  • I decided I needed to try out a wide angle lens to see how I get on with it for woodland and perhaps star field photography.
    Come join me at Sherwood Forest for a wander for the first time with my new Olympus M.Zuiko 9-18mm f/4-5.6 lens and see how I get on with it.

    Good ideas. I have this lens. It has a lock which is a bit of a nuisance but as you say it's very compact and light. Its length falls too close to my phone so taking it out seems to be a luxury as I dislike changing lens.

      For me it's a handy carry around lens that definitely gets better results than my phone but for some things it's a case of weighing up if it's worth using it over the 12-100.
      Definitely be keeping it in the bag just in case though!

    The background distortion is mad when you are using it vlogging in the woods.

      It's definitely not a pro lens but used right you can get reasonable results from it.

    is 9-18mm optically stabilized?

    • @LeighWPhotos
      @LeighWPhotos  Рік тому

      Unfortunately not, but for a lens that small I don't think it's something they'd be able to fit in! In fact none of the Olympus lenses that are wide have built in stability but the in body stabilisation is that good it's not likely to even become a problem.

    Honestly. I’m just trying filming in 4k and I find it just “too clear”. 🤷🏻‍♀️
    I rarely use it. Only for a scene that needs that “look.”

      I ended up not using the lens at all so sold it on! Now have the Lumix Leica 9mm for those wide moments if I need it!

    What lens is on the handheld“talking head” content of this video? I’m wanting a vlogging lens, and wondering if this lens would kind of be a one-lens solution. (Panny GX-8)

      That was my Olympus 12-100mm F4 Pro - not a lightweight option but it's great for if I'm off out and about hiking as I only need to take the one camera!
      The 9-18 would work great though I think - a little wider than normal but would work pretty well if you dial it up to around the 12mm mark for filming!

      @AlanHouser @@LeighWPhotos ... I have both these lenses, and have been experimenting with them in "practice" vlogging. So far, I like the 9-18mm for this. I'm practicing to adjust the zoom unseen with my hand, as I point out landscape features, and sometimes pivot the camera to take myself out of the frame. The lens is only 155 grams and 2" long, so it's easy to maneuver. I'm trying this on two lightweight Olympus bodies, with good IBIS, which also helps a lot.
      I appreciated your video!

    My comment would be that I would like you to comment a little about the composition of the photos because photographing with an ultrawide lens is a difficult proposition. You have to discern what to include and also what to not include.

    • @LeighWPhotos
      @LeighWPhotos  2 роки тому

      Definitely look a bit more into that when I get out with it again I think - certainly be able to think a little more about the compositions and less about avoiding the inevitable people that were wandering through the frame most of the time ;)

      Photographers are either anti-social or boring .....sorry but I should know, I am one.
