I think using common sense with safety in any metropolitan area is necessary anywhere in the world. I always feel safe and relaxed in Chile.
I lived in Santiago for 3 years and never needed air conditioning. The weather is like the San Francisco Bay Area but the seasons are reversed. There's about three chilly and rainy months of winter and the rest of the year is really nice. You guys happened to arrive during a heat wave. The protests are over pensions and minimum wages and things like that. You hear a lot about how great the economy is but the money all goes to the top. I worked with rich Chileans at a multinational firm when I was there and they do have a bit of a "let them eat cake" type of attitude for the most part. I hired a maid to come and clean my apartment and do laundry one day a week. They guy recommending her said "only pay her 8 dollars a day. No more". I paid her twice that and even then I felt totally cheap. There's a really delicious type of salsa there called "pebre". It's too late to recommend it I guess so I hope you tried some. The south cone is so cozy, specially chile, you should try visit valparaíso or the rural parts on the south of the country if you have the chance, love from lima.
Yes you say right its cozy places. I already visit these places 2 year before . especially puyehue and its surrounding areas very beautiful for relaxation.
Santiago has really interesting and beautiful places, like Santa Lucía hill años San Cristobal hill (the metropolitan park) on my first time I thought how people could get there by walking, but in the next years became very com to my jogging to te top. It’s full of museums like the natural sciences on Quinta Normal, the costanera center a complex with South America’s tallest building (300 m). An hour trip could get you in to Aviña Del Mar and Valparaiso (the 5th region of Chile) with beautiful places that make you fall in love. To the north on the third region (about 6 hours from Viña Del Mar ) is located the Elqui’s valley, the biggest wine producer region and the worlds most clear skies (together with Atacama’s region on the country’s northern region). By the south on the 8th region you could find the Lakes region with Valdivia, and Osorno, and down to Punta Arenas you could find the worlds most austral lands. A fun fact, that place (the Chilean part of the Patagonia) is only the midpoint of the Chilean territory, the rest is located over the antártica. Hope you’ll enjoyed your time at that beautiful place
I love Santiago, you guys missed all the street food around the corner from where you were shooting. It reminded me to the scene in Reforma in Mexico DF, by the castle in Chapultepec. On top of being a city that mixes old and new, latin with western all the time, you get the Andes and it's magnificence in your backyard. I hope Chile recovers soon from the social and economic crisis. Be strong amigos!
I love Santiago and the locals are amazing and super helpful. I got told a few times to be careful as I accidentally pulled out money of an evening to pay for something. However, I never felt unsafe
