Many people can leave their marks on your life, but only a few can leave their marks on your heart. You are one of the very few, my friend!
Yes!!!!! Kim is a pure gem
Me too ❤❤❤❤
I agree!
Oh yes, very lovely❤
So much. ❤i adore this woman
You should put your flour and rice in the freezer for a few days then let it thaw out before storing it. It kills the larvae that already lives in it so you don’t get bugs hatching.
Yes! As true as this is... imagine having a large enough deep freezer AND that said freezer is empty enough a few days for flour and rice though.
If you look at the amount of meat that was bought to go in the freezer, there would have been enough room. It's all about planning. And, I would rather freeze in smaller portions and store, than to open my 5 gallon container and find it was of no good due to the bugs running through it. I'm sure she will figure it out and do her best.❤
@@elizabethdirks6533 not a problem if she puts in in smaller portions than the bag she purchased it in-and it doesn’t all have to be in the freezer at once if freezer space is limited. She could take her time and get it all in eventually and be bug free.
I also do that with dried beans
I have never heard of freezing flour and rice, I have some free space I am going to do this. Thanks for the tip :)
Kim, you are so inspiring! You are the woman across the room. Thanks for being our friend!
she sure is!!!
Kim, I think your flour bucket was infested with weevils. The larvae comes in the flour from the store-the larvae later hatch out and thus the bugs! To prevent this you should freeze the flour for at least 3 days before storing long term. I do it and never have that happen anymore. I’ve thrown LOTS of buggy flour in the past- but no more 😊Probably would be a good idea with those large bags to divide flour into gal. Size ziplocks before freezing. I’m here for the homestead building-you got this! Have a great Thanksgiving!
I was making muffins for a house full of guests. When I added the wet ingredients to the dry, the flour started to crawl 😱😱 life lesson learned ! Freeze the flour!
Came here to say this! lol I will say in an abundance of caution for more long term storage I would freeze 3 days then bring to room temp and then refreeze for 24 more hours. Same thing for rice. This kills live bugs and then also kills any surviving larva that might hatch later after you bring it to temp. Do not ask me how I know this. 🤣
I second the freezing first.
Amazing info! Thanks so much I’ll have to freeze it!!
@@Dragonfly20233 I've never had to refreeze, & tbh, I've left flour in the freezer many times for up to a wk bc I was too busy to vacuum seal. After freezing, I then seal, date, & put it in containers - some in 5gal buckets, & some in large, airtight containers. I seal all dry goods, incl individual pouches of things like dry milk. I started our huge pantry 2ish yrs ago, & reached my goals of having enough for 3mos, then 6mos, & beyond 1yr. We also now have big gardens, & I pressure can up as much as possible. We prepare bc anything could happen - power outages, weather disasters, hyperinflation, civil unrest, supply chain issues, natural disasters, etc. Having chickens & growing our own food has been a struggle, but it's all so worth it!
Bravo!!! Chickens are the gateway drug to farming. I am so thankful for you sharing your journey. The more we return to living off the land, the better we can collectively weather the storms of life.
Next, goats 😂
Kim I Love how cheerful you are you make my days better when I watch your video s. Thank you for making my days better
Chick-olas Cage! 😂 Kim, I'm excited for for this new adventure! Good luck learning and have fun!
Yeah his sleeping now… I’ll let him know you like his name.
Kim, Put BAY LEAVES in your flour, no bugs!! My parents and Grandmother did it so do I. It works I never get bugs. Just remember to look for the bay leaves before you bake. Love the little chicks, so cute! You are doing awesome!!! Have a great Thanksgiving!
Elenore is all mom and Avelina is so Alex. (I know you know this- its just rare we see their faces, and they are looking more and more like their parent- gorgeous, precious and lucky kiddos)
OMG KIM! You got your chickens!!! ❤❤❤ Getting our chickens was one of the best things we ever did!
I have never had luck with a cast iron skillet my food always sticks.
your skillet is not properly “ seasoned”. look up on Google and DO NOT SCRUB CLEAN WITH SOAP OR BRILLO PADS..
These homestead vibes are top notch. The potatoes may rot instead of grow since the cut part hasn't been cured yet. You would also want to wait until a couple sprouts are showing on the potato. If you aren't using seed potatoes, you can use organic potatoes that have started to sprout. You can just leave them on your counter or in your pantry until you see sprouts. You will get a higher volume of potatoes quicker if you do this.
