence, walked up and looked right into the window opening. It basically had a small stream running through it.
awesome!
I’ve went through this tunnel about 25 years ago. It was quite an experience.
Right on! Thanks for sharing!
I was born and raised in Alaska, and I've been to whittier only three times in my life. It's a lovely town, but it's still part of my beautiful home state even though I don't know it as well as others.
awesome! I love alaska and find myself keep going back.....next visit...April!
@ I love Alaska, I justify don’t miss the annual snowfall amounts, but it’s the most beautiful state in the country, I deeply miss all the wild raspberries and blueberries, I also miss watching the moose because as babies they’re so clumsy but even when grown up they are truly a sight.
@ there is so much I miss of Alaska but I don’t have the time of day to list it all
I passed through this tunnel in September of 2004.
👍
I’d love to live in Alaska, those towns look so cute!!!
right!
Have you ever heard of the show, Railroad Alaska? I remember that tunnel being mentioned as essential for trade in and out of the state due to Whittier being a port town. There was actually an episode where they had to replace a long stretch of rail in the tunnel, which was hard to do thanks to the concrete between the rails, and the rails themselves being really long because they didn't really think of replacements, and cold on arrival to the tunnel and having shrunk due to that.
I havent! but ill check it out! love watching videos on alaska, i dont even care what its about....love everything about alaska!
Awesome tour! I was led here due to the circles of drone buddies on the YT platform. Your video was in the suggestions. The narration is well done, and the information and footage kept my interest. Perhaps they should paint murals on the Buckner building if it left unused. Cost effective means of blending it into the scenery.👍
oh awesome! and yes! I agree with you! paint murals on the building could even attract more tourists. in fact, they did that on an abandoned motel here in arizona, and a lot of people stop there to take pictures!.....appreciate you checking out the video!
Whittier is definitely a cool, scenic, and unique place. But the longest tunnel in North America is not Anderson/Whittier's 2.4-ish miles. It is 9.1-ish mile Mount Macdonald tunnel. Whittier is the longest roadway tunnel in North America, but many North American railroad tunnels are more than 2.4 miles. The longest roadway tunnel in the world is in Norway, over 15 miles.
It's worth noting that, during WW II, the Seward repair docks wound up building some boats for the USN. The Buckner Building used to be kindna nice.
I love all the drone shots, and what a way to capture all that!
16:13 was a bit close to the wire, and sped up video gave me a startle, glad you missed it
YES!!! i didnt notice that wire until after I got back and started reviewing the footage.....that was way to close! and I dont think my obstacle avoidance sensors picked it up, because if they did, it would have slowed way down
@@jessiesdroneadventures7464 Does the drone have an automatic follow mode or were you flying manually from the passenger seat? So close!
@Trainboy1EJR it has an automatic follow mode, and you can adjust the height, and distance 👍
I drove over to Whittier in 2006. The abandoned building was spooky. I drove behind the building and there were some people back there that were probably up to no good. They moved towards my vehicle as I pulled up and I quickly left. It scared me enough to just head back to Anchorage.
thank you for sharing!
If I had the money, I’d renovate it and turn it into an apartment complex. But I would also keep the remaining facilities as a reminder of what it once was for too.
Yes!!! it has too much historical value to just be sitting there and decaying
The Anton Anderson Tunnel isn’t just a piece of infrastructure; it’s a symbol of ingenuity, adaptability, and Alaska’s rugged charm. Whether you're traveling by train or car, it offers a one-of-a-kind journey through history and engineering.
Hi Jesse this is Clinton from Winnipeg Manitoba Canada I like your videos

I'm from Louisiana and my grandfather knew Hale Boggs. Boggs was a very powerful US Representative and many stories floated around that the plane going missing was planned.
