I really appreciate you making these repair vlogs. I’m hoping to start grabbing some “real” arcade cabinets at some point. Issues like what you’ve shown in this video have made me hesitant to take the plunge. Seeing this video makes me more confident I could *hopefully* tackle some of the more minor problems. Thanks for sharing!
Game Preserve NASA has had a California Speed in their shop for at least two years now. I hope they can get it running again. I enjoyed this game plenty as a kid.
I love these 90s midway racing games. I consider this a Midway, I think they owned Atari by this point anyway. Rush the Rock and Hydro Thunder are two others I've bought too.
Happy for you! I really enjoyed being an arcade manager from Namco when I was 24 at Cary town Center! I miss the arcade days and I remember seeing this game around it would be quite the blessing to have any of the sit down racing arcade games at home. I guess San Francisco Rush 2049 will always be special as it was super popular in my arcade and we had a twin seat until closing of the location. There are a lot of people that want that Mortal Kombat 4! Enjoy your blessing thanks for sharing the experience ✊🏆🎮
I’d love to get a Rush 2049 eventually, it was one i rarely got to play in arcades. I’ve been working on MK4 today. It’s almost done, as long as the CRT gets fixed.
Great video, appreciate having something to reference as I try to restore 2 of them from a non-functional state. Those conversion boards are probably the hardest part of the whole damn thing. No matter what resistor I use on the sync wire, I keep experiencing a slow white bloom effect to my monitors. Weird. Thanks for all the help!
I likewise did the outlet mounting inside the cabinet using the pre-existing monitor connection. For anyone else's reference, assuming you're using a standard US 2-socket plug outlet: - purple/yellow wire (neutral) connects to silver stud on outlet - green/yellow wire (ground) connects to green stud on outlet - purple wire (hot) connects to gold stud on outlet. Secure in place, verify voltage before connecting anything, but then you're off to the races.
Don't mean to keep replying to myself but wanted to make sure this information was available if anyone else stumbled across it... To rectify the slow white bloom effect, I ended up putting a 510 ohm resistor on the sync cable and wiring RGB directly to RGB. I then adjusted the RGB frequency using the dials on the conversion board itself. It takes some fine tuning but there is a perfect frequency where your picture, contrast, etc. will all snap back at once on-screen. Now my games are running 100%. Thanks!
GBS boards are known for being noisy. They work, they're cheap, and that's what they are built as. Look up Voultar's video on how to make a GBS Control. This will clean up the signal and lower the latency.
What size resister(s) did you use to get the video signal cleaned up. I just picked my own California Speed and the crt is toast too. Just ordered the new video output converter and I really appreciate your your help. Thanks in advance.
Nice partial resto-mod man! Looks great and fantastic work! Man I would love to buy it from you, but I'm in Arizona and......I don't have the space for it. lol I will just turn my Ridge Racer Arcade1up into my main racing cabinet with a PC or maybe the mod board that has 150 racing games preloaded. I can't remember what they call it. Anyway looking forward to your resto. on the MK4!
Thanks! I’m not sure what the mod is but that’s a good idea with limited space. MK4 is coming along! Just have the monitor situation left to figure out.
Wow. I wish more people do this with Lcd replacements. Using the original bezel!.... These Barcade owner need to take note. That way the could make there LCD cabs more authentic.... I hate stretched retro games...lol
I like that look a lot, it keeps it looking at least somewhat original. I think it would have totally filled the old bezel space If I’d used a 32 inch monitor. There’s only a few 32” screens that would fit in the space though.
The cabinet is almost identical to Rush 2049 Alcatraz. I wonder how difficult it would be to convert to this game if you got bored with rush. I know i can switch out to any of the other Rush releases with minimal work but not sure about this game?
It’s actually the same cabinet as Cruisin’ World. You could probably swap the guts though. You’d need all of the components since they’re probably not the same. The wheel and shifter might work.
27 inch. There are some cabs that can fit a few 32 inch models but just barely. I wanted to keep the original bezel and had a 27 inch I wasn’t using so I went with this one.
@@KillerArcadeGames I appreciate it brother. I have a few racers I may swap to lcds since I want to keep the tubes for fighters where the latency really really matters
Thanks Mike! I looked up the resistors I got and they were 510ohm. I now wonder if I should try the higher rating to see if it fixes the noise in the picture.
Probably my fault on this one, I was having extreme brightness blowout and the 510ohm was the fix along the R G B wires for me. Any higher it got darker, lower, too bright. For some reason the board was just outputting a blinding brightness. I did have a 5k ohm on the sync but I did remember testing the 510 and it was a similar result. But I’d trust Mike’s recommendation any day.
Hi Killer Arcade, I'm having some troubles with a converter from CGA to VGA I bought since some days ago. It's not working, we connect it but it doesn't show anything on the screen. Can you help me?
I’m not real familiar with these outside of the couple of times I’ve used them. Does the menu appear on screen? If you truly have no image the converter might be faulty. They’re not real high quality so you could have gotten a bad one. Other than that, i’d double check your arcade video signal wiring.
@@adidas1984x no it turns on when i flip the power switch. All Insignia TVs do that from what I can tell. It remembers the last power state. So if it was on when you cut power, it will automatically turn on when power is received again.
All them 3/4 scale Arcade 1UP replicas don't belong in the shedcade anyway especially the doubles of the real arcades so you got plenty of room for California Speed. Now you need to find you a Cruisin USA.
Yeah me too. I try and keep all of my games running on a hard drive, as they were originally designed. All of my other machines, outside of my Rush The Rock cab, have the original drives.

i am still trying to stay off of it as much as possible or at all now though but i realize that youtube is still probably much more better then it now anyway there are so very many scammers there on tick tock wanting for people to gift them or to give them gifts for money and all of that stuff
they should have really banned it in the first place they should ban all social media web sites really life would be so much more better again with out any of them at all
Sorry, but I can't stand switching from a CRT to a LCD. To my taste this is not a restoration, but a "cultural violation". Its like putting GPL inside old spider car. Sorry but It's a HUGE no for me 👎
I initially thought the CRT was a K7500 which has zero flybacks available for it right now, possibly for a long time/ever. I could have used a universal chassis but these medium resolution games look decent on an LCD. This wasn’t a decision I made lightly, I’d prefer to keep them CRT when possible. I ended up realizing the monitor was actually a U5000 which had parts available. I had just bought an MK4 with no monitor so that’s going in there. Restoration may not be the best word. I also needed to balance the amount spent to the worth of the machine. I don’t think anyone is going to pay over $1000 for this. I didn’t want to lose money on it.

I’m glad it was enjoyed. Putting this together took some time so hopefully it does well.
Like a classic car restoration, sometimes it becomes more a labor of love than a money making venture. I hope you are successful my friend.
True! I haven’t listed it yet. I think I’ll do alright with selling it. At the very least break even.
Cool. Love to watch restoration videos. Can't wait to see one about MK4.
MK4 is coming along, slowly. I hope it will be done soon.

That’s good to know, I’m not very impressed with them lol.
If it’s similar to a Cruis’n USA, the radio button was never originally wired to light up. I was also puzzled about this with my cabinet.
Oh that’s good to know. I couldn’t find anything about it online.
Thanks KAG!
