    The "open bottom causing jammings" is an armchair mith.
    Already Vladimir Grigoryevich Fyodorov, the future designer of the Fedorov Avtomat, in his observations on the Russo-Japanese war, indicated how the Mannlicher actions in the mud and snow tended to be more reliable than Mauser/Moisin actions, because the passage of the clips kept them clean, while the Mauser/Moisins magazines became tanks of frozen mud, reducing those rifles to single-shooters.
    That had been confirmed in WWI, where nor the Austrian Steyr Manlicher (an unicum among straight-pull bolt action) nor the Carcano suffered of reliability problems in the trench warfare.
    The only known reliability problem with the Carcano is caused by the pretty crude follower, that in some sample has problem in raising the last round of the clip straight.

      I don't think it's a myth just overemphasized. The French believed that mud was a problem on their Berthier series of rifles hence why they added a device to seal it.

      I doubt it, sks is much more fun to shoot being semi auto and we have mountains of cheap chinese x39 in-country (assuming you're Canadian like the guy in the video). I wouldn't buy a Carcano with investment in mind, buy it because you want a fun little bolt gun with some history for cheap.

      I mean the issue is ammo availability: it sucks in North America. I wouldn't hold your breath for new manufacturers of 6.5 carcano either until zoomers like me get priced out of the AR (or the SKS if you live north of the border).

    @17:15 With the Rear Sight flipped forward, the Battle Sight is 300 meters.
    Flipped back, it starts at 450 meters.
    And officially, the Sight Alignment apparently is to have the Front Sight in the bottom of the Rear Sight "V".
    Regarding Reloading, Prvi Partizan 6.5mm 123gr FMJs in .268 will work quite well; along with heavier straight-sided .264s with a flat base, i.e Boat Tails won't work. Keep Velocities to ~2200 FPS.
    Also, a lot of Reload Info can be found on a site called gunboards.

    Good review and you explained the bolt breakdown well unlike most I’ve seen. The only thing you missed is the progressive twist rifling that helped to stabilize the very long bullet. I used 156 grain round nose ammo from Norma to good effect. I don’t know if those are still available. This weapon has a generally bad reputation that I believe is not deserved.

      Mine didn't keyhole the 0.264" bullets. It even kinda grouped them. The only thing holding me back is that the sights can't be used to really be on paper, I'd have to build up the front sight if I really wanted to use this rifle.

    • @VTPSTTU
      @VTPSTTU 3 роки тому +2

      @@Huntinggearguy For me, the tests that would matter are not about accuracy but about bullet performance.
      I'd like to see how the 160 grain, FMJ bullet would perform on hitting a concrete curb. One of the theories is that Oswald's third shot hit the curb by the triple underpass directly. That produced a chip of concrete or fragment of bullet that caused the cut on James Tague's face. I've always thought that an intact bullet hitting the curb a few feet in front of someone would cause so many chips of concrete and fragments of bullet that Mr. Tague would have had multiple cuts on his clothing.
      I'd also like to see that bullet hitting a true simulated skull at eighty yards. The Aberdeen tests used cadaver skulls that had dried which changes properties and that were filled with ballistic gel which is not a good simulation for brain material. The later tests by Latimore used cadaver skulls filled with paint. That's a better simulation of brain material, but he was shooting from only a few feet. To me, both of those tests failed to serve as an accurate test of whether these FMJ bullets should have fragmented on hitting a human skull at that distance and the reduced velocity of a bullet that was eighty yards from the barrel. The Discovery Channel used a better skull simulation and shot at the right distance, but they never told us how the bullet performed. They also made only one successful shot on the head, so that would offer no repeatability even if they had analyzed the bullet correctly.

      @@VTPSTTU none of what you said matters because if they cast their own bullets all tests with factory rounds would be worthless. Similar with comparisons about power levels/velocity since you wouldn't know what type of powder or how much

    • @VTPSTTU
      @VTPSTTU 2 роки тому

      @@nk-dw2hm Who cast their own bullets? I would ideally like to see these tests done with the same kind of ammunition that Oswald used. Because that company is out of business, I'd want to see someone simulate those rounds as much as possible. I'm fairly certain that the loadings of the Oswald bullets are very well known. That company would almost certainly have given the Warren Commission records of how much and what kind of powder they used. No one in this scenario has cast their own bullets. Finding a modern source of those bottleneck bullets would be difficult. Mimicking the powder charge would not be difficult.

    Privi loads their factory ammo w/ .264 for some reason, and they sell ".268" bullets for reloading that only actually measure .2665, not even .267 and that's from a 150 dollar Starrett micrometer. So none of my 4 different Carcano carbines would shoot any of that, commercial or the reloads. I've tried two types of cast bullets, the Lee Midsouth shooters mold, and the NOE 13x grain 270 mold, no dice on either of those as well.
    These carbines are tough to get to shoot decent. I've seen all kinds of people claim theirs are great, but there are no vids of anyone grouping these things benched besides Koba and maybe one other dude and he only shot well w/ Koba's ammo.
    I have some Steinel cast bullets to try, and some of their solid brass but those are going to be too small Im sure. I may eventually get the heavier NOE 270 mold that Koba uses. I messed up and bought the lighter one, think it's 136 grain and none of my guns like it.
    I should say I expect any decent milsurp to shoot a 5 shot group about the size of my fist at 50 yards with my properly dialed reloads. The best I've gotten from any Carcano is a dinner plate. The only previous milsurps of mine, out of 55 or so that wouldn't meet this standard at least on occasion were completely shot out bores with barely visible rifling (an Argentine cavalry carbine and a Finn M27). All four of my Carcano carbines range from good to very good bores, so being shot out is not the issue.
    Anyone that has Carcano carbines in 6.5 that will shoot that well, I'd love to see a vid if possible. My dad bought 3 as well from the same batches in 2020 and he's not having luck either and has been reloading for 50 years.

      To load Single Rounds, the easiest thing to do is search "3d printed single load blocks".
      Buy one or have one printed for you.
      It's easier than the prefered way of single loading, which is to partially load the Cartridge into the Chamber, push the rear down, then slide the Case Head under the Bolt "Lips".
      Loading any other way may eventualy break the Extractor.

    The problem with the Carcano that was allegedly used to kill JFK is that it did not work. The scope was not even mounted nor bore sighted. A shooter could have hit nothing.,

      @@Huntinggearguy hard to say which one will group the best . The Carcano will have lighter recoil and should be flatter shooting , but the sights & bullet diameter works against you . The Mosin will have a lot more recoil , sights a little better , then working the bolt . Should be interesting , yet on the battlefield dead is dead your not going to complain about what bullet killed you
