You should put your flour and rice in the freezer for a few days then let it thaw out before storing it. It kills the larvae that already lives in it so you don’t get bugs hatching.

Yes! As true as this is... imagine having a large enough deep freezer AND that said freezer is empty enough a few days for flour and rice though.

If you look at the amount of meat that was bought to go in the freezer, there would have been enough room. It's all about planning. And, I would rather freeze in smaller portions and store, than to open my 5 gallon container and find it was of no good due to the bugs running through it. I'm sure she will figure it out and do her best.❤

@@elizabethdirks6533 not a problem if she puts in in smaller portions than the bag she purchased it in-and it doesn’t all have to be in the freezer at once if freezer space is limited. She could take her time and get it all in eventually and be bug free.

Kim, I think your flour bucket was infested with weevils. The larvae comes in the flour from the store-the larvae later hatch out and thus the bugs! To prevent this you should freeze the flour for at least 3 days before storing long term. I do it and never have that happen anymore. I’ve thrown LOTS of buggy flour in the past- but no more 😊Probably would be a good idea with those large bags to divide flour into gal. Size ziplocks before freezing. I’m here for the homestead building-you got this! Have a great Thanksgiving!

Came here to say this! lol I will say in an abundance of caution for more long term storage I would freeze 3 days then bring to room temp and then refreeze for 24 more hours. Same thing for rice. This kills live bugs and then also kills any surviving larva that might hatch later after you bring it to temp. Do not ask me how I know this. 🤣

@@Dragonfly20233 I've never had to refreeze, & tbh, I've left flour in the freezer many times for up to a wk bc I was too busy to vacuum seal. After freezing, I then seal, date, & put it in containers - some in 5gal buckets, & some in large, airtight containers. I seal all dry goods, incl individual pouches of things like dry milk. I started our huge pantry 2ish yrs ago, & reached my goals of having enough for 3mos, then 6mos, & beyond 1yr. We also now have big gardens, & I pressure can up as much as possible. We prepare bc anything could happen - power outages, weather disasters, hyperinflation, civil unrest, supply chain issues, natural disasters, etc. Having chickens & growing our own food has been a struggle, but it's all so worth it!

These homestead vibes are top notch. The potatoes may rot instead of grow since the cut part hasn't been cured yet. You would also want to wait until a couple sprouts are showing on the potato. If you aren't using seed potatoes, you can use organic potatoes that have started to sprout. You can just leave them on your counter or in your pantry until you see sprouts. You will get a higher volume of potatoes quicker if you do this.

Everything happens for a reason. 4 years ago I found your channel and since then I was amazed by how awesome your family is. Today after seeing this video, I’m convinced you are the family my mother sent me to every summer for school break. My most memorable experiences were formed there. I learned where food came from, how to care for the animals that gave us sustenance. My dream would be to provide that for my children, yet I’m still too far from that becoming a reality. However, you are living my dream and I can’t be more happy for you. You are doing something so great. Those kids will never forget it❤

Im so jealous of your cast iron find. However it’s actually the lid for the cast iron Dutch oven but you can cook in it too. The best part is it’s a two in one. I was never lucky enough to find a lid. I would also suggest that you put an alarm on your deep freezer. They have a couple different kinds that sound an actual alarm or are synchronized to an app on your phones to tell you the doors been left open. With kids and a hectic life leaving it open and losing everything would be a nightmare.

If you wash your cast iron skillet, reseason it. Rub oconut oil or bacon grease all over pan. Bake for 1 hour at 400°F. I wipe mine out until I make something messy in it. You'll see it rust if it gets wet. That's okay. Season it again. Works for me.

Homestead, that’s a great thing to do with your kids. When I was younger, I grew all the vegetables and fruit to feed my family for the year. As I look back, Google wasn’t a thing, I had a book, sent soil samples to the agricultural center and get a print out of what I needed to augment the soil in each area. I remember I needed to add lye to the potato area. My orchard had apple trees, and blueberry bushes. I also had strawberry plants that the kids ate as soon as they were red. They ate peas right from the pod, and corn pulled from the stalks. I’m not sure how I did it all, with kids and working full time. But they are some of the best memories. My kids are grown and still talk about “remember when”. When you mentioned your fruit trees, I realized none of them are grown in Pennsylvania! I also baked bread every week, I had a coal stove and let it rise on the top of the stove. Good luck with those potatoes, I never saw them planted like that. But there is nothing better than fresh dug potatoes and carrots. Try putting a few carrot seeds in those bags with the potatoes to see if they grow.

