  • Four-lane Youbou Lanes, operated by the Parks and Recreation department of the Cowichan Valley Regional District on the shores of Lake Cowichan (on Canada's Vancouver Island), is one of the only hand-set bowling centers in North America open to the public. (I know of only two others, both in the U.S. If there are any others, I doubt it's more than one or two).
Lennon, 14, and Jason, 28, are setting pins during glow-in-the-dark bowling on a Saturday night. Jason is the senior pin setter and is in charge of training all new recruits.
The lanes, attached to the community hall, have been in operation since 1951. Customers have the option of tenpin or Canadian five-pin bowling, which uses a smaller ball and stouter pins with a band around the middle. As you can see in the video, the bowling alley also serves as the unofficial town museum.
(And no, your eyes aren't fooling you - the pins on lane 2 are indeed upside-down. Call it pin-setter hijinks, made possible by the "peg" system which causes the pin spots to be slightly recessed in the pin deck).
