tempted to stream on kick because the revenue there would help me not only improve the stream with upgrades but it would also help me survive with income outside of streaming. i don't work and i am struggling with problems that might soon hit me later this year. my mom has breast cancer and i'm also supporting and helping her through it. i live with my parents and she hasn't been able to work. i don't drive or own a car and really need to learn how to drive and get a car of my own so i can also work a side job and further support my mom. but all i ever done with my life is write trophy guides for video games for ps3/ps4/vita/psvr. i retired from that and made the switch from console gaming to pc to pursue a dream job in competitive apex legends as a future coach one day for a professional team. i'm still chasing that dream and i will make it a reality.
But from the way Twitch treats people and their own streamers. Kick might overtake Twitch in the future real soon.

I normally stream on UA-cam, but I have been playing around with twitch and kick lately. On Kich I usually have about 4 to 8 viewers as a new streamer to tbe platform, and if I stream on Twitch I will only have one viewer (my wife). Kick is a no-brainer for New streamers. @harris I downloaded the vertical plug in, but cannot get it to work for streamlabs obs. Is there a way to get it to work with streamlabs, or do I just need to use OBS Studio to use it?

I hope twitch gets their head together and keeps going strong. I believe it's the best place to be still even now, and that's just coming from someone that don't trust kick or anything to do with gambling. Twitch yes does have their flaws but I trust them and UA-cam any day then these new platforms coming out. I mean look what happen to mixer? A platform I came from. I only trust the bigger guys now and I will always stay in the bigger spaces

Unfortunately Harris said on live he is not willing to create and run a streaming platform, though back then it was under different circumstances. I think nowadays it is way easier to compete: Copy Twitch, but make videos and clips browsable, like YT. Put effort into the Streamer Utility. And boom you will be the best platform for livestreamers. It is more about server cost though...

ehh just because he has a good analysis of the landscape doesnt mean he would be able to create a new platform and help it grow. I would support it but I dont think the answer is to just push ur favorite creator to make a new platform. there needs to be differentiation and obviously hundreds of millions-billions of dollars. in the end of the video he does offer a good solution for whoever decides to take it but the winner of the live stream platforms will be the one who manages to incorporate a mix of short form(tiktok like algorithm) with streaming. tiktok has a HUGE live stream audience but it still has a long way to go as the community aspect is essentially non existent

  • @RyNoBlade17
    @RyNoBlade17 Рік тому +47

I find it very fascinatingly how you explained the filters because take that same analogy and apply it to music. Someone could discover their favorite artist by hearing a single song on the radio (short form) and now they might search for more and more music from the artist and start diving into their discography (long form), and they listen and listen so much so that they start to fall in love with that artist and now want to go to a concert (live streaming). It honestly just makes sense.

Hey Harris! I had an interesting experience with short to live form content. So recently (it was probably months ago idk) youtube added the feature to show when you are live while scrolling through shorts. I had an idea to upload a short 5 minutes after I go live to see if that would bring any traction. Turns out it does! I went from averaging 4 viewers to 20-30 in my recent streams. While I understand it may not be huge numbers, it is massive for me! So I think with youtube there is a cross over with short to live content.

A lot of your videos surrounding camera information, editing tips, light, etc, they have all helped me earn a steady and healthy income, even though it wasn't from twitch. I am definitely not an incredible editor, but the skills needed to create content nowadays can transfer over to so many other jobs. When I talk to fellow streamers/content creators, I've been saying for MONTHS that streaming shouldn't be someone's "bread and butter." So thank you for confirming that
As for the platforms (TikTok aside), I'm interested to see how the looming recession shapes the landscape. It already seems like Amazon is doing Amazon things and laying people off. Will this be what makes Daddy Bezos shut down Twitch? Will he site the Recession as his reasons? I'm still optimistic about UA-cam, only because it's got a background for content creation, and it's backed by Google. Yes, the Recession is going to hit them, but unlike Twitch/Amazon, Google won't pull the plug in the name of greed.

    - "kicks" (like bits), but you can give them to viewers and mods too.
    - A unique way to get discovered
Also, for me only 1/3 of the "featured streams" on my Kick homepage are gambling. I could be a minorty but they don't appear to be pushing it down our throats (yet). When I view from incognito mode I actually have to scroll quite far down to get to "Recommended Gambling Channels".

