  • Harbor Freight Folding Trailer. This is my Harbor Freight folding trailer model number1720 heavy duty. This trailer is item # 62647 and has a 1,720LB rating. In this video I show you you my 10 trailer mods, (really 11), that I have made to my folding trailer over the past 4 years.
    1️⃣🟢The first trailer modification that I made was the flooring. I used 5/8" OSB plywood for the floor. I put three coats of polyurethane on both sides for protection. I used 3/8' carriage bolts to attach my flooring.
    2️⃣🟢My number 2 mod was to add waterproof trailer lights. I use my folding trailer for my boat so these were a must have!
    3️⃣🟢Number 3 was to upgrade to a 7 blade trailer connector. The 5 pin connector that came with my trailer was not compatible with my 2015 F-150.
    4️⃣🟢Number 4 is the custom side rail system that I made. Every utility trailer needs to have a side rail system to strap down various cargo. These rails are made from 2x3's and I used 3/8' bolts with neoprene nuts to build the rails
    5️⃣🟢Number 5 was to add a 1,000LB swivel jack. Every trailer needs a trailer jack with a wheel to move it around when its not connected to a vehicle. These trailer jacks are not expensive.
    6️⃣🟢My number 6 mod was to ditch the 12" wheels and tires and convert to 13" Carlisle Radial Trail HD trailer tires. 13" rims are easy to find and very inexpensive. Having taller 13" wheels that are rated for 80 MPH instead of 55 is pretty awesome! I used 5mm spacers behind my wheels to keep the tires away from the trailer.
    7️⃣🟢My spare tire mounting system allows me to store my spare tire for my folding trailer underneath the trailer tongue. This is convenient both on the road and while the trailer is folded up in storage. I also mounted a four-way lug wrench and bottle jack underneath the trailer floor so that I am always prepared!
    8️⃣🟢This modification is arguably the best and most important of all of my mods. The Harbor Freight Folding Trailers FOLDS!!!! Once these trailers fold in half there is no built in mechanism to hold them together. No latch... I made an awesome latching system that safely holds the two halves of the trailer together while in storage and cleverly stows out of the way when the trailer is in use.
    9️⃣🟢This simple little mod keeps my license plate out of the way when the trailer is folded up so that I can push it against the wall and the hinge lets the license plate drop back into position when the trailer is on the road. The first time my license place cut my arm is when I took a grinder to the bracket and made this mod!
    9️⃣1/2🟢The cheesy plastic caster wheels that came with this trailer fell apart a few weeks after I stored my trailer for the first time. I fought with them for two seasons before I upgraded to the cast iron wheels that are on it now. So worth it!
    🔟🟢Upgrading the wheel bearings on this trailer should be a priority for anyone who owns one. I removed and re-packed my bearings on a regular basis because I use my trailer for my boat. Even though I used quality marine grease and re-packed at the end of each season, after four years my OEM bearings were worn out. They are not a quality bearing to begin with.

    Really like your side rails. They keep the bed at a true 4 x 8 size so one can haul 4 x 8 panels. Someone somewhere used Mdf for side panels cut to fit in the stake pockets and added ripped 2 x 4's for reinforcement for the Mdf.

    I used hinges in the corner of my rails, and padlock latches and pins in back. Pulling the hinge pins makes storage a breeze. I also put 6 light duty d-rings around the trailer rails. I used rivnuts. Makes securing loads a breeze. I use one of the ratchet straps to secure the trailer when folded.

    I had the HF trailer as well. I used 3/4 plywood. I primed it and painted it with oil based primer and paint on all sides before bolting it down, with relief cuts near the hinges. I installed the jack as well. My sides were like yours but I used deck screws and a washer to bolt them to the metal flanges. I used a bungee cord to hold the two sides together.
    I opted to leave the license plate fixed, so I would cut myself every time I walked by it. Good video

      That’s funny (not funny)! I have a license plate scar or two myself. The first year I had this trailer I backed into a tree camping and bent the license plate bracket so bad that on the way home it broke off in the corner and I dragged it for a mile or so. I welded it back together and after a few more mishaps I came up the folding solution. Thanks for watching!

    I LOVE your onboard tools! That said I would include a more positive lock or holder for each item, and not count on only those spring clips to keep their grip under all circumstances. Would hate to have a 4-way launch from beneath the vehicle right in front of me one day!
    I've had my HF foldable since about 2003 and have put it through literal tons of work. Once had 8 Volvo engines at a time on the thing! Also loads of cement bags and cinder blocks. The last couple weeks I've been doing a bunch of mods I've long wanted. One is smaller lights in welded frames, because I've gone through half a dozen sets of regular bolt on stock trailer lights. They always BREAK around the mounting bolts, not even counting the times I munted them on an obstacle or while dumping. I upgraded to LED side lights years ago and put an amber clearance light on the tongue by the hitch so aggressive drivers thinking of dipping in behind you get a clear visual sign that there's a trailer behind.
    For the license plate which has gotten bent dozens of times over the years, I ended up making a solid frame on the caster mount, so the plate is "staring at the ground" when the trailer is folded up and stowed. I considered mounting near the original location using hinges or chains so it could move instead of bend/break, but every way I tried to configure this was more work and less safe for the plate in use, plus it would dangle into the way when stowed. Mounting on the caster mount bar solved so many problems without presenting any new ones. Recessed a light up under the frame rails to shine on the whole plate but not out at other drivers' eyes, without any fancy shrouding.
    I upgraded to 13" trailer radials and need to get deep dish wheels, I have too little clearance to the frame and sides and one tire chafes badly when loaded. I also upgraded the bearings, seals, and grease very early in the trailer's life.
    For hardware to connect the sides, search "stake side hardware." I have 2 kinds, 1 passively mates into the other when installed in the correct order which I have on the back of the dump trailer, the other kind manually latches and unlatches much like a gate lock, and any side can be removed in any order, for the lower/heavier open set of sides that are as likely to be used for un/loading from the side as the rear. Very evolved designs and heavy duty, they mate together smoothly and hold firm in the directions sides try to move relative to each other while in motion.

