Bret Hart, in his autobiography, said that Kerry told him that he wanted to join his late brothers (David, Chris, and Mike had already died by this point--they had another brother, Jack, who had died when he was a kid) and Bret urged him to think of his own children. He said that Kerry let him think that he'd changed his minds, but he hadn't--Bret said that when he and Owen (Bret's own brother--who would tragically die in 1999) got the news, neither of them were shocked...

Shows the dangers of magical thinking. People think it's harmless to believe in things like god and heaven and all that, but there's absolutely no evidence for either, and look at what ppl can be motivate to do by believing in them. If you think you're one painless moment away from going to a magical place, you might be tempted to do something terrible. Kerry wasted his remaining life and didn't actually "join his brothers." Instead he abandoned his remaining family. People need to embrace sound epistemology, good standards of evidence, and should not believe things without good evidence. Magical thinking is dangerous

I used to have 5 brothers...Now I'm not even a Brother - Kevin Von Erich
And when he said he was glad when Fritz died...
Whether you believe in the curse stuff is irrelevant, that is so heartbreaking...
We've all suffered loss, we've all had to grieve at point or other, but what that man has gone through is a tale of ultimate survival

Kerry Von Erich was an outstanding pro wrestler, and he came into the WWE at the "right time" in mid-1990. He had a natural charisma, and WWE fans took to him as rapidly as his WCCW fans had. His most memorable WWE feud was with Mr. Perfect, Curt Hennig. Von Erich and Hennig were each second generation wrestlers who were close in age, size, and athleticism. They had many great matches together.

There was a story I heard some years back from Ric Flair. Ric was set to defend the NWA World Title against Kerry in Texas, it was supposed to be a rough and bloody match and Kerry had a little razor sliver in the tape on one of his fingers (a practice called Blading) which he would run across his or Rics forehead when the time was right, making just enough blood to make it look ugly. Anyway, Ric and Kerry got into the ring and stood in the center getting the instructions from the referee when Kerry began absentmindedly scratching an itch on his arm, Ric saw this and then saw a trickle of blood, Kerry was scratching himself with his bladed finger but was so stoned he didn't even feel it. Ric and ref, who also saw it, looked at each other and mouthed "Oh shit!" and had no choice but to pull an audible. Ref rang the bell to start the match and Flair went into shoot mode, grabbing Kerry and quickly rolling him up while the ref did one of the fastest three-counts in history, after which they got Kerry the hell out of there while the fans were still going "What happened?". The fans were outraged of course but everyone got to the back safe with nobody at ringside knowing what was really going on.

As a fan of pro wrestling in the 1980's in Canada, I didn't get to see a whole lot of Von Erich matches but always read about them in the pro-wrestling magazines and the odd wrestling tape that I traded with friends. I've watched quite a few documentaries and watched matches I can find now on UA-cam but this show was on a different level. Kevin seems completely at peace and has an almost zen like quality when he's dealt with so much tragedy that would have shattered so many other people. Well done Viceland!

World Class Wrestling could only be viewed by satellite TV during the 80’s. It has some of the greatest names in all of Pro Wrestling. Many fans dint realize but way before many of these wrestlers headed to the WWE in the late 80’s they were already big stars within the industry . Vince McMahon did a great job of hiding the history and accolades of these wrestlers.

This was the best episode, so far. Truly devastating. It’s like the whole family went through a war...and nobody came back home. I felt like there wasn’t enough emotional support with the brothers, too much pressure for wrestling and pride for the family legacy.
I didn’t understand why Kevin didn’t take Chris seriously when he said he was going to commit suicide, he knew about the suicide of the other brother. Also how the father was ignorant of the actions of Kerry hugging and telling him he loved him, before he ran out of the house. It really doesn’t make sense, I’m conflicted on what was truly going on with the family relationship. It really made me frustrated on the clear indications on how they told them they were going to kill themselves, then they did nothing to stop them...

I wonder how the numbers are doing for this series? I've been loving it. Already curious about a possible season 2, if possible. There's alot of wild pro wrestling stories that'd make for great episodes.. pillman, Owen, ect. Is there a site that posts the ratings for shows?

0:06 I have a really big boy. He’s never been interested in sports and he’s a gentle giant. His grandparents have tried to push him into football and other things because of his size. He doesn’t want to and we have never made him be anything other than who he is. He plays trombone and is beloved at school and is just a happy guy. But he’s absolutely right about that pressure.

