Seriously the 90s had some great underrated gem movies, this being one of them.

I'm sorry, 21st century generations, you will never get to appreciate the fantastic movie soundtrack compositions by Jerry Goldsmith that we had the privilege to witness in the 90s classics. The ending scene when they set Arthur's corpse ablaze and the corresponding music give me literal goosebumps every time I watch it.

90s is far too new to me. I was born in 2005 and I can take in the soundtrack only up to 1969 !

The ending was magnificent with Goldsmith's outstanding soundtrack playing as the knights stood with their swords raised (in the sign of the cross) near the shore line while they watch the moving pyre in which King Arthur's body resided float away into the sea.

I remember there being a big buzz around this movie at the time because it was partly filmed in my homeland of Wales. People back then joked that this Arthurian film was pure fantasy: "AS IF she would leave Sean Connery for Richard Gere."

@@alyssawoodman Many years ago I overheard two young girls talking about this movie. One had already seen it and was describing it to her friend. That little girl was so taken with the romance and chivalry depicted in the film that she could hardly contain herself. There is something about the Arthurian legends that resonates powerfully with us, in part I think because it depicts the way life should be, full of courage, honor, and romance.

Goldsmith was one of the old guard of film composers like Ennio Morricone and John Barry.
People seem to praise Hans Zimmer to the moon but most of his best work is done by collaboration, and much of his more recent work is just loud noise rather than music.

Sean Connery's pony-tail in 'Medicine Man' was inspired by Goldsmith's. There is a credit somewhere in the film's end credits about Goldsmith being a hair consultant. This is not a joke. Connery mentioned it around the time filming wrapped up.

This movie had a lot of problems (the costumes, for one thing, looked like something out of a rennaisance fair), but a few things really stood out.
    - Obviously, this soundtrack, frankly it deserved a more successful movie.
    - Sean Connery as Arthur gets three or four absolutely brilliant piece of dialogue "There is a peace that can be found only on the other side of war, and if that war should come, I will fight it!"
"A man who fears nothing is a man who loves nothing, and if a man loves nothing, what joy is there in his life? I may be wrong...."
-The bit in the finale when Arthur goes down on one knee, and you think he is going to surrender, and suddenly he jumps up and cries "Fight!" took me completely by surprise as a child, and it is still awesome now.
    - Ben Cross totally chews the scenery as Malagant. Clearly just having the time of his life!

Let's also not forget Julia Ormond's acting. She infused the film with flawless acting, herself. I felt everything through her, through and through. Incredible

Bro, I couldn't agree more with you, you listed a lot of things where I have the same opinion.
I also loved it when I was 13 at my Birthday, the Music at 3:25 when Lancelot rides with Guinevere is an incredibly beautiful theme.
The Action of Goldsmith is straight, powerful. He is my favourite of the "big four" (Barry, Goldsmith, Morricone, Williams) of filmmusic.
No one could score more Genres you know, I would have love to hear HIS Lord of the Rings 😂🥲 f.a..
You know, I love the Lord of the Rings Trilogy and Howard Shore was very lyrical, a very intelligent, monumental Score, the extended Version of the Score is really awesome.
I love John Williams, is he the best of them all? I can't say, but Howard Shore had to win against the first Harry Potter, there is no doubt. Not easy to explain, I just think the Music should have had more blood, the harmonies of Shore just don't get me sometimes, Goldsmith is very special at that point and First Knight has so many good tracks, themes. I love to use it for Skyrim f.a.
      Example:
The Urukhai Theme (?), powerful at when the camera goes down the Orthanc to the 'Mines of Isengard' is good with the Metal Hammer Part in the Music from smithing and the "deep horns" (Dadadaaa...dadadam)
      Then:
      Goldsmith, 13th Warrior, Viking Heads
      The "Deep Horns"
      Dadam..daaadam..dadadada(fast😂) then again.
At least when I compare it I think at Viking Heads: woh woh woh, this is something different. But the Music of Shore, I really love it and respect it. Goldsmith, I just love the man, it's sad he could not live longer, he had much more to say. If there is a heaven I hope he is there with Jimi, Bruce Lee, Kobe and my other heros.

Gosh, I loved this movie! I know it's considered a "bad movie" but I always enjoyed it as a real-world version of the Arthurian legend. Excalibur will always be my favorite though. The soundtrack however is a MASTERPIECE! But should we expect anything less from the always fantastic maestro Goldsmith?

The score is beautiful and perfectly suited to the story. As others here say, "the final scene gives me goosebumps." About this being a "bad" movie. Nonsense. It was a time when critics were hard on handsome actors. "They" pretended to hate Troy in the same era with Brad Pitt perfectly cast as Achilles.

Another request, another knight-movie (last weeks one was "Excalibur"), another story around the myth of King Arthur. Finding this picture not too exciting as Excalibur, this one has surely some memorable moments. What stays is the score, composed by the great Jerry Goldsmith. Jerry certainly has given his best, you will hear. A fantastic score for a good movie. Enjoy!

Gere was miss-cast, but he does genuinely try during the film. He's older than the part was obviously written for and he's too modern a personality. I still like his quiet scenes and when he is playing conflicted.

I have always considered this a fluff movie compared to, say, Excalibur.
But the soundtrack came up on the automated playlist following
    Robin Hood Prince Of Thieves.
Blimey. Was I blown out of the water. This is glorious. Comparable in parts to the Conan The Barbarian soundtrack.

25 years ago, we were hoping for another 'The Wind And The Lion' from Goldsmith. 'First Knight' didn't meet that expectation, but it is one of Goldsmith's best 1990's scores. Goldsmith had adapted his scoring techniques after 'Total Recall' to fit more with the studio mandates about film music at that time. And an English legend is more somber and subdued than a Morocco based adventure story. Also, Goldsmith had one month to compose and record the entire score. I still love hearing music like this that looks back with respect to composers like Alfred Newman.

Firstly, First Knight is one of my all-time favourite movies and a go-to at any time. Secondly, I've never seen Out of Africa (shocker!) BUT there is a chord early in the Theme from Out of Africa by John Barry, which sounds remarkably like the opening chords of The Kiss. Has anyone else noticed, and is there a reason, e.g. did they work together at some point, or is it just happenstance?