    OSB is for interior use friend. Any defect, or edge, is going to swell 15% and have no structural rigidity. Ideally marine grade or even fiberglass clad.
    As for the thickness problem - that's where your welding expertise comes into play.
    That rail fence looks cheap but the cost is over the top, especially when time counts. Next time I'm going to use scrap thin wall tube. There's got to be a better way.
    GREAT INFO
    But it makes more sense to buy an upgraded DIY TRAILER KIT - maybe. Gonna look for one.

    One thing I hate is the location of the vertical bolts that you install when setting up the trailer. I made a wedge from 2 x 4 that fits in the frame channel and holds the bolt in place while being tightened. Cut down my time fiddling with them to about 1 minute per side.

    I’d like to know how much it cost to do the upgrades. I remember seeing a deal on a better utility trailer from Home Depot for like $1,000 and I got it because of the money and time savings. It’s worked out well. It already had a beefier axle, wheels, bearings and deck.

    For anyone considering buying a trailer. I just went through a nightmare and not sure it's finished. It took a total of 3 stores. I went online to look for the closet store that had heavier duty one in stock. The store closet to me had none, so I went to the second closet. They told me they do not have any. They had one sitting up front on display. It turns out the one on display they are counting as inventory. I told them I'd take it and they told me no. They know these trailers are often hard to find so they trick people into coming into that store location for the trailer, only to be told they actually do not have any, even though it's sitting right in front of everyone as a display. Very crooked or at least dishonest. Anyhow, they at least call another store but it's pretty far. They confirmed they had the trailer I wanted in stock. What was interesting is the guy was clear to me that they had both matching boxes. At the time this seemed odd to say but I didn't pay much attention to it. I get to the store and pick up a couple of items and tell them I'm there to pick up the trailer. They bring it out in two boxes. The guy gets nervous because he has to fill out the title stuff. Had a 'how to' binder, I assume the store created so the paperwork gets completed correctly. It was a disaster. He was coming things out and stamping in the wrong place. I was like hey man are you sure you know what you are doing. He asked a couple of people for help. They assured me all is good with the paperwork. I ended up going to the store next to me to have a manager review because it looked off to me still. She made a correction but no stamp in front of the title. I went to get the title and registration a few days later. They basically laughed at me. Told me to get an affidavit and correct the stamp location. I went to the store closest to me again for this. She was very helpful but had to call the store manager in the place I bought it from originally. I went back to get it registered and after a lot of people reviewed the paperwork they decided to do it but advised it could come back later as not valid. So it was a nightmare going through all this. Lots of my time wasted. I hadn't even put it together yet. Now get this. I open the large box with all the parts because I wanted to paint it with a paint that would not fade like the factory paint does. What's odd is i unpack a front cross member. In my head I'm like oh wow, I thought this only came with the light weight version of the trailer. I'm like sweet, they upgraded. I take all the red parts out and paint them. Looks great. Lots of time spent on it. I planned on putting it together this weekend. Even though I've watched at least ten videos on how to put it together I decided to read the manual. I almost crapped myself. The manual is for the smaller trailer!!!! They gave me the wrong trailer!!!!! I paid for the heavy duty version and they gave me the lighter version. Wth!!! It turns out this goes back to the comment about two matching boxes. They gave me the small box of the heavy trailer which has the wheels and springs. The large box is all the framing and axle of the lighter trailer. What a joke!
    I've put so much time ahead work into this already without even assembling it, even have a wood deck purchased and cut. I can't return it at this point with all the registration fees paid, the frame painted and the store being an hour away. I will put it together and see how it turns out. Not happy about it at all. This also means the next person will get mixed boxes, or maybe it happened before me and I got the mixed boxes. This is just a warning for anyone thinking of getting a trailer.
    First, call the store to see if they are trying to be crooked by showing a display as available inventory online. Two, when they bring out two boxes make sure they match! If you make it to three, demand a manager completes the paperwork and that the manager goes slow. Any corrections or scribbles will require you to go back and get an affidavit later.
    If someone from Harbor Freight contacts me and makes this right I will let everyone know. I will be sharing this in many places to get the word out.

    Please describe step by step(if possible) adding the flooring. Looking at my trailor...did you just lay the board ON TOP of the existing bolts and THEN add bolts to secure the floor? If so, did laying the floor on top of the existying bolts create issues?

      @MrFredsDIY  Рік тому +1

      First, thanks for checking out the video! I did place the flooring over top of the frame bolts however, I used a Forster drill bit the size if the bolt heads to give relief to the flooring so it would lay flat. I also made sure that my trailer was square before I tightened everything down. Good luck with your project.!

    Hi Fred. I just bought this trailer however it came with 4 lug 4.80/12" Carlile Radial Trail LH tires. Do you know if I can get a 13" radial for a 4 lug wheel? I've heard of people welding the frame at critical points as well to give a more sturdy frame. I'm starting to build a tear drop camper on the trailer but would like to drive faster than 55mph. Thanks for the video!

      @MrFredsDIY  2 роки тому

      I’ve heard of folks welding the hinges. A weld could be places along the frame where the rear deck nests as well. If you figure out the bolt pattern for the 4 lugs you can see if a 13” rim is available in a 4 lug. You can take the trailer to Discount Tire or equivalent and have them tell you the bolts pattern as well as quote a price for 13’ rims. In the end you would have the information you need and could buy rims on the internet. Thanks for watching!
