There are not many sci-fi love themes that truly sound as though they've come down from the stars. This one is a rare treasure, and probably my favorite of all such music.

I just watched the Director's Edition on Blu-Ray last week and this theme has been haunting me. It's so lush, so gorgeous, so pure in its Golden Era Hollywood romance and I am HERE FOR IT.

No matter whether you liked the film or not, this is without question one of Goldsmith's greatest scores. This piece is wonderful and displays the composer's superb writing for strings. The music for the Klingon attack at the film's beginning is another highlight of this magnificent achievement.
I like the film alot, it's my favorite of the trek films.

Wtf, I just now realized this was used for the Star Trek Voyager theme song!
@@80s_Boombox_Collector Voyager's theme was inspired by this but was different.
We used this as the processional for our wedding. Took a bit of 'splaining to my wife that I wanted to use Star Trek music, but it worked beautifully.
That's wonderful, Brian! I would have smiled broadly to have seen your processional. Only true fans would recognize it. Everyone else would just think it was a beautiful composition.

This. At 2:10 it goes from "the romance theme" to feeling much more about exploration - which really fits the movie as a whole.
This transcends sci-fi it movie music , it is so moving and deep it could be used as the love theme of any of the great dramas or love story flicks made from yesterday or today. Thank you Jerry Goldsmith

@@SergioHardasmal It depends, Jerry and John were two very different composers and two different people. Jerry was always more interested in the textural and timbral aspects of music whilst John Williams focused more on melody, Jerry has John beat when it comes to creating interesting sounds but Williams has a grasp of the orchestra and melody like no other, few modern mainstream film composers have the experience or training that Jerry and John had. John Williams was also a virtuoso Pianist in his youth, Goldsmith though no slouch in that regard can't play the way Williams can. But they were almost equals it's hard to say, I hold Jerry in the same league as Williams.
It's hard to beat John. His themes are unique.

I love how Jerry's rendering and beautiful theme for illa starts out on the piano! Very poietic and very moving, perfectly sets up the rest of the theme which is a lovely masterpiece!!!
I'd swear, Jerry Goldsmith was channeling Sergei Rachmaninoff when he wrote this. It has Rach's chops, his flair for orchestrating for strings (and NO ONE wrote for strings the way Rach did!). Of all the cuts on the soundtrack, this is the one I go for again and again.

Powerful and beautiful theme for illia by Jerry Goldsmith!!!! A theme that ive always been swept away by and one of the many memorable cues from Jerry's classic Star trek motion picture soundtrack!!!!

This is the result of hearing ilia’s theme, in complete, precise memory by Jerry Goldsmith in my lucid , but loud auditory dream. after many years of listening to it in complete silence especially while watching the entire Star Trek The Motion Picture just one month ago. What does it mean?

Pretty much reused by Goldsmith for the Voyager theme. An iconic soundtrack to be sure.

This was a bizarre movie because it felt like there was more score than movie. Lol.
It's probably Goldsmith's best score. He did a lot of heavy lifting for this movie, I think.

That would be Princess Leia ... and you're right. This has much the same sense and orchestral virtuosity as her theme.