The more I look into that story the more I want to do a video on that itself! Thank you for sharing
@jessiesdroneadventures7464 - I spent 5 years in Alaska 1970 to 1975. Never made it to Whittier. It was a bit further than I wanted to travel being stationed at Eielson AFB (26 miles SE of Fairbanks). As for that earthquake you mentioned: It was on Good Friday in 1964 and was the strongest ever recorded in North America - a 9.2. I think I read the second strongest ever recorded anywhere in the world. I was also there when the plane carrying Nick Begich disappeared. If I remember correctly they never found it because the story was that they most likely flew into the side of one of the mountains as the weather got worse as they flew southeast-ward and caused an avalanche which resulted in the airplane being buried in a lot of snow. Again, IIRC they even had the SR-71 with it's high tech radar scanning. Such a sad incident. BTW, loved your video. Job well done!
Hey thank you so much! enjoyed reading story! I think in the future Im going to do a video on that plane carrying Nick and the rest of the crew, its a story that pulls me in. Next trip to alaska is in april.....love it there! again thank you for sharing and I appreciate you checking out the video! 👍
That was an awesome veiws of a place I will unfortunately never get too visit.
Glad you enjoyed the video 👍at least you could visit the place virtually!
Awesome ❤❤❤
Isn't it! I didnt want to leave!
As a Cambodian I can tell you they were speaking in complimentary tones and words. First phrase is saying it's cold "trachak" but not horribly cold and "saat" he said three times was "Beautiful, Beautiful, Beautiful". He was then mentioning the the mountain (maybe, hard to say) and saying there's only one old hotel but it was worth coming to see.
I was wondering why this seemed so familiar and then remembered watching a food youtube video of a cafe in Whittier that seemingly serves a REALLY kick butt fried fish.
Hey I appreciate you sharing that! Love whittier!
Back in the Eighties you had to load your vehicle including its contents on a car-train. It was very romantic. There are still two major car-train routes in Switzerland.
That's on my bucket list.
Awesome!! Hope you can make it out there one of these days!
I guess since a railroad goes through the tunnel, it’s technically the longest railroad crossing in North America too
6:24 That’s the hotel we stayed at on July 29, 2013!
nice!
Hi just stumbled on this video what a beautiful place could you do more on the railroad please
in the future....High possibility! going back there in late april!
That looks like a tunnel I went through in British Columbia recently this year on the Trans Canada 🇨🇦 there!
Took the ferry to Whittier, once. Was with my wife and kid on a sidecar. Made us wait until all the cars went, then, an hour later in the rain, one guy in a truck came in from the other direction, then we got to go. Needless to say, hell will freeze over before I will ever do that again, Seward and Valdez and both much, much nicer and there really is no reason to go to Whittier, except that tunnel.
Thank you for sharing!
All that empty space, and everyone lives in one building.
“Seward” - what an unfortunate name for a town. Also, Whittier looks absolutely ghastly.
haha, ive thought that too
I had ferrets growing up & so did my youngest 2. I’ve never seen anything like the little white guy! I’d be sitting on the rock still trying to lure it with food just to be able to interact with it. I wonder if you can get one as a pet? It was so stinkin cute!
For the record, when I was your age, follow-me videos would involve Bell helicopters (think M.A.S.H) and volcanoes (yep, plural) of ca$h. Yours are so professional , it's good to know your technical ancestors. Next , thanks for always including details in this and all your videos. And lastly, when this video ended it was like being suddenly awakened in the midst of a beautiful dream. ACK ! Give a guy a warning farewell, will ya! 😅😅
haha, I know what you mean....its crazy to think back in the day, in order to get aerial shots like this you either had to use a helicopter or something along the lines of a single engine plan. Now days, it can all be done without having to physically leave the ground...times certainly have changed. Thanks for checking out the video!!
I live in similar circumstances in a 7 storey senior-only housing complex under subsidized housing.
Is it warmer than alaska?
It would be so cool to drive fast through this tunnel! Imagine the sound!
Imagine driving in the tunnel and there’s a train coming at you because somebody fouled up on the schedule!
that would be awesome!
oh god!
Northern Washington train tunnel is 7.8 miles long. Steven's pass. Been thru it.
