Natalie Dessay talks Giulio Cesare, dancing, her troubles, and her joys with the late Margaret Juntwait!
I was at MET on Apr 27 when they did HD bradcast, and Natalie was radiant! She just proved she's an artist in a class of her own, with her superb musicality (despite her weakening voice) and astonishing ability to integrate her singing, dance and other movements into the character that she personifies on stage.
I overheard, during intermissions & after the show, many people (men & women) saying "I'm in love with N Dessay!" Brava Natalie, I'm going back again during this run!
Aaaaah it's so good to have a happy Natalie! :-)
totally agree. I was really swept away.
i saw her 22 th april and she was simply glowing vital sweet and in vocal great shape, better than premiere and 27 th april, she didnt break once and live her voice is much more glowing than in recordings nowadays!!!
v'adoro was pure poetry and grace, se pieta was very inner and the singing in da tempesta was wayyyy better than in all recordings!!!
Dessay was really GOOD, a huge gift of... a bath of beauty
joy and grace and energy, OH natalie!!
That Paris production of Caesar in Egypt with Emmanuelle Haim conducting was fantastic. I don't know if SHE was happy but the audience sure was and she got to use her comedic talents to great effect.
This interview is interesting since what I found Natalie did so well (& was missing in "original" Cleopatra whom I saw on Apr 9) was that she so clearly set forth the dynamics between characters. She had unique chemistry not only w/ Cesare but also w/ Tolomeo, Nireno et al, which invigorated the drama. The "love/hate" tension bet. the royal siblings was greatly portrayed (thanks also to excellent C Dumaux) and she was so persuasively a queen who has political will, inner struggles & compassion.
Confession time: I fell totally in love with Ms Dessay ages ago, but then I have something of a Cherobino complex, having fallen (and stayed) in love with Mirella Freni, Reri Grist, Christa Ludwig, Grace Bumbry and many others since the 1960s. I blame Jane Austen in Dessay's case: she seems to combine the slightly dotty lovableness of Catherine Morland with Lizzie Bennet's wit, intelligence, passion and wicked love of fun. And, of course, she's a fantastic singer actor.
I know! I am soooo happy for her and that she's enjoying herself for once. Now that I think about it, she has not done a happy role since La fille du régiment!
Was it as good as her Cleo in Paris?
well then she was also a bit unwell, she sang so even 22th april, not one crack, one slight and the B in v adore went good ( in HD it didnt) and her pianissimi were longggg s in the studio recording!!!!
she sang so well, and live the sound is so much more alive than in recording!!!
her voice needs space, they should record her from the hall!
I'm not exactly "in love with" Natalie. More like a long term infatuation. She is not perfect, but she does so many things soooo much better than I've ever seen that, along with what seems her offstage personality, she makes up maybe half of my total interest in music.
