In this episode of Tarikh, Nikhil narrates the story of Operation Thunderbolt, also known as Operation Entebbe, was a daring rescue mission carried out by the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) in 1976. The operation aimed to free hostages held at Entebbe Airport in Uganda after an Air France plane was hijacked by Palestinian and German terrorists.
On June 27, 1976, an Air France flight with 248 passengers and a crew of 12 was hijacked en route from Tel Aviv to Paris. The hijackers, members of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) and the German Revolutionary Cells, diverted the plane to Entebbe Airport. They demanded the release of Palestinian and pro-Palestinian militants held in Israeli and European prisons.
In response, Israel launched Operation Thunderbolt. On July 4, Israeli commandos, led by Lieutenant Colonel Yonatan Netanyahu, brother of future Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, carried out a lightning-fast assault on the airport. The commandos, traveling in C-130 Hercules transport planes, landed undetected and quickly made their way to the terminal building.
In a meticulously planned operation, the Israeli forces neutralized the terrorists and rescued the hostages. Tragically, Yonatan Netanyahu was killed during the operation, but the majority of the hostages were successfully freed and brought back to Israel. The IDF destroyed several Ugandan fighter jets and other military installations as they departed.
Operation Thunderbolt demonstrated Israel's determination to protect its citizens and its ability to project military power across long distances. It also had broader implications, showcasing Israel's counterterrorism capabilities and sending a message that it would take decisive action to combat terrorism.
The successful outcome of Operation Thunderbolt brought international acclaim to Israel and highlighted the importance of international cooperation in combating terrorism. The operation remains a symbol of Israeli resolve and a testament to the bravery of the IDF commandos involved.