Ms. Whisk, sometimes the flour comes with little critters already in the bag. The way to prevent them from growing in your storage is to put the bags of flour, meal, corn, oats etc, into your freezer for at least a week, to freeze the little @#!'s to death before they grow and multiply. My Ouma also used to shove an old fashioned wax candle in the bucket of flour, for some reason it kept the pesky weevils away.

Just a FYI. After you cut potato it’s good to let in skin over for a day. Also, some potatoes grow down and some grow more toward the top of the soil. You probably will get potatoes no matter what you do. When food wants to grow, nothing will prevent it, for the most part. Then it’s just try and try till you master it. I have been gardening for 50 years, what do I know. I do know some things about gardening. I love it! So proud of you for learning to homestead. It can be fun and rewarding! 🎉❤😊

Kim, Google went plant potatoes in Tampa. They are a cool season crop. Certain types are better than others. Some for your area are white skinned LaChipper, Segago and Yukon Goes. It takes 80 to 120 days until harvest. Seed potatoes are best. They should be chitted, sprouts starting. Can be cut into pieces then need a day or so to dry where cut. I fertilize with cow manure, mix into soil and then place potato. Just google and you should be good to go. Knowledge will give you success.

Awesome! Garlic is super easy to grow you just plant the cloves. They have to be the right direction of course. 🙂 It's planting time for those here in wisconsin not sure about Florida though. Speaking of cast iron skillets A Country Life here on YT has a super cast iron skillet pizza and she has a large family too! Now I should go look at my sourdough starter which I have not touched in a few months LOL! It's looking a little gnarly but I think it should be ok. 😂

My only suggestion is to get alarms on your fridges where you are storing stuff that alerts you if the temp falls below a certain amount.

When I lived on a farm,( our homestead) we raised chickens until we had over 100 and sold eggs. I also made sourdough bread and since we didn’t have internet back then, I never heard anything about water so mine came straight out of the faucet and we had city water.I kept it going for a really long time and shared starter with a lot of other people. Eventually, the family got tired of eating it and I let it die. As far as the iron skillet goes, they are not non stick . They have to be seasoned. The one you bought at the thrift store was probably already seasoned. The big one , I’m not sure. Today, they may have a way to preseason them before you buy them. I used to have some but can no longer lift them.

the bugs may be weevils…it happens…and as much as we don’t want to know it, it’s part of processing and storing grains. freezing mos a great solution if you have the freezer space, even to portion in bags to freeze and then store. plus, a generator in case
of power failure cuz it would be quite a
loss with all that food. pretty cool, kim, what you’re doing😉

Don’t be afraid to make mistakes and learn and try things to see what works and doesn’t work for you and your family. Sending all the love! Can’t wait to watch and learn with you! ❤️

Kim, you need potatoes with eyes on them. Then you let them sit out and dry out for about a week, THEN plant them. These will probably just rot. Kevin from Epic Gardening has several videos about growing potatoes in bags.

So you noticed something 'off' with the baby chick and you didn't get help? That is really NOT responsible ownership with these little ones! Didn't feed the Sour Dough for a few days and the trees died? Seriously, Kim you have a world of information at your fingertips, use it! What a sad waste. If you are going to do this, PLEASE do it right (and stop giving advise to your followers until YOU actually know what you're doing)!! *But hey, at least you found a 'dress' for the Homestead occasion ugh....

I’m local if you’d be interested in some button quail! My little girls absolutely love them. We hatched 15 of them and will have to weed out pairs as we will only be able to keep 2 boys. You can only keep one boy per cage. So we need to find a few pairs a new home! Look them up, they’re adorable!

I find this helpful for the best dry beans : 4 cups of dry beans and 8 cups of water in the insta pot as is, run it on the bean setting once. Then either quick release or let it do it naturally either way works, salt the snot out of it and add a stick of butter and then do the bean setting a second time. They're tender, flavorful and have great juice😊

      @Luwanasue Рік тому +1

I cook my beans in the Insta pot also but being from the south we use fat back or bacon grease. I don’t use the beans setting i just cook them on high setting for 30-40 minutes and slow release. 😊
