Ahh, this was so good! I love the beat, and the lyrics throughout definitely resonate with me. They really capture how scary it is to put trust in people, and why I’m so cautious about that; you’re handing them the ability to hurt you more deeply and easily than they could otherwise, and you’re at their mercy to an extent.
And the scars relationships can leave you with-and not just romantic relationships; work and family and friendship ones, as well!-can last for many years and have wide-ranging effects.
Speaking of which…*OUCHHHHH,* that part about just being white noise and something for people to lean on and feed off of and then shut off when it’s convenient? The vocals were beautiful but GODDANG the lyrics hurt, lol, because I have *LIVED* that. It is an utterly devastating feeling and experience to do so much, give so much of yourself to people, and then have them not even value you in the end. To see and realize that no matter how hard you try, that doesn't necessarily mean you or it will ever be enough for them. To give your all and have it be treated as nothing.
And I have spent so much time and energy stifling my own voice in order not to rock the boat and not deal with the negative reactions and be classed as the mean one for not wanting to play along and toe the line. And in the end, I just suffer either way, for a bunch of folks who aren't worth suffering for! It always feels like a Catch-22, but these days I'm a little more likely to deal with the pain and uncertainty of taking the risks versus just stewing silently and indefinitely staying with _that_ variety of misery.
In any case, I think I managed to get off pretty lightly in the insecurities part mentioned in that same section (at least in terms of personal insecurities versus mistrust of other people), but I've had to actively fight for that to be the case. Even now I still have to fight at times not to let the way others treat and value or devalue me distort how I view my own worth and being and actions. I still get tempted to question and downplay it. Which is pretty freaking wild, honestly! How can you experience that much pain, that relentlessly, and still have your mind start whispering that may it wasn't actually _that_ bad or that wrong?
That's one reason I really like to have records of events and interactions and stuff. It makes it easier for me to allay those sorts of doubts.
I had a situation not too long ago where I was looking back over some texts with someone, and I was like, "Holy schitt…" because not only was it bad, it was actually even worse than I'd remembered it being. So that quite effectively shut down the niggling doubts I had about whether it was really so bad and whether my reactions (internal or external) were proportional.
And then other times I'll find positive stuff that's actually better than I recall, so that's a more pleasant thing to come across after the fact.
