The entire “practice” mindset is more a means to tell many interested in playing that they are “less than”, that they need to be somehow “punished” through endless repetition until somebody else decides that they are finally “worthy” of holding a guitar. Too much emphasis on this repetition without a chance to breathe, and that’s when the guitar gets clicked back inside the case.
Finally, someone is teaching guitar playing in the context of playing good music!!! It's not just about theory or technique or memorization. It's about having fun :)
you are awesome, I wish I had you as a teacher when I was 15. I'm 62 now still trying to "get it" You inspired me, hopefully a young player latches on to your teachings and takes it forward to play like Clapton, Hendrix and other greats, to usher in a new century of creative musicial masters.
Yes! Timing has ALWAYS been my downfall! Second downfall is loosing my place in the progression. We as musicians like to "get lost" in the music, but the REAL musicians are never lost, even when they seem to be in their own world! TY for making these vids! I'm 62, Wish I had UA-cam when I was in my teens!
This is epic. im learning guitar in my early fifties. im doing what i consider an exceptional course, and i have learned the 5 pentatonic patterns, all minor and major root note locations, adding in the blues notes for blues scales, the full diatonic scales and all the modes. This video is eye opening because i often run my patterns alone without any backing tracks, which is something i have started adding, and i think just the backing tracks have made a big difference in my ability to be melodic and musical. i love your idea of being "self generating" alternating between chords and solo phrases. This will help with my timely transition to chords as well. i can't wait to get home and start using this! Thanks a bunch. You are an exceptional teacher.
When I bought my guitar, I didn't really want to play other people songs so badly. Enough if I could mingle around the fretboard with the right combination of chords and scales. Thank you for your explanation. It really helps me to understand better.
Honestly sir you cleared a lot of doubts. After doing basics as an intermediate player I don’t know what to work on. Now you cleared everything. I watched lot of UA-cam videos. But no clue your channel is the best 🎉. Rock and roll 🎸.
It's such an amazing advice actually.. it's kinda like a threasure hidden in the direct spot. Sounds so obvious but is such a revelation for a intermediate guitar digger! Thanks!
I LOVE your channel! I am an intermediate+ guitarist but always looking to solidify my knowledge and learn best from deep understanding of fundamentals. I don’t understand why you are not a lot more popular! Your method is very different from a lot of what’s out there and you explain very well. Your topic choices are great. This video and many others are really really helpful. Please make more and tell us how we can support you more.
i don't understand everything you teach, i'm german speaking (with a little speaking and understanding english) but i love watching the videos and learning a bit from them, great job, thanks
One of the best lessons I’ve experienced. Stop practicing new concepts and start playing the new concepts in time musically. Thank you very very much. You are a great instructor!.
Your explanation is so simple, I love it , I’ve been playing for years and this is by far best video out there. Thank you thank you and I’m going to incorporate this into my practice.
This works great for me since I play strictly solo guitar, trying to combine comping and melody! Thanks for posting! Joe Diorio recommended a similar path.
Learning to sing the head will self-generate the tune and get the ball rolling with a strong rhythm guitar. Playing in time with voice synced to the guitar. Taking singing lessons to help expedite. Key to the Highway for me presently. This is not on directly related to your topic but it stresses practicing scales vs getting up and putting out a jam song in time and making music. You Rock!
Awesome teacher. Playing music and practicing what a novel idea 💡 Thank you for that light bulb moment. Also loved the finding the relative, major and minor by using the rock ‘n’ roll signing 🤘
your way of explaining ideas really connects with me on a different level! Its like that I know some of what you said but its in the back of my mind and I just couldn't put it into context and you just come and say it loud and clear. Thank you so much, man. you earned a new subscriber❤
@@LeadGuitarWorkshop update: I have been creating music the way you explained for the past 5 days and I am actually producing something musical and not just scale sounds! I never thought it was THAT SIMPLE of an answer. Thank you so much again for this amazing eye opening video!
I’m an absolute beginner, started 9 months and I thought the videos on this channel were far too advanced for me and kept it for future study reference. This video though made me understand! I’ve been stuck at the Am penta for a month and completely lost, starting to think maybe the guitar isn’t for me! Such a slight path correction but I can feel this will help me develop… I shouldn’t have seen this on my way to work, time will not pass fast enough today 😂
Hi Suke, What an amazing video. I’ve only just found you and I love this great simple advice. I’ve now subscribed. I’m 4 years into playing and starting down the soloing over chord path. Very glad I have found your passion. 😊😊😊😊
Really glad I stumbled across you on UA-cam brother I am really fully appreciating your manner of teaching and getting a lot from it so thank you for that. Also not for nothing but when I first got on to your channel I thought it was George Clooney giving guitar lessons (which as any dude fully realizes is a good compliment to get hah)
@@LeadGuitarWorkshop I can see how it will help me. Now I do a lot of goofy noodling with no context. I think having a pattern of chords and notes alternating with a beat would be a good place for me to start.
when playing guitar feels like a waste of time, like you're going nowhere, or when the guitar feels like it's working against you, quit playing guitar and _play with_ the guitar.
My left hand pinky finger and ring finger are kinda weakish, so I run the hell out of the scales, I mean I spend hours a day to build up accuracy, strength and speed, especially focusing on those two weak fingers. (I want to use all four fingers, not three). I reward myself by noodling around with some songs and backing tracks. So I do about 90% practice, 10% playing songs. When my pinky finger and ring finger get stronger and I gain more confidence in using them, that will change. I can put on my makeup with my left hand now. 😄
Loving these lessons, what a guy, thanks so much. What beat buddy are you using and do you have a looper with it as well. cheers Hank. Any chance of a video of your gear that you use to make these videos.

Yes, yes and yes!
I swear this is IT! I’ve put in my reps, let’s make something that sounds like music now.
Agreed sick vid
One of the biggest blockers to self generating is lack of time awareness. Also a very underserved topic in the youtubeverse.

Thank you, so much of what I teach are those moments when I was like "why in the world didn't someone tell me that?"

"Real time and in context". I love it. Wisdom isn't complex, but it's hard to acquire. Your videos are great sources of musical wisdom.

this is so awesome! the beauty is in the simplicity. WHY HAVE I NEVER THOUGHT OF THIS... lol
This is very much like the best training for rock climbing is… rock climbing.
Where did the rest of your guitar go?
Headless,I love that guitar, You can see a detailed video I made about it in the Gear section on the channel
I leave the practicing to the multiplication tables, bar mirzvah tutoring, and piano lessons. Guitar is for playing! But YMMV.
you are soooooo RIGHT !!
