    Great! Just had a lesson here in Malvern, England and was having trouble with this! I finally worked out that the shoulder that is coming BACK at you is the one to rise on! At first I thought I needed to look at the shoulder going forward but it doesn't seem to coincide with the rising motion. Your video shows this clearly. You can see the horse's inside shoulder coming back and 'pushing' the rider up out of the saddle - 1:08. That's how I think about it anyway! I couldn't see a leg going forward (in my lesson) or make any link between the correct shoulder going forward as a signal. The 'Should comes back and pushes you out of the saddle' works every time. Thanks again. Subscribed, LIked and Notified.

      @@ShadeTreeStables My pleasure! Just watched your video with my 8yr old daughter again. It's by far the clearest video on this on UA-cam. The whole family rides and this video has helped enormously. In the heat of a lesson it's quite hard to concentrate enough to get things right. Thanks again for going to the effort of doing this video - you've really made a difference! David

    Your video helped me understand the diagonal clearly. I see how the force is transmitted from the saddle to the ground once you sit down & front inside leg is forward (timestamp 1:02). Thanks.

    Hello! I know this video was posted a while ago, but I have a question. Is the inside leg of the horse towards the fence or the arena?

    • @ShadeTreeStables
      @ShadeTreeStables  Рік тому

      Technically the inside leg of the horse is the inside of the bend in the direction of travel, so in this case toward the middle of the arena, on the camera side. I hope that makes sense. Thanks for watching!

    • @ShadeTreeStables
      @ShadeTreeStables  Рік тому

      Yes! You are correct. So when going to the Right, you sit when the Right front is going forward, and to the Left, you sit when the Left front is forward. Thanks!

    This may be an odd question, but when going 'straight' what leg do rise or sit? I get the instructions going around a pen left or right, but with heading straight, what is best please? 🙏

    • @ShadeTreeStables
      @ShadeTreeStables  Рік тому +1

      If going straight, such as on a trail, it's best to switch occasionally as to not ride the whole time on one diagonal, but neither would be right or wrong.

    Great demonstration. I started lessons a couple of months ago and now the instructors are making me focus on getting these diagonals right. We use "rise with outside leg" instead, but I find it hard to see this from the saddle. I look down, but things are moving a little too fast to notice, and it's only when my instructor says "sit for 2!" that I realise I'm wrong. Any tips for this?

    • @ShadeTreeStables
      @ShadeTreeStables  2 роки тому +2

      Some people are able to feel it better than see it. Focus on that. When you're on the wrong one it will usually feel bumpy or like you're twisting, or that you bang down on the saddle. Good luck, you'll get it!

    • @usmanmajid7837
      @usmanmajid7837 2 роки тому +1

      @@ShadeTreeStables That's useful, thanks! I also have some other quirks to perfect, such as my bottom leg position (which currently tends to push forward) and my overall shoulders, arms, legs balance. It's hard to tell if my trot is bouncy because of my form, being on the wrong diagonal, or both!
      But yes you're right, when I'm on the correct diagonal I definitely do feel a much smoother trot.

    Is there a reason to watching the inside leg rather than the outside?

    • @ShadeTreeStables
      @ShadeTreeStables  2 роки тому +1

      Not at all. If you look at the outside front leg, it would just be the opposite, so back when you sit. When I was learning it, I always looked at the left leg whether it was inside or outside because my horse's mane hung on the right side and made it harder for me to see the shoulder movement.

    This was a great video except my brain works opposite how you trained...working on the outside leg when standing instead of sitting when the inside leg is forward you should be sitting. I am left handed, don't know if that makes a difference or just the way I am trained to learn.