DW needs to make a scented candle “sour dough starter” 😂😂
omg. THAT'S IT!!! I'm going to DM them!! haaha
Haha!!
I don’t know if he scents are good for us.
Kimberly Whisk has finally got her new chicks! 🎉🎉 🐥🐣 The Whisk Homestead? The Wadsworth Homestead? Florida fresh eggs and more by Kimberly Whisk! 😆
I feel like homesteading is the new "it" thing to do and I am so here for it. Love that you are enjoying this new old journey!
My husband put a live feed on our chicken coop and called it "Coop Cam" LOL. Homesteading has been one of the absolute best decisions of our lives ❤ love this video!!!
Everything happens for a reason. 4 years ago I found your channel and since then I was amazed by how awesome your family is. Today after seeing this video, I’m convinced you are the family my mother sent me to every summer for school break. My most memorable experiences were formed there. I learned where food came from, how to care for the animals that gave us sustenance. My dream would be to provide that for my children, yet I’m still too far from that becoming a reality. However, you are living my dream and I can’t be more happy for you. You are doing something so great. Those kids will never forget it❤
Im so jealous of your cast iron find. However it’s actually the lid for the cast iron Dutch oven but you can cook in it too. The best part is it’s a two in one. I was never lucky enough to find a lid. I would also suggest that you put an alarm on your deep freezer. They have a couple different kinds that sound an actual alarm or are synchronized to an app on your phones to tell you the doors been left open. With kids and a hectic life leaving it open and losing everything would be a nightmare.
I need an alarm for my regular fridge I let it open all night last week😩 right after stocking up
Kim! Dawn at minimal mom had a great tip with watering new trees, get a big bucket and drill a hole in the bottom. Put the bucket right beside the tree and the water will slowly trickle out and give them a good deep watering!
If you wash your cast iron skillet, reseason it. Rub oconut oil or bacon grease all over pan. Bake for 1 hour at 400°F. I wipe mine out until I make something messy in it. You'll see it rust if it gets wet. That's okay. Season it again. Works for me.
Grab your overalls and head on down to the Wads homestead! We're stocking up, getting chicks and becoming a pro at sourdough. That was an hour of fun for all. Thanks for the happy, Kim. To YOU reading this, YOU are NEEDED and LOVED! xoxo
She is a gem, and l admire her determination. It's not even "New Year new Kim" yet here we are on the Wads Homestead.
@@brilliantbutblue I loved it too!🥰
❤❤❤❤ to you too!
I give it six months. Prove me wrong Kim. ❤
it is a lot and you’d need to have someone watching the birds and caring for them when away on vacation
Homestead Whisk 😂 if Kim can pull this off and sustain it, then ANYONE can 👍
You are absolutely going to love your feathered children! Mine are 5 and 3 years old. Egg production has been reduced, due to the colder days with fewer hours of light; however, they are happy!!! They "purr," when they get a treat like blueberries or croissants. Come to think of it, I do too! 😂
You venturing into homesteading is like my favorite thing ever. These are the goals in my heart, but hard to achieve when drowning. You make it feel attainable. Thank you for being an inspiration always 🙏🏻.
Barely ever clicked so fast on a new video. Just got past the chicks, but homestead is definetely my era at the moment ❤ looking forward to the rest of the video 😊
Chicken less cage!!! Betty White?! She would have loved to be named after a chicken!! I love it!! You seem so excited and I love your enthusiasm to try all of these new things. Is there anything that you can’t do?! I think not! This was so fun!!
I think it was Chickolas Cage, like Nicolas Cage 😆 He's an important part of the Wads family 😅
@@HomeschoolMamaJ 😂🤣 I should have known better!
Yes girl, as a fellow Floridian, I agree with your assessment on “full sun”. Im on year three of attempting to homestead with little success ☹️ everything keeps dying and my only citrus tree hasn’t produced fruit in four years (partly bc the blossoms “disappear” once they show up) excited to learn from you!
Shade cloth and irrigation helps a ton
@jessicasmith9599 also watch Acer Homestead! Kim watches her too!!
