Totally agree with you!!! I learned this from Eric Sato when he was with the National Team back in the 90's. He even said to approach from more inside the court and bang the ball line or off the block out of bounds. If you hit at an angle from the outside as a right handed hitter your only real power is cross court. What are you going to do when they triple block you??? Plus most balls hit off the block go inside your court area. Now if you jump like some the the guys at the elite level you can get away with this approach. My other pet peeve is a right handed hitter hitting outside and tipping with their left hand! Ugh!!!!! You can tool the block with your right hand and swipe it out of bounds. With you left hand you only sweep the ball back into your court. Hope all of you that do both of these have good coverage by your team, you'll need it! Also, what's with the straight in approach by the outside and middles in today's volleyball??? Angles are your friend!

George Black I will try to include such a demonstration. Thanks for the suggestion. It makes sense to do it that way.

I ,ve been opossite many years and every hit is different. It depends on if the setter is located near the 2 position or near the 3 position. Opposites most of the times have to fix the set so it depends from where you get the ball and where you want to put the ball. If we have to state a rule... I would say the approach is over the line +- 50 cms

If you’re a left handed player you want to approach sightly outside the sideline.

Sorry bro but you're totally wrong with that tip. The perfect angle for the rightside approach is to start from max 50cm outside the court and go straight to the opposite 6. This way you have no problem hitting line (full power hit), crosscourt (full power hit too), and you're not even bothered by bad sets that push the ball outside the antenna cuz you can still face the court to save the ball, which is impossible if you start from inside the court.

+Kevin Jadin Thanks for your comment. I like that you challenge me. We can't all agree and good stuff always comes out of considering different points of view.
I think you and I are saying the same thing. Starting on the line, a little bit inside the line or a little bit outside the line is almost the same thing. It really is a matter of preference at this point but I think you and I understand that the most important thing is to be approaching perpendicularly to the net to have all angles. The mistake would be to come in with a big angle as a right handed player.
That being said, I would encourage you to watch the best rightsides in the world play. Most of them stay inside the court when the set comes from further on the left side of the court (from position 4).

Agree with jump volleyball. Many of the best men's outside players start slightly inside the line for the right side approach. Two I like are Marius Wlazly and Matt Anderson.

Those two are great examples of this airbup

I agree with jadin. The best rightsides in the world are working with consistent locations and are reaching high. To start learning the technique I think coming from off court is better. It allows a little room for error with the ability to the adjust to the set. Another pro not mentioned is if the ball is low and you have to make up for it for with speed, coming from slightly outside allows to adjust and move perpendicularly to the set and joust oppose to running straight after the net and potentially hurting yourself or the block.
