Great Camp Sagamore
The open-air bowling pavilion at Great Camp Sagamore, in the Adirondacks of New York, was constructed in 1911 atop a 6-foot tall concrete slab. The wood lanes have remained remarkably level despite a century of exposure to the elements and weather extremes.
Camp Sagamore was the lakeside getaway of Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt and his second wife, Margaret Emerson. Sagamore was one of several Adirondack Great Camps - resorts and summer retreats built for the enjoyment of the rich and famous of the time.
Alfred and Margaret were "sporty" people and wanted to expand the resort to include areas for friendly athletic competitions between guests, says Sagamore historian Robert Engel. The couple enjoyed entertaining beautiful, influential and famous people at their lakeside retreat. A popular way of entertaining was to hold organized sports competitions, pitting guests against one another. Bowling, tennis and croquet were all offered, and famous regulars included composer Jerome Kern, actor Gary Cooper and General George C. Marshall.

Переглядів 4,9 тис.5 років тому
Four-lane Youbou Lanes, operated by the Parks and Recreation department of the Cowichan Valley Regional District on the shores of Lake Cowichan (on Canada's Vancouver Island), is one of the only hand-set bowling centers in North America open to the public. (I know of only two others, both in the U.S. If there are any others, I doubt it's more than one or two). Lennon, 14, and Jason, 28, are set...

Bergstrom memorial fundraiser at Holden Village

A video about the fundraising effort to restore the bowling lanes at Holden Village, a Lutheran community and retreat center (and former mining town) located in the woods above Lake Chelan in central Washington state. These may just be the most remote bowling lanes in the lower 48. A two-hour ferry ride up the lake is followed by an 11-mile bus ride on forest roads (with a 2,000-foot elevation ...

Hand-set candlepin bowling in Littleton, MA

A visit to two hand-set candlepin lanes in a barn outside Littleton, Massachusetts. Brian Bazylinski and Mark Ricci, co-proprietors of Riverwalk Lanes, brought me here for a visit, along with Mark's 5-year-old son and our new friend Greg Adkins. At one point you'll hear Mark refer to a "half-Worcester" (pronounced "Wooster") which is when a bowler takes either the 2-8 or 3-9 sleeper out of a fu...
Candlepins in York Beach, Maine

The sign says "BOWLING," but it's hard to know what to call this place. It's not really a bowling center or bowling alley; there's a souvenir and ice cream shop up front, and video games and miniature golf to the side. The six candlepin lanes are down a couple of steps, right behind racks of T-shirts and beach towels for sale. (Owner Bill Burnham Sr. tells me that another six lanes were removed...
