Orange amplifiers have long attracted the worship of high gain freaks. Yes, the amps’ show-stealing visuals make them objects of desire among a wide cross section of players (not to mention great stage dressing), but it’s the massive, gooey crunch that keeps heavy players crawling to Orange like ants to the sugar jar.
In 2003 Orange launched their Rockerverb series-versatile dual-channel heads with reverb and effect loops. The third incarnation, reviewed here, is the 50-watt Rockerverb MKIII, a muscular mid-powered head with improved reverb and scalable power.
    Orange On Orange
The Rockerverb is about the same size as most full-sized Orange heads (21.65" x 10.63" x 11.02") and weighs in just shy of 46 lbs. (20.75 kg). The face is adorned with the no-text graphic labels that Orange introduced in the ’70s. These icons can be confusing for the uninitiated, but they’re intuitive enough once you learn their functions.
A 12AT7/ECC81 tube and a custom transformer drive the improved reverb circuit. Another new feature is a built-in attenuator located after the master volume, providing additional control over how the Rockerverb distorts after the preamp stage. It’s a handy feature for playing at home or on smaller stages, helping retain the push/pull dynamic of high-end gain at lower levels. You can also halve the power to 25 watts via a faceplate switch.

It's interesting how great the Orange sounds with the Mesa cab. I would expect that the cab would compromise the orangeness of the amp. It still sounds like an Orange just a touch less aggressive and bassy, but a touch smoother with a bit stronger lower mids. John you are great player BTW. I am big fun!

This is an awesome amp that is very versatile. Orange amps aren't typically known for the best clean and just on the verge of breakup tones, but the new Rockerverb does a great job with it. And the dirty channel just sounds incredible -- even with the gain set high, it does not fizz out.
I find it odd that Orange nixed the 3-band EQ on the clean channel from the MKII and went back to the original Rockerverb's 2-band EQ. I think they should have added a mid EQ knob with a switch to take it in and out of the circuit. That way we could choose between the original 2-band EQ and the MKII's 3-band EQ depending on our preferences.

As a prior owner of a rockerverb, never understood the draw of these amps. Unless the gain is at 10, they sound flat and overly compressed. At 10, I can't tell how they sound better than another amp with some nice OD/fuzz pedals in front. Unless you're playing lead like all the time, I feel like a vox or a fender with some decent stomp boxes is way more cost effective.

I'm a big John Bolenger & PG fan. I've watched a million of his videos. His demos are great! But, for my two cents - during the demo, this amp never sounded good. The speakers used seem completely wrong for the amp, the tube bias seemed too cold, and the guitar was not sounding that good either - not the holy grail I expected for that 50's mention. I have a Thunderverb (similar) and it sounds a lot better than this demo. And, sorry John, but Nashville licks on a Rockerverb? Are any of those twangy studio cats up there using this amp for that?

Orange has a very confusing way of labeling their speaker outputs. its never ok to pug into a 8ohm spesker or cab. the amp has 1-16 and 2-8ohn outputs, the 16 ohm output is obviously for plugging into 16 ohm speaker. here's where it gets confusing, the 2 - 8 ohm outputs are only used to plug into 2-16 ohm speakers which = 8 ohm. you are never supposed to use an 8 ohm speaker with this amp. ORANGE AMPS ROCK! just think of a hot rodded marshall tone on steroids. The clean channel is not pristine. its thick with a little hair on it. which is what I like. the amp does not work well with all drive pedals. Fulltone OCD and a tube screamer sound awesome with these amps. the amp has a huge mids. If youlike scooped mids ,experiment with different speakers. Is if you crank the mids, this amp will cut thru the band like a knife. you will be heard at lower volume level and sound great doing it, OR there's a switch alowingthe amp to run on different types of tubes. they presently come with 2-el34 's. Always rebias when changing power tubes
