I'm speechless. AM radio ran the way FM "used to" be ran and playing music at that. Today I can't imagine putting any effort into an AM show with actual music as trying to do so on FM is hard enough with no listenership thus no drive to even try these days.
Found KIIS AM's last night on air before 24/7 simulcasting. A total fun night but sad at the same time. soundcloud.com/livingonair/kiisam-last-night-onair
Did never American stations play physical media like vinyls? Seems to me that best practice was to record all music onto cartridges? Looks like they all got instance response when they hit that start button on the turntable.
they did up until the late 70s or 80s. it was just easier I imagine and it eliminates the possiblity of a record skipping. Though once in 86 I did hear a warped cart of Hearts' "Alone" on the air (KKBQ Houston), they must have worn out the tape. After a while the jock came on and dumped out of the song and said "You keep sounding like that and you're gonna stay alone".
In the late 60s/early 70s the station I worked (KGWA) at in Oklahoma used 45s. I started work at KGB-FM in 1986 and we had a wall of vinyl but were transitioning to CD. By the early 90s, we only used vinyl for some deep cuts we didn't have in normal rotation. Around 1997/98 we left CDs behind when we digitized everything to hard drives and transitioned to a Prophet Systems networked system. I'd say that these days no one plays vinyl or even CDs, except perhaps for small independent stations. Even most of them have started using some form of digitally networked automation. Now, most music distribution to radio stations is via download as opposed to CDs.
One possible reason might be the resilience of the AM signal. It can go places FM signals can't because AM isn't limited to line of sight. On the other hand, FM signals aren't blocked by such things as bridges and buildings. The propagational properties of each are different.
Object cpb: Okay Dorothy I'll gonna start sing a song. 102.7 Kiis FM (1981): And Dorothy I'm same sing song at different times. DEVON324 Teeth: It's gonna around. Byron: Dorothy!
Vaughn Baskin what I could see happen is that shoud KIIS-AM come back, it could be a classic hits flanker to the FM side, where they could play hits of the 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s, while also going in direct competition with KRTH. That would be something I’d like to see. Or, it can do what KWNZ did, go in a classic hits direction, while throwing in a few of today’s hits in rotation, maybe a couple per hour.
1985. The years don't come any better than that.
1988 was a great year, with a lot of cool music as well.
Met my first girlfriend the summer that year when we worked together.
I worked with him in car sales in 2002-2004. Great guy.
The 1980's, the last great decade of pop music.
Bring this guy back on air
R.I.P. to the deejay born Benjamin Aguayo. Benny mentored me when I was an intern at Oldies 93 KCBS-FM and was an encouragement.
I only heard about his passing this week. A damn shame. RIP Benny.
I can now put a face to the name many years after listening to cassette recordings of Benny sent to me by penpals when I lived in Nigeria.
Wow...live jocks playing music on AM.
This was when the playlist was simulcast with different jocks 5 mins apart on AM and FM.
Fantastic!
woow...in sidewalk talk the announcer names Madonna and jellybean, what a great success, jellybean as a producer and Madonna singing❤.
Sounds like it could be late winter 1986. I vividly remember these songs, I was in 7th grade. The 80s!
RIP Mr. Martinez
I remember KIIS am played 30 min mixes all day and night for about a year back in around 1989 or 1990...anyone remember that?

Yep, you're right. Quicksilver didn't come out until February 1986. So it is likely somewhere between early and mid-February 1986.
not only that, but The Bangles song ‘Manic Monday’ was released in 1986
1150 kiis am 30 minute hot mixes were pre recorded on tape no live mixers
Total pro. A lost art these days.

If I remember correctly, this was in 1988, but I'm not completely sure. Am I right?

Hey Naomi Rossiter, Angel Gibbs, and Sarah Wang Raise our hand come in up
I remember when kiss was on FM and AM frequency now there is only kiss FM oh ya I'm 44. Yrs old that currently live in San Francisco
This was before they changed formats to compete directly with 1580 KDAY.
I've wondered this for years. Why have an AM/FM version of the same station in the same market?

Because FM has better fidelity and AM's could capitalize on that by using both bands. @@ApartmentKing66
