The infamous song “Mrs. Robinson” by Simon & Garfunkel is the unofficial anthem of an extramarital affair. It’s the unofficial anthem of the older woman. It’s the harmony-driven song of the sultry suburban tryst. It’s also one of the greatest American pieces of music of the 20th Century.!
This song was written for the film “The Graduate” (Dustin Hoffman’s breakout role) - and the song will feel deeper and more layered after you’ve seen the movie, which I highly suggest. It’s a cinema classic!
No, the song was written before the movie. It was originally titled Mrs. Roosevelt, after former First Lady Elenor Roosevelt. When S&G were contracted to write songs for the film, they changed the title to Mrs. Robinson to fit the film.
Paul Simon and Art Garfunkle; "Bridge Over Trouble Water", "Sound of Silence" "The Boxer""I Am a rock", "Homeward Bound" just a few. Used in the movie the Graduate, Mrs. Robinson was having an affair with a College Graduate....
Paul Simon wrote all the music, they sold over 100 million records - very successful duo. Paul has some great solo music, he is a very underrated acoustic guitarist, his song Kodachrome is fantastic.

I'm not real partial to Opera mostly foreign languages but "Unchained Melody" by the Righteous Brothers seems Operatic to me and I love that. So it may only be the language difference holding mme back.
the song “Mrs. Robinson” was actually written in reference to Eleanor Roosevelt, who served as First Lady of the United States for a record 12 years (1933-1945). She was First Lady throughout major events such as the Great Depression and World War II - and was highly-regarded for her contributions to the Presidency. In fact the song was originally entitled “Mrs. Roosevelt”, with Simon & Garfunkel changing the name to “Mrs. Robinson” in order to make it applicable to the movie it was featured in, The Graduate (1967). As such, the character featured in the song and the one portrayed in the movie have little, if anything, in common.
I don't know that the characters of the song and the movie have as little in common as all that. The last verse and chorus speak to an empty suburban existence and a longing for an idealized past. The middle verse is about an unmentionable secret, which could easily be interpreted as her affair with her friends' son. And the first verse implies her first day in some sort of mental hospital, which I infer could've been the result of a nervous breakdown following the events of the film. The song, for me, paints the internal life of Mrs. Robinson, her private thoughts, fears, and regrets which we're not privy to in the film.
Paul Simon eventually went solo. "You Can Call Me Al" is a really fun song, and the video is silly and fun to watch - Chevy Chase (A Saturday Night Live alum and comedian/actor) joins Paul in the video for shenanigans.

This song was written for the movie “The Graduate”.....the meaning of this song has been highly debated for years. It was said that the song represents the dilemmas society, as a whole, was living in the late 60’s. You guys should watch the movie. Simon and Garfunkel were one of the best selling music groups of the the 60’s. Personally, I thinks that’s debatable.....I believe it had to a lot longer than that. Some of their biggest songs were “The Sound of Slilence” of course “Mrs. Robinson” “ The Boxer” and the one I considered to be one of the greatest songs ever written. “Bridge over Troubled Water.”

When I first learned about reaction videos, I thot, "really?", that sounds lame, but then I watched several and realized that these people were broadening their musical experience and appreciation. I saw one 35-year old who said he had only listened to hip hop, but because of his viewers he was exposed to The Doors, Led Zeppelin, others have listened to Dean Martin, still others Mozart. Reaction videos expand everyone's musical exposure!
@@SC-gp7kt I loved the original but the Disturbed cover is off the chart - his voice is made for - yes I would even say do them back to back in the same reaction
Always loved the original more. I like the darker sound that Disturbed used. And i can clearly see and hear why people like it. However they also used audiotune, not to correct the singers pitch cause the man can sing, but for the effect it gives on the parts, where he sings high notes. And it turns me off immediately.
Simon and Garfunkel’s Sound of Silence was a warning about what we are doing to our environment and to each other. Disturbed racked it up to a condemnation for the fools we have been for not listening to the warning. Both are brilliant!
One of the great acts of the 60’s. Paul Simon went on to have a great solo career. Check out his album Graceland, with musicians from South Africa, a classic! Simon was the songwriter. Art Garfunkel has an amazing voice. Their harmonies are remarkable.
Way back when, the 2 most discussed questions musically were A) when are the Beatles getting back together and B) when is Simon and Garfunkle getting back together. We keep telling you that we didn't really hear genres back then. Most radio stations play a variety of music. It had show tunes, swing, jazz, opera, polka, country and gospel all during the day.
This song was originally about Eleanor Roosevelt, but was then re-written to be the theme song for "The Graduate" (which is about Dustin Hoffman having an affair with his parents' friend, Mrs. Robinson)

To fully understand the lyrics you need to watch the film "The Graduate". A very young Dustin Hoffman and Ann Bancroft. Paul and Art did several of the movie's songs. They were in a class by themselves.
You can't beat their great harmonizing and Paul Simon's genius guitar playing. Paul Simon, the dark-haired guy, Art Garfunkel, the tall, lighter haired guy. This song was HUGE in the 70's and you can see why. Please check out their "Song of Silence" - the original version of that song because others have done covers (Disturbed and Pentatonix). Their other great songs people have listed below. Great reaction guys!
Once you start stepping out of your comfort zone and exploring, you'll be amazed at how much is out there, especially if you search without regard for what the music is called or when it was made. There is more there than any one person could ever hear in their lifetime...

