I've even been at Emil Gilels's concert in Helsinki at the 1970'ies. He was a genius playing this sonata. Forte or just enourmos gestures but landing on the pedals (?) so lightly piano pianissimo. I believe this sonata is in my brain! When I die, it will fade...
Clearly obvious: whatever young pianists lack in intelectual grasp they highly compensate in speed and power. Fortunately, just like wine, as they get older music, emotions and intelectual demads proove much more important.
Spesso vero. Tradizione. Tradizione. Tradizione.
I play the 3rd movement now but I never realized the 2nd is so beautiful - I'm going to learn it. especially beautiful: starting at 12:42 ❤ I love how he made use of scales I love the structure. I wonder how many pieces he wrote just from trying to stay interested when practicing scales and arpeggios.
Gilels is something in this ! Just heard EllyNey the Nazi play this incredibly intelligently .She's smarter in many places knows to play wout pedal. And she holds back and when it comes it makes sense. Gilels is a tornado but Ney somehow weaves a magic with 2nd movement and finale . Less boisterous makes the sf's mean something . Gilels already in the 3rd movement is unleashing hurricanes .Ney was smarter in this music though without his brawn .I actually want to leave this and be reminded of what she does here and there . Few pianists have this kind of stamina and frenzied etc. but one needs to remember pianos in the 1810's and 20's couldn't do what he's doing here . Compare her trills to the high passage descending 6:35 and which is musically more effective ? And the tremolos without pedal and left hand the main voice is Sense .Ney really is A Beethoven thinker !
not all but the most what is written here on YT ( by that sg Musicaly Persons like you ) about all the very very beautiful MUSIC, is mostly like 'shit' IMHO. Greatings !
This is incredible, but the third movement lacks the clarity and accuracy that Richter brings effortlessly. It's not as easy to listen to this recording.
More colorful beautiful piano sound for Beethoven than Haskil Moiseevich Solomon=Wilhelm Kempff Emil Gilels Radu Lupu Vladimir Ashkenazy Grigory Sokolov! More genius than Moiseevich Solomon Haskil=Sviatoslav Richter Maurizio Pollini Grigory Sokolov!!
+bach5861 Could you really have meant "too much INTENSITY?" There could never be ENOUGH "pianism" if by that you mean technical prowess applied to this particular sonata, which demands utmost strength and endurance from any pianist who plays the work with CONVICTION. This was a LIVE performance, so the sound quality is probably lacking. I did think Gilel's playing in the first movement was so muscular it was almost overwhelming. I was afraid he'd not get through without breaking at least one string. ;-) But the piece was not named APPASSIONATA for nothing! And nothing could be more tedious than a dry, polite, overly refined, perfectly accurate but sterile rendition of this Beethoven's most seething outburst of unbridled fury. Gilels produces a marvel of reckless abandon and unrestrained enthusiasm here. I feel certain BEETHOVEN, himself, would have loved this wild, fearless totally involved performance. Opus 57 is not supposed to be "pretty."

Fierce! Really astonishing.
0:00 Allegro assai
9:37 Andante con moto
16:17 Allegro ma non troppo
I read in You Tube high estimations of Ronald Brautigam and Melvin Tan`s Appassionata renditions. But, IMHO, Gilels is stronger. Extreme energiser

I am not certain what is obvious about your observation, perhaps you could state it more clearly.

UA-cam Thanks!

bloodgrss Really? Of the hundreds of wonderful pianists in history ------------------ Can you please list just a hundred, for the last 100 years?