I only knew Kerry from his WWF run, as I was both too young and not in the right geographic region to see World Class. I did get some exposure to Kevin and Chris from seeing USWA stuff on ESPN, but it was minimal. But I also got to meet Kerry at an autograph signing he did at a local venue in mid 1992, probably less than a year before he died. The way I found out he died was by me and my dad being in a book store, looking at the magazine rack, and seeing one of the wrestling mags have Kerry and Andre the Giant on the cover as an In Memoriam. We were shocked, and when we opened the magazine to read he'd committed suicide, it really hurt. It still does in some ways.

Definitely. Kerry Von Erich had one of the best personalities of anyone in the history of the business. Few of the fans knew how much pain Kerry was struggling with at the time he died. Early 1993 was tough for me as a pro wrestling fan. Andre the Giant, Dino Bravo, and Kerry Von Erich each died fairly young in early 1993.

Meltzer was a bit inaccurate. They DID refer to Kerry by his name in WWF,I knew that as a kid. Howard Finkle says his name when announcing him and the commentators say it also, “The Texas Tornadooooo,Kerry Von Erich!!!” I just watched a match vs Mr Perfect where Vince says it continuously through the match.

Initially, WWE announcers referred to him as "The Texas Tornado" Kerry Von Erich, but eventually they dropped his Von Erich moniker, and only referred to him as the Texas Tornado. By the time his action figure hit the market, he was only being called the Texas Tornado, but his signature "Kerry Von Erich" was printed on the figure's box.

This episode made me cry just like him i have nine brothers and one sister I'm the youngest of all us there were ten the eldest who passed at only six months people look at me as the youngest but my brothers think I'm the more mature one because I can keep my emotions in i use to be really angry i don't know why I just was at seven teen i lost my father to a brain tumor and I remember that day i had came home from school i didn't work i had just gotten a copy of saints row four i found out i passed my algebra star test to graduate so it was a really good day as I sat playing my ma walks in she asked where I was that she thought I was at work she sat next to me looked me in the eye held my hands and said i need to tell you something your daddy passed away this morning he had a heart attack i felt the world stop my controller fell to floor the next thing i knew I was punching the floor over and over again again screaming yelling my mom holding me we went to my uncle's home i had shut down all i did was sobbing until we left my brothers the ones here in the states came comfort my mom and then they held me we had all lost our dad's they respected mine me and the eldest above me were both raised by him he loved my brother like he was his own flesh and blood we hugged each other they felt my pain were all in a group hugging the next week i missed school and I had a dream it was so real i remembered this park he took me a lot on Sundays it was this blue park swings slides sea saw were all blue as I'm walking I see him sitting on the swing he looks at me and smiles and I'm running to him and we hug but he's so much bigger then me I realized I'm a little boy and he kisses my head holding me all I did was cry telling him daddy I love you i miss i smelled his scent i felt his beard rubbing on my face felt his leather like skill it was him he looked at me and smiled telling me he loves me my mom and my brother and he will always be there when we need him he held my small hand in his and we walked and as we got to the edge of the park my back to normal he looked at me and hugged me and I hugged him not wanting to let go we then walked into the white void and I woke up.
I remember that dream i will never forget that dream and because of that dream i learned to control myself and remembered that my family is important to me the bond with my brothers is something i will always have and i kiss them and hug them every time i see them.
The story of the von Ericks is a sad tale of the family's loss but it's also a reminder of your family that things will get bad and it's easy to give up but it maybe hard to move on and to keep going but it's the right way to go.

I grew up in Grapevine, Tx. There was a racquetball club there that brought a lot of these guys in. Nice gym in an up and coming suburb next to the airport. It was no big deal to see Chris Adam's, any of the Von Erichs, Ultimate Warrior, Dick Murdoch, Freebirds etc. The Von Erichs were bigger than the Cowboys. Legends. But you also knew it was coming. After David and Mike everyone was waiting for Kerry. It really was sad. When Kerry did it, it was like maybe now he can rest. Wished he would have made it. Would have been real cool for his family and to hear him do shoots

lol, that was never going to happen. He just want disciplined enough. 33 is an unbelievable young age to die even in wrestling. Just too unstable. Doing Hogan's schedule, I doubt he could have lasted three months. He couldn't even do a diminished WWF schedule in 1990-91 without a lot of no shows. No way.

I remember when Kerry was busted. It was a big shocker at the time and no one could believe it. However, after hearing about how he would often show up for matches impaired, if at all, it isn't now. In fact, I'm surprised they didn't bring up the infamous match with Flair when he actually fell asleep during the match and how Flair had to put himself in holds. Fritz covered it up by saying that Kerry had a high fever and still managed to wrestle Flair to a time limit draw.