The reason you guys are successful is that you both are humble and honest.
More More MORE! Paul Simon also had a great solo career!
You guys have to do some more Paul Simon. “Late in the Evening,” “ 50 ways to leave your lover”, and “You can call me Al”.would all be good choices.
I totally agree with everything you wrote.
Give "Three Dog Night" a listen you might like them late 60s early 70s "Jerimiah was a Bullfrog" is a classic. Oh the 70s were so much fun as a teenager. Also America A Horse with no name is a another classic
Its Called Joy to the World By Three dog Night ,,From 1971 ;A Very big hit FOR 3 Dog Night PLEASE Rob Squad,
Here’s another Three Dog Night recommendation that I’m sure you’ll both like. The song’s called
Easy To Be Hard. You guys are doing a great job!
Love the Rob Squad! You guys just make me happy.
It's great how your tastes in music change when you listen to something outside of your lane.
Watching someone's mind open and expand before your eyes is a beautiful thing. You're growing up, bro
This is one of the songs from the soundtrack of a generation... the generation that ya'll love. They used it in the full soundtrack they did for a seminal movie of that generation, The Graduate.
They were considered Folk Rock..so much talent!
Great acoustics and vocals they were a great duo all great songs from them
Oddly discussing cartoons.Simon and Garfunkel, earlier in their career went by Tom and Jerry.
Bridge over Trouble Water is a MUST too:)
Check out some of Paul Simon's solo work: "Me and Julio down by the schoolyard", "You can call me Al", "50 ways to leave your lover".
Jolting Joe has left and gone away. Another time. Beautiful lyrics...
Check out Cat Stevens- “The Wind”, “Wild World”, ……they’ll speak to your soul!
Cats in the Cradle is a Harry Chapin song.
Cat Stevens - completely unique and well worth listening to various songs...
PLEASE try Paul Simon's great song "Mother and Child Reunion" you'll both love it.
Paul Simon got the idea from eating a chicken and egg salad sandwich. For real.
@@ediefolta9494 Love it! Thanks!
Next up, Paul Simon and Chevy Chase, "YOU CAN CALL ME AL".
I love that video.
Simon and Garfunkel, Bridge Over Troubled Water, a song you need to hear, trust me.
The band Disturbed did a cover of Simon and Garfunkel’s “The Sound of Silence.” Listen to S&G’s first and then Disturbed’s cover. Blow your mind.
I have never liked this song ever!! But the cover is stunning and I love it!
@@SC-gp7kt I loved the original but the Disturbed cover is off the chart - his voice is made for - yes I would even say do them back to back in the same reaction
I was going to suggest the same thing, glad I read your post 1st, both are amazing.
Lady Black Mamboza…Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes
@@kwillette1701 yea, definitely😀
Starting to fall for melodic music with great (understandable) lyrics doesn’t make you soft, Jordan! 😁 Keep up the good work, Amber! 😉
Still gota say I really think you will like Al Stewart "Year of the cat".
Absolutely!
Their names are Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel... What's going on? You're learning to appreciate the broad spectrum of awesome music... Cheers!
Thanks to you guys too. It's fun watching you broaden your musical tastes.
Art Garfunkel's voice is so ethereal 🙌
This song was originally about Eleanor Roosevelt, but was then re-written to be the theme song for "The Graduate" (which is about Dustin Hoffman having an affair with his parents' friend, Mrs. Robinson)
scanned the reply's to see if anyone mentioned this....
You guys rock. I must confess sometimes it's odd that a famous song is something you haven''t heard, but it's great to see you light up when you hear a classic for the first time.
OMG Was this your first time hearing Simon and Garfunkel??????!!!! Glad to see your reactions from the start to now.
This was my favorite song when I was a little girl. I would dance around my room for hours! Of course I had no idea what it was about or what The Graduate was about 🤣
Thank you for this channel and bringing back great music from every era of my life! I just found you two days ago and I am hooked!
Watch “The Graduate” tremendous Simon & Garfunkel soundtrack.
Edgar and Johnny Winters version of tobacco road live from 1970 please
True dat

Yes please
Paul Simon's "50 Ways To Leave Your Lover" is classic.
Welcome to the world of Art Garfunkel & Paul Simon two of the greatest folk male voices that the music industry has ever seen or created. Harmony geniuses of the 60 & 70 era that "BALLADS" from life experiences of love, drama & even sadness. Thank you BOTH for playing music of my life time that I still listen today & just very happy & proud that you wonderful folks have this musical channel to reflect & inspire!
Some talent is so undeniable that it can transcend all boundaries including your musical taste. Great reaction!! :-)
Y’all need to listen to their song “the Sound of Silence” and then the cover by Disturbed.
To see a younger generation enjoying the folk music my parents listened to and I enjoyed, is priceless! It's so refreshing to see your generarion broaden their exposure to different sounds. Great reaction!
To fully understand the lyrics you need to watch the film "The Graduate". A very young Dustin Hoffman and Ann Bancroft. Paul and Art did several of the movie's songs. They were in a class by themselves.
Love your tee-shirt Amber!! Keep on rocking
Even death metal fans like Simon and Garfunkel. It's universal. They are one of few artists that I could agree with my parents about.
Just discovered you two last night and I immediately subscribed. I love your vibe and authenticity!
J, your musical growth will be spiritual too. The music of my youth is all 80s and 90s, rock,, rap and freestyle. I never thought I'd be a country fan and here I am listening to George, Alan, Brett and such.🤣 You'll be a wiser man as you appreciate each genre.
It's absolutely cool to like many different genres of music. Screaming heavy metal, raw punk rock, folk, blues, old rock & roll, Beethoven, it doesn't matter as long as it's good.