I got contacted by Kick to multi stream to their platform with the promise of being promoted on their home page. Obviously I was intrigued because I heard a lot about the 95/5 revenue split.
I went to check out the website and the top 3 streams were Gambling and literal pornographic material. This was on their homepage with thousands of viewers.
Now me myself being 17, aka still a minor and knowing that my main audience is between 13 and 16, I didn't want my face to be featured next to a stream that includes porn, nor did I want to expose my audience to that.
The 95/5 split and the 'promoting on the homepage' seems nice, but to me it's not worth it. I don't want to be associated with a platform that promotes gambling and has no moderation in place to prevent previously mentioned stuff from being livestreamed.

Thank you for this. 95% of nothing is nothing which is what creators will get once Kick gets hit with multiple law suits for copyright breeches. Twitch might be taking money out your pocket, but sometimes it’s better the devil you know.

People have been saying that about Kick since it was released and nothing has happened yet. I doubt any lawsuits will come. Kick is the talk of the town and getting a ton of publicity. And a lot of new streamers are doing very well on the site. Twitch has no discoverability to grow, & Will ban people without telling you the reason, & only prioritize big streamers. New streamers are better off trying Kick.

In regards to discovering short form content leading to discovering the creators streams from there. That's actually how I discovered from streamers recently(like Extra Emily). I was recommended their clips channel which had links to their main UA-cam and Twitch channels and started subbing(UA-cam) and following(Twitch) from there. So even from a viewer perspective short form video is great for discovering new streamers. Great advice on that for sure 😄

Loved this video dude! I needed the talk about the current Kick and Twitch thing. My thought for you: If you partnered with or had your own streaming service, people would love that. Your ethics and heart seem genuine to a lot of people. "Judge a man by the size of his heart." I understand that working on a streaming service may not be what you want right now, so I won't hold my breath. But hey!... I just want to throw that thought at you. Wishing happy living to you brotha!

THANK YOU HARRIS! This is exactly what I needed! I don't make hardly any money on Twitch (maybe $50 every 4 months). For me, streaming has become a place to build relationships with people who enjoy what I do and the content I create. Those relationships will hopefully turn into people sharing my content to others and engaging further themselves. Now to get consistent with content!

Yea I agree, I was all in on live streaming. UA-cam pushed it for a time. Then made a hard turn at UA-cam shorts. And to be honest, it’s far better than live-streaming. More people see and share them. My business is doing well from them. And I’m seeing so many questions I haven’t seen in years because of the broad audience I can hit now.

Thanks for the video. Small/Medium streamer here and I have no intention of going to Kick. Another part of the weirdness at Twitch is the advertising. About 6 months ago, they did some great deals for running ads and then those deals really tanked and I stopped responding to them in December. I'm still rolling ads, but launched a Patreon to try to fill the ad money hole. My hope is to shut the adverts completely down. Wondering what you may be thinking about their ad roll out and the shrinking revenues from that. I'm guessing they're so far behind Adwords at Google/UA-cam that they got over their heads? As a streamer for 6-years, I still love the platform and the content. It literally saved me from a homeless shelter and the show will keep going on! Thanks for your advice. CHEERS!

Though, quick question if anyone has a moment. Some clips I make are less than 60 second, but when I add them to youtube they suddenly are longer than 60 seconds. Is that just a matter of the video format?

I think for new content creators a streaming day should be viewed mostly as a filming day. Use your vod to create videos, short and long form. Then like Harris said, the stream can be the supplementary to the edited work.

I've been wrestling with the idea of switching to Kick, as it's pretty much all I see anybody doing and/or talking about these days. It's undeniable that a 95/5 split, if sustained, would take some massive pressure off so many creators, including myself. But, as someone who made the switch to D-live and reached Global Partner there (the highest form of partner on the platform), I'm more than hesitant after going through what became of that platform. You said so many things, Harris, that I have been thinking as I watch swaths of people switch over. Thank you for validating what I've been feeling and thinking.

I used to stream on Twitch a while ago, but due to changing day jobs and then health issues had to stop. Day job has changed and health issues are gradually being resolved, so was thinking of returning to Twitch. After watching yours and Devan's videos, looks like streaming to YT and Twitch/Kick would be a good idea, along with the video creating. I'm just beginning to learn how to edit vidoes.
