    That's a handy estimation tool. I've found an even more accurate way to estimate a squre root to be this equation:
    Sqrt(X) = Sqrt(L) + (X - L) /(U - L)
    Where:
    X is the number you want to find the square root of
    L is the lower square
    U is the upper square
    The only difference from the video being that you divide by (U - L) instead of (sqrt(L) x 2)

    • @NiceGoat
      @NiceGoat Рік тому +1

      @@kaiji2542 sure, for example if you want to find the square root of 210, you know the lower square is 196 (square of 14) and the upper square is 225 (square of 15). So the math would be:
      Sqrt(210) = Sqrt(196) + (210 - 196)/(225 - 196)
      Which simplifies to:
      Sqrt(210) = 14 + 14/29
      Sqrt(210) = 14.48
      (Note that the above are approximations, not equations)

    45 square root:
    1st find the nearest square that is 6×6=36
    2nd 45- 36=9
    3rd 9/6×2 = 9/12
    4th 1/12 = 0.83 so 9×0.83= 7.47
    5th the answer is 7.47

    • @rockstarv.6465
      @rockstarv.6465 2 роки тому

      Bro square of 7 is 49 and 45 is a no. less than 49. Hence, the root of 45 must be less than 7.
      Also, the trick Math-O-Genius told in this video is based on the method of linear approximation formula that you may see when you are studying calculus(differentiation part basically) and it suggests that the error should be as less as it can be. More will be the error(difference between the original no. inside the square root function and the closest perfect square no. to the original no. that we know of), more will be the difference between the original ans. and the approximately calculated ans.
      *Edit* - I just saw you opted a fine approach but committed just a minor mistake - 1/12 = 0.0833
      Hence, 9/12 = 0.749(approx.)
      So, answer will be
      => 6 + 9/12 = 6.749 (approx)
      You can also do it like -
      7 x 7 = 49
      =>Error = 3
      =>Ans = 7 - 3/(7 x 2)
      = 7 - 3/14
      = 6.78 (approx)
      *And the original answer is 6.708*
      Both the answers are pretty close...

    This is the approximation from Application of Derivatives, to get an even accurate answer, choose the closest perfect square not the lower one.
    Eg:
    For 21, 25 is 4 units away while 16 is 5 units away.
    So 21 = 25-4
    Hence, sqrt(21) = sqrt(25) -4(1/2(sqrt(25)))
    So, sqrt(21) = 5 - 4(1/2(5))
    sqrt(21) = 5 - 4(1/10)
    = 5 - 0.4
    = 4.6
    For an example like 19, 16 was the better choice because 16 is only 3 units away while 25 is 6 units away.

    • @MathTidbits
      @MathTidbits 11 місяців тому

      this formula does not exactly work the way of how close the number is to the lower or upper perfect square. the main criteria is the geometric mean of the two upper and lower perfect squares. if the given number is less than this geometric mean,use the lower perfect square,and if the given number is greater than the geometric mean,use the higher perfect square. if the given number is exactly the geometric mean, then choosing either perfect square will yield you the same answer and not nearness to either perfect square.
      example sqrt of 20, lies between 16 and 25. by normal intuition, use of 16 (4 units away) will yield the better answer than 25 (5 units away). if you try calculate using 16 or 25, the answer are both the same 4.5 : 4 + (4/2/4) = 4.5 = 5 + (-5/2/5) . because geometric mean of 16 and 25 is exactly 20. this is especially noticeable when the number is small like square root of 2 lies between square root of 1 and 4.
