    The dieline is actually intended to be stitched FIRST on your applique fabric. This allows you to cut the fabric exactly to fit. THEN you stitch the actual design file. Your process is backwards from the designers intentions (see embroidery library for more information). When placing a piece of fabric that is already embroidered, the pull probably won't allow it to fit. Also, you don't want to cut your satin stitches.

      I see what you are referring to, and realize there are several ways to do applique. I agree that doing it the other way around would make it much easier to cut out the design, and I appreciate your information. Thanks for your comment. :)

    Thanks for another great tutorial. I've still not done an applique yet.
    The Brother SE-400 is the best sewing machine I've used yet (and I've used many). It has EVERYTHING a person would need. I like the needle threader (it's better than their regular sewing machines). It cuts the thread. It sews very well and quietly. And, it is also an embroidery machine.
    I had one for about a month, but decided I needed a bigger stitch area and got a brother PE-770. I like it, too.

    There is no need to hoop the first fabric. Simply hoop your lower material with or without backing. Apply adhesive, spray or iron on, to the red (applique) fabric and center it on the base fabric. Stitch the outline, then trim the applique fabric close to the outline. Then continue applying the embroidery stitches to seal the edges. It reduces the likelihood of missing the applique fabric by misalignment. We do hundreds of applique's per year in the shop using this method.

  • @KnotsKneedles
    @KnotsKneedles  11 років тому

    That's correct, it will only embroider within a 4x4 space. A large hoop would allow you to realign your design and connect it with another design or repeat a design. I have not tried this technique, but I guess it can be done. I just stick with my 4x4 hoop. :)

  • @KnotsKneedles
    @KnotsKneedles  11 років тому

    You can certainly try it that way. This is the only way I have done it, so I can't tell you if your way would work. The die line is for placement of your design. And if you are creating an applique out of one fabric and stitching it another you need to create the applique on your stabilizer, and the die line on the other fabric guides your placement. Let me know if you try it the other way and if works. Thanks for visiting us. :)

    So basically mark the center of the heart design- put your needle there and then hit go and it will move the outline just like with embroidery. It seems you have to be pretty exact to the center of the design for the final stitching to get done in the outline shape.

    I have the SE-400 and I'm still learning how to use the embroidery. Can you tell me if I have to remove the hoop to change the bobbin when it states to change thread color?

    • @KnotsKneedles
      @KnotsKneedles  10 років тому +1

      Yes, you need to remove the hoop when changing thread colors in the bobbin, unless you are embroidering a design that uses the white embroidery thread in the bobbin. You only change the bobbin color when the design needs to be finished looking on both top and underside. For instance if you are embroidering a wall hanging, you would just use your white embroidery thread (it comes with the machine) If you are doing free standing lace you need to change the bobbin thread. I hope this is helpful. :)

    Hi! I really enjoyed this tutorial! So far the only one that I understand! l do Have a few questions about the machine settings and the design files..
    1. I have a Brother LB-6800, It doesn't seem to recognize different stages of the stitching… It doesn't stop stitching or anything.. Is this depending on where the purchased file is from and what is included??
    2. Do you change the settings on your machine to "Applique" ?? My manual says to do this and gives instructions, but I can't find the "Applique" option!
    Thank you again, and you have been a great help!! :)

      My machine is a Brother SE 400, and it can read the embroidery files if there are stopping points in the file. I'm sorry but I'm not at all familiar with the machine that you are using, and unable to offer any advice. Maybe Brother Support could be of some help.

    I have another question. Based on my practice run last night, the bobbin was white, the top pink. if I am doing a job that has multiple colors, how to I do that to be sure the top color comes out correctly? Does that make sence?

  • @KnotsKneedles
    @KnotsKneedles  11 років тому

    The stitching always starts in the middle of the hoop, unless you adjust to the left, right, up or down. You can mark where you want the design to be on your fabric and then line the fabric up in the hoop, using the grid that came with the machine. I hope this helps.

    Im a noob to embriodery, havent even started it, but im wanting to do a layered fabric applique, is it basically the same technique?