Homestead, that’s a great thing to do with your kids. When I was younger, I grew all the vegetables and fruit to feed my family for the year. As I look back, Google wasn’t a thing, I had a book, sent soil samples to the agricultural center and get a print out of what I needed to augment the soil in each area. I remember I needed to add lye to the potato area. My orchard had apple trees, and blueberry bushes. I also had strawberry plants that the kids ate as soon as they were red. They ate peas right from the pod, and corn pulled from the stalks. I’m not sure how I did it all, with kids and working full time. But they are some of the best memories. My kids are grown and still talk about “remember when”. When you mentioned your fruit trees, I realized none of them are grown in Pennsylvania! I also baked bread every week, I had a coal stove and let it rise on the top of the stove. Good luck with those potatoes, I never saw them planted like that. But there is nothing better than fresh dug potatoes and carrots. Try putting a few carrot seeds in those bags with the potatoes to see if they grow.
Oh my word!! Never knew you wanted to start a simple homestead. Excited to see what you can do.
My mom had pumpkins on her porch one fall, and squirrels ate them as they do. Well next year she had grown her own pumpkins with out any work!
You are going to be great as a homesteader!! Can’t wait to watch your new adventures!!
Yes, it was just a matter of time ❤🎉
They say to let the bread cool completely before the first cut because it's still cooking on the inside even after out of the oven. I love the lifestyle ❤
Maple syrup doesn't expire as long as no ingredients are added. It is like honey. Wow what a pleasant surprise on the New Era @ the Wads 🥰 Love the chickens too!
Oh no! I threw out two cans of good Quebec maple syrup from from a maple farm family because they were years old...
It does have a decent shelf life when unopened, but it does need to be refrigerated after being opened! We have a small maple syrup operation, and had to have it printed right on our labels. Would hate for anyone to have to toss that syrupy goodness because it got moldy!
You should keep it in the fridge after you open it though.
The black one is a rooster! I’m calling it 😂
Elinor looks just like you ❤ Can't wait to see the next chapter of your life, the Homestead Wife!
When storing flour and grains you can put some bay leaves inside the storage buckets along with whatever you are storing in them.
We have those insects in PR , be carful they can damage everything, rice, flower, cereal everything in your pantry. Make sure you take them out of the house quickly and check the rest of your food. Also use oxygen absorber they help you to keep everything fresh ❤
Never put oxygen absorbers in sugar. It'll turn it into a brick!
👵💜OMG you mastered sourdough, now there is no stopping you girl! Country Living magazines will be at your door tomorrow. You go girl!👵💜🐣🐤🐥🐣
Ms. Whisk, sometimes the flour comes with little critters already in the bag. The way to prevent them from growing in your storage is to put the bags of flour, meal, corn, oats etc, into your freezer for at least a week, to freeze the little @#!'s to death before they grow and multiply. My Ouma also used to shove an old fashioned wax candle in the bucket of flour, for some reason it kept the pesky weevils away.
Jess on the Farmer’s Table just posted a video on how to care for cast iron. I have my grandmother’s cast iron skillets and they are treasures to me.
I’m so excited to watch this! Have a wonderful day, Kim! The chick names are the best! 😂
We like our names!
I'm so happy for you to start the thing outside you've dream of for a while. Never give up on your dreams kimberly.
Oh wow Kim is getting into homesteading and hope everything goes well with it great video
Do you follow Becky at acre homestead? She has a lot of great tips and advice 😁
Another great video Kim! I’m so happy for you that you are able to start your homesteading journey! You’ve wanted this for so long 💜💜
KIM! You have no idea how excited I am that you are starting this new chapter. I have been contemplating my own homestead journey for a while! I love your attitude of not going for perfection or switching it all at once. Just picking some things you feel confident in. Thank you for being a friend and I so look forward to watching you on this journey. You’re an inspiration as always!❤️
Just a FYI. After you cut potato it’s good to let in skin over for a day. Also, some potatoes grow down and some grow more toward the top of the soil. You probably will get potatoes no matter what you do. When food wants to grow, nothing will prevent it, for the most part. Then it’s just try and try till you master it. I have been gardening for 50 years, what do I know. I do know some things about gardening. I love it! So proud of you for learning to homestead. It can be fun and rewarding! 🎉❤😊
Omg, Kim got her chickens!! Yayy!! We have 11 chickens. I love watching them grow from sweet little chicks ❤
Where I live in the west, we are done harvesting, have blown out our sprinkler systems, finished getting up the leaves and pulling out what’s left of our gardens until spring. We are basically tucking in for winter ❄️ You on the other hand, are still dressed for summer and planting potatoes and fruit trees🥔 ☀️ 🍎 😂 So happy you are getting back into chickens again, they are just so much fun! 🐓 🐥
That is something amazing I hope you enjoy this new adventure 🎉
Yes agree, it was just a matter of time ❤️🎉
The bugs in the flour came with it from the store. They are in the rice also. If you put the flour and rice in the freezer for a week that kills them. Dry pasta also
Good morning Wads! Kim, you’re the homesteading woman across the room! You got me looking up sourdough starters lol and you look super cute in the skirt and vest!
