  • First things first, here's the tab!

    So another video where I didn't really feel like writing a detailed description. But the song features a few techniques and "playing philosophies" that would benefit from more detailed explanations. But first, why the video and why now?
    Well, I saw Dying Fetus live in Schweinfurt last week and I'm always positively suprised when I see them. Truly magnificient live band. I saw their soundcheck and was a bit let down by the guitar tone there, but in the band context it was perfect. The Dying Fetus guitar tone was always that kind of tone I couldn't really replicate with the Axe Fx. There's a certain solid state amp character in there, that I just couldn't get out of my Axe Fx. So I was surprised to see that they used a regular Peavey (5150, 6505 or whatever EVH, you know what I mean). Don't know what else John used, except for that noise gate and probably a tubescreamer. Btw, great use of a noise gate. Every break in the music was perfectly executed. Only thing that annoyed the shit out of me was the mosh pit haha
    This is the first time I used the tone match feature of the Axe Fx for a video. I actually used it first to replicate the tone for Defeated Sanity's "Passages Into Deformity" album. That was also that kind of solid state tone that I just couldn't copy. And I was positively suprised again. It just works! So I had to try it for the Dying Fetus tone too. It's super close but there is still some high end sizzle in there that I don't like which I cut a bit. I also boosted the mids slightly, it's a playthrough after all, so my guitar can stick out a bit more. That's it tone wise!
    Now to the playing. Let's talk about the tremolo picking first. I'm usually someone who obsessively tries to stick to strict 16th notes when it comes to those parts. But there are certain bands where the tremolo picking takes the lazy approach as soon as it hits a very high tempo. And Dying Fetus are one of those bands. Since the tremolo picking is open and not palm-muted you can get away with that kind of floaty playing, where you just play fast instead of strict note values. The drums are basically carrying those parts. If 16th notes are too strenuous I usually stick to 8th triplets. Except for the case when you have four 16th notes each string. Then I try to stick to that since the string change and up-down-stroke distribution is a lot more even. (With three notes a string you either have to use some economic kind of picking or play, down-up-down, string change, then up-down-up which also takes out the conistency). So this is one of the very few videos where you see me taking the lazy approach. I try to avoid that for videos. It's something more reserved for live situations haha. (Btw, no one plays those high tempos this strict in a live situation! You can thank me later.)
    And now to the shred parts, the most important parts of the description. It's very hard to accurately write those out for the tab. When I write tabs I opt for clarity and readability even if it means that the tab is not 100% accurate. In my opinion it's easier to understand and play a part when you come from a very tight and strict playing and then add some feeling (that rhythmic floating) versus trying to understand an ugly ass tab. A tab with accurate rhythm notation would be more confusing in this case. I basically see it as a rhythmic ornamentation. It's something I learned from playing with Defeated Sanity because they have that a lot.
    All the shred parts are fairly accurate in terms of notes, it's just the rhythm that you have to get a feel for from the record. The first shred part, the alternate picking thing with groupings of six, is slighty rushed and then dragged on the highest note on each grouping. That's the best description I have for it.
    The sweep part is a bit harder to explain. The way I notated the tapped part of it is pretty accurate. The tab basically features the "perfect" robotic-like version of the sweep. So strict note values with a full 5 string sweep. On the record only a three string sweep is audible and that's what they do live as well. I personally play a four string sweep because it's the best compromise between conistency and playability + cleanliness. I included my version at the end of the tab so you can understand it better.
    And now the part after that, that diminished thing. This one is really hard to notate. The first minor third is basically a flurry and you kind of linger on the lowest note on the E string a bit. So imagine the tab with the conistent sixtuplets but instead you kind of rush the first three notes and then stay a bit on the lowest note on the E string. Those are your rhythmic accents!
    Enjoy the video!

    I recorded this twice! I had two mistakes in the first video. One was an open note which I played palm muted (I know, nitpicky) and the other one was that slided pinch harmonic in the last section. Only after filming I figured that I had the wrong notes, because my playing was clashing with the original. Yeah it's not 3rd to 2nd fret, which played in that first video, but actually 2nd fret to 1st fret, with a higher kind of pinch harmonic. Very hard to hear sometimes. But it did not leave my mind yesterday, so I checked and noticed my mistake, and then I just had to re-record it haha

    As a huge Dying fetus, I can only love watching you play this cover. Awesome dude !
    PS: For John's live guitar sound, I learned for fact that they use 2 mics on a cab (57 + 421)
    doubled tracks are then delayed (like 20ms) and hardpanned.
    He used to play an Ampeg VH140C with marshall cab. When i saw them like 10 years ago i remembered seeing a 5150 + a Mesa. As for the cabs i can't remember if it was an orange + mesa or just Mesas.
    Now I think he uses evh with engl.

    Awesome video Kevin. Indeed that band is really impressive live. I wondered if it would be even better live soundwise with a second guitarist playing as tight as them. Now they know who to call if they wanna try it one day, hehe.
    Speaking tone and non-muted tremolo picking, I found that in this genre it's difficult to get a tone that is compatible with precise playing, articulate attacks and at the same time allows for "non 16th / iso-drums" tremolo picked riffs to sound homogeneous. If your attack is too noticeable, the tremolo picking parts will sound too robotic and not "brutal" anymore (for lack of better words).