    • @KnotsKneedles
      @KnotsKneedles  10 років тому

      Unfortunately, the way shown is not the only way to create an applique. You can see how I did a double layer flower, in our video titled "How to sew a simple flower applique." Also, if you purchase an embroidery applique design, usually they include instructions for stitching the designs. I hope this helps, and best wishes with your new embroidery ventures! :)

      Jacqueline Wilson My machine, a Brother SE 400 also uses a 4x4 sewing area, so no matter what size hoop you use, it is only capable of sewing in that 4x4 area.

    • @KnotsKneedles
      @KnotsKneedles  10 років тому +1

      It doesn't look like the Innovis 50 is an embroidery sewing machine. If you want to begin doing machine embroidery, the SE 400 is a great entry level embroidery sewing machine, and has a lot to offer at an affordable price.

    • @sewingmira4

      You don't need a program to applique, but if you are doing applique on an embroidery machine, in the hoop, you would need an embroidery applique design.

  • @smithsne

    Is the machine limited to a 4x4 design or is it the hoop that comes with the machine? I purchased the SE 400 and also ordered a larger hoop that says it fits the SE400. If I understand you correctly, even if I had the larger hoop attached, the SE400 will not do designs larger than 4x4?

    How can I find a DL PES file? I have my applique files all as PES, I can't find anywhere to convert to DL PES, will the se 400 automatically have that option once I load the PES file? I loved your video and how you explained it but can't figure out the file part. Thank you for your time !

    • @KnotsKneedles
      @KnotsKneedles  10 років тому

      In the hoop designs for applique, usually come with 2 files. One is the PES stitch out design, and the other is the DL or dieline for applique placement. The machine will not alter or change file formats.

      No, and you can't embroidery a baseball cap with the brother SE400, as far as I know. It takes a special type of embroidery hoop, but you can probably research that a little more online yourself. I'm sure there are people doing it on other machines.

    So if you are using heavy fabrics, like fleece, you would use a lighter stabilizer? What if you are making a blanket, how do you do it then, all the tutorials I see are on small pieces of fabric

    • @KnotsKneedles
      @KnotsKneedles  10 років тому

      Mona, I have not tried this on a blanket, but I would think that you would just do the applique wherever you wanted it on the blanket, and just hoop that section. Also, as far as the stabilizer, you would still use the stabilizer to create the applique, but not necessarily on the blanket fabric that you are going to apply the applique to, if it is a heavier fabric. Does that make sense? I hope this helps, and thanks for visiting us.

    From what I understand about the Octi Hoops is that they are meant to be used for free motion embroidery, and sewing without a presser foot, so I don't see any reason why you couldn't use it on the Brother SE 400. I personally have not had any experience with the Octo Hoop. Thanks for visiting TLC Inspirations UA-cam Channel.

      ***** Well I still have not set it up, I'm still checking to make sure everything is there. I need to make a couple of crib sheets for my great grandson and everytime I get fabric from Joanns I end up ruining it trying to straighten it. By the time I get it straight It's too narrow. so far I'm 3 to 0 on my trys. I dont know how to straighten the fabric without trimming it, trimming it makes it too narrow. Joanns rips the fabric instead of cutting it and thats the problem, plus when I wash it it shrinks 3 inches. So now I have a 40 inch piece of fabriic when I need a 45 inch or the least 42. At 7.99 a yard I'm getting madder by the minute. I am not buying from them anymore. i want to embroidery his name on it if I ever get it done. I'm totally confused after reading all the instructions just to thread it is 18 steps. A bit much I think.

      I'm not familiar with that model sewing or embroidery machine, and I'm not sure why your needle would break. Maybe try a different brand, and make sure it is inserted properly, with the flat side of the needle shank faced away from you when inserting.

    @brendatroyer5141 10 років тому

    I think you should learn to properly applique with an embroidery machine before you post a tutorial. This is a very clumsy and awkward way to do it.
    You only need to hoop the blue background fabric, stitch out the placement line, which shows you where to lay a small piece of red fabric, then let it do the tack down stitch. Then take the hoop off the machine and trim the red fabric right around the tack down stitch, put the hoop back on machine and do the final satin stitch and any embroidery.