Omg..I wake up to Farmer Wads!! Omg so awesome!! My son has chickens, guinnies, turkeys, ducks, dogs, cats, baby goats!! The baby goats are hilarious.
Can’t wait to watch ,party people ❤ Kim you make my heart so happy ❤
Ms. Whisk homestead. I really liked today's intro song. Very relaxing. Can't wait to finish this video.
Good morning ☀️
Best way to start my day
You are amazing Kim ❤
a great youtuber to watch about their chickens and the care is themossfamily. they live in country not florida where temperatures will get really hot. they have easter-eggers and
a turkey and get a ton of eggs. it’s daily chores for their kids and they grew a small garden but more importantly they are teaching the kids life lessons to carry on😀
So SO excited for this new journey!!! I need a kick up the but to get my homestead started!! I hope you share everything, your wins and losses, what your learning about and information you need!!
So keen for this!!! 😍🍃🌻🌳
Kim, Google went plant potatoes in Tampa. They are a cool season crop. Certain types are better than others. Some for your area are white skinned LaChipper, Segago and Yukon Goes. It takes 80 to 120 days until harvest. Seed potatoes are best. They should be chitted, sprouts starting. Can be cut into pieces then need a day or so to dry where cut. I fertilize with cow manure, mix into soil and then place potato. Just google and you should be good to go. Knowledge will give you success.
OMG!!! The cutest chickens 😊 and that bread! You should be proud, you always brighten my day with your beautiful smile😊
It is time for the kids to start doing chores, this a great thing for them to do!
Awesome! Garlic is super easy to grow you just plant the cloves. They have to be the right direction of course. 🙂 It's planting time for those here in wisconsin not sure about Florida though. Speaking of cast iron skillets A Country Life here on YT has a super cast iron skillet pizza and she has a large family too! Now I should go look at my sourdough starter which I have not touched in a few months LOL! It's looking a little gnarly but I think it should be ok. 😂
Oh my gosh mama kim we love you what little cuties love from the uk xxx
OMG! I have been waiting for you to do something like this! I am so excited for you, and I cannot wait to go with you on this journey down homesteading. You are awesome! Please keep making videos, Kim.
My only suggestion is to get alarms on your fridges where you are storing stuff that alerts you if the temp falls below a certain amount.
This excites me! I'm so happy to follow this journey! I feel like we have a lot in common with things and now we have the homestead thing in common too so it makes me feel like we're even more alike. 😅 So fun!
Omgosh I JUMPED when I saw the chicken coop!!!!! Omgosh KIM!!!! I am so happy for you ❤ that's amazing it's everything to have chickolas cage!!!! 😂
Such an angel, thank you Kim!!! ❤🙏❤
Hope that all your plants produce a bountiful harvest
What an exciting season for you guys! I hope you have all the success on the Whisk homestead! 🤩
When I lived on a farm,( our homestead) we raised chickens until we had over 100 and sold eggs. I also made sourdough bread and since we didn’t have internet back then, I never heard anything about water so mine came straight out of the faucet and we had city water.I kept it going for a really long time and shared starter with a lot of other people. Eventually, the family got tired of eating it and I let it die. As far as the iron skillet goes, they are not non stick . They have to be seasoned. The one you bought at the thrift store was probably already seasoned. The big one , I’m not sure. Today, they may have a way to preseason them before you buy them. I used to have some but can no longer lift them.
Kim... Yayy!! You finally got your chickens! This is so exciting!
We love our new house!
@@TheChickenFamily23❤😂
I love it Kimmie! This way of life is how our parents & ancestors lived!!! Love it.
Wow! So exciting for you and your beautiful family! Have fun with your new project! 🦋🙏👍🏻👍🏻
My cat LOVED this video! We watch your videos together on the tv and she was glued to the screen watching your cute chickens. More chicken content please 😻
(I love your content as always Kim, thanks for your positive energy!)
Yay Kim, I’m so happy for you 😁👏🏻. Wonderful job with all you’ve done. Best of luck with your new homestead. 🐥🥚🥔🍞🥭🥑
the bugs may be weevils…it happens…and as much as we don’t want to know it, it’s part of processing and storing grains. freezing mos a great solution if you have the freezer space, even to portion in bags to freeze and then store. plus, a generator in case
of power failure cuz it would be quite a
loss with all that food. pretty cool, kim, what you’re doing😉
Those baby chickens are so cute 🥰. I love everything you do. Thank you for sharing.