      Yeah I checked the last 5 albums for potential cover songs and I actually didn't find that many that were suitable for a cool video. They do have a lot of filler riffs, you know? Those riffs that are cool in a live situation and for listening but not that interesting for a video. I was looking for super-shred stuff basically haha. So the other two songs that I thought about were Ethos of Coercion, also from Descend Into Depravity, and Homicidal Retribution from War Of Attrition.

    Man, I have the same "issue" when it comes to tremolo picked parts. I've always tried to play them as 16ths, but obviously at certain tempos it's not doable (at least for me). I'm starting to think that as long as you land those note changes on the beat and the motion is consistent, it's no big deal - so thanks for the validation haha. That's what kept me from playing more extreme stuff.
    I'm also having a bit of a mentality shift when it comes to lead/shred parts - I've noticed that a lot of the stuff I love has that "floaty/hard to notate" component. Think Yngwie or Marty Friedman. They are in no way grid-perfect when they go fast, but they usually start & land their phrases on beat and everything works. So currently I'm working backwards, trying to add more "floatyness" to the rigid licks I construct. This stuff goes deep haha.
    As always, sick cover!

    "Btw, no one plays those high tempos this strict in a live situation! You can thank me later." - What sort of tempo threshold would you say we are talking about? (16th notes)

    • @KevinHeiderich
      @KevinHeiderich  2 роки тому +1

      There is no easy answer to this. It depends on the (sub)genre and is also highly individual depending on the player. Most metal music that has tight 16th note tremolo picking is between 180-220bpm and that's also the tempo I think every (good) metal should be able to play.
      For example, the classic downpicking quality standard is still Master Of Puppets which is 8th notes at 210bpm. And since downpicking and tremolo picking go hand in hand you should be able to play this tempo with tremolo picking and 16th notes. And you shouldn't stop there. There's plenty of old-school thrash metal that is faster than that (old kreator, sodom, sepultura and stuff). But I'd say at 220bpm and faster it gets a bit loose with who plays strict notes and who doesn't.
      So yeah, try to develop tight and accurate picking, both downpicking and tremolo picking up until 220bpm. Everything after that is kinda optional. It's not the end but for a regular metal player it's definitely enough. Only more extreme metal subgenres are faster than 220/230bpm. But it doesn't apply to every genre. For example, black metal is actually pretty fast in a lot of songs, but the guitar players are super lazy in that genre and seldomly play those values. It's the drummers that do all the work. And this also applies to other bands of different subgenres. Death and Thrash metal is generally super tight and only get's sloppy after 220bpm. That's where I pulled that number. A lot of tech bands for example also use "lazy" tremolo picking when they play super fast, so some traditional metal stuff is actually harder to play in that sense. One of the tightest picking bands I know is Psycroptic. They play everything very strictly.
      Something I've seen a few "newer" bands doing is actually not playing any tremolo picking at all. Thy Art Is Murder have a lot of parts that would be played with tremolo picking in a more traditional setting but they instead play 8th notes with regular alternate picking. I'm not a fan of it but it is probably a lot cleaner in the production.
      If you're interested in how I personally see it: always practice strict values, never settle for laziness in a practice environment. That's it! Which means I also practiced downpicking and tremolo picking up to 240bpm and beyond. But it's not super practical and it's not something you do in long bursts either, so be aware of that.

    That was awesome. I have a slightly off topic question for you. I sit exactly the same as you do when playing, I have played like that for like 12 years. I'm noticing that I'm getting back pain (especially around the middle of my back) when I play though. I can't really play for more than 5 to 10 minutes these days without getting uncomfortable. I find sitting up as straight as I can kind of helps but not for long. Do you have any tips for this? Especially with the one leg raised I get lower back pain as well. I've really been trying to grind guitar lately as I want to finally start posting videos and tighten up my playing as much as possible, but it's very difficult to want to play in pain.

    • @KevinHeiderich
      @KevinHeiderich  2 роки тому +3

      I usually try to stay away from health-related advice, so I'd rather give no advice than bad advice. I don't have the best posture while playing the guitar either. I also tend to slouch more the longer I play. But I don't really have any issues with back pain while playing. My les paul is less comfortable and I notice that my hips are kind of twisting in one direction with that guitar. It's not the most ergonomic body form for classical position. Still, the amount of discomfort is managable. So when I do have issues with my middle to lower back then it's usually from something else, which I then also notice when sitting down with the guitar. So my suggestion would be to look at your lifestyle. What's your dayjob? Are you sitting all day? Do you work on having an upright and good posture? Do you exercise to improve your lower back and core muscles? These are suggestions and things that can improve your back issues. I personally don't think playing the guitar should cause any severe issues, it's probably from something else and those issues get amplified when you play the guitar. But again, I'm not really qualified for this kind of thing. What I did experience in the past were a pinched nerve and some inflammation exactly where you have issues. Those also caused some discomfort while playing in this position, exactly like you described. But I did get those issues from lifting weights with improper form. So again, I do think these issues come from somewhere else. I hope this helps and you get well :)
      Oh by the way, I always had dayjobs where I had to stand all day. But now I have one where I can choose to sit or to stand. And I noticed it's a lot better for me to do my work while standing, because all my hobbies at home are sitting hobbies. And I did notice that this also makes back issues worse, sitting all day. And my ass also can't do it haha