So did the sixth chick not survive?
We love our name!
Lisa got all the UA-camrs onto the sourdough journey 😁, she got me started on it too and I love it! I’ve made a lot of her recipes and so far everything turned out delicious.
Ahhhh I’m so excited see you begin this journey! I’ve never seen a UA-camr start a homestead with us, they’ve already been established or very experienced. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes and learn and try things to see what works and doesn’t work for you and your family. Sending all the love! Can’t wait to watch and learn with you! ❤️
Baby chick peeps are so sweet and love the names. Whisk homestead sounds like a lot of fun.
Thanks for sharing your life.
Kim does NOT follow RULES so this is going to be INTERESTING🤔
Kim, you need potatoes with eyes on them. Then you let them sit out and dry out for about a week, THEN plant them. These will probably just rot. Kevin from Epic Gardening has several videos about growing potatoes in bags.
Um.. aligators like chicken .
So do coons, Fox, coyotes, owls, hawks etc. Preparing for possible predators is the number one priority with chickens. I'm sure she has done her research.
Kim. Add a few bay leaves in the flour and you won’t get any bugs. Also freezing flour you will not get any bugs. FYI
Oh no! Not another "homesteading" channel! That's what I liked about you...that you weren't. Oh well. Time to move on
With all that meat, you might want to think about a freezer on standby incase of malfunction, and maybe a generator in case of power outage. Good for you starting your homestead.
So sorry to see you jumping on the “homesteaders” bandwagon😥Not a fan, will be skipping those videos.
I think most of us will be doing some kind of homesteading!!! Something is coming and we need to get ready!!! Getting ready to do sourdough!
Ohhh God, another one "homesteading"🙄
Kim, I keep my cast iron in the oven. You have to try grilled cheese made with your sourdough in the cast iron. It’s THE best!!!
So you noticed something 'off' with the baby chick and you didn't get help? That is really NOT responsible ownership with these little ones! Didn't feed the Sour Dough for a few days and the trees died? Seriously, Kim you have a world of information at your fingertips, use it! What a sad waste. If you are going to do this, PLEASE do it right (and stop giving advise to your followers until YOU actually know what you're doing)!! *But hey, at least you found a 'dress' for the Homestead occasion ugh....
Ahhhhh, finally got chickens again!!! Yay!!! 🎉 call any local butcher, they’ll usually have beef to sell, we have a family of 5 and a 1/4 cow lasts us almost a year.
How exciting. You have to top up the potato bags with soil. Potatoes grow more vigorous if you do, they grow more roots/Potatoes.
Hey: I would recommend drip irrigation for your trees which you can put on a timer so you don`t have to remenber to water your plants.
Omg wow this is the earliest I've been for one of your videos!! Must be reading your mind kim lol 😊
Have you seen the grow bags, no digging up your lawn, you can find the best place for each plant. Thanks for showcasing that amazing dress, I was smitten as soon as I saw it. 😊 We are a family of 2, retired seniors, and I stock up just like you. Life's to busy to chase after groceries.
I just add bay leaves to the bottom of the bucket, some in the middle and a few on top....ive never had any problems with bugs in my flour, rice, cornmeal, oats, and pasta.
I’m local if you’d be interested in some button quail! My little girls absolutely love them. We hatched 15 of them and will have to weed out pairs as we will only be able to keep 2 boys. You can only keep one boy per cage. So we need to find a few pairs a new home! Look them up, they’re adorable!
Put wheels on the chicken coop to move every day or two, to fertilize your yard, and give them fresh bugs to eat.
I just love seeing your face! You make so many people happy, me especially! So glad to call you my friend! Great job on the starting of your homestead! You got this! 🎉
Ah so happy to see your dreams coming true! You’ve been talking about chickens for so long!
I find this helpful for the best dry beans : 4 cups of dry beans and 8 cups of water in the insta pot as is, run it on the bean setting once. Then either quick release or let it do it naturally either way works, salt the snot out of it and add a stick of butter and then do the bean setting a second time. They're tender, flavorful and have great juice😊
I cook my beans in the Insta pot also but being from the south we use fat back or bacon grease. I don’t use the beans setting i just cook them on high setting for 30-40 minutes and slow release. 😊
