It is in fact possible to filter water in this way, but you usually want thicker layers and a bunch of moss before the cloth to filter out as much sand/debris as possible. This is also for survival to get safe water to drink and not “good tasting” water

It’s worth noting you shouldn’t use brickets because they’re mixed with chemicals to aid the fire. Only use natural charcoal made from hard wood and pulverize it as much as possible. Also you shouldn’t drink the first batch of water you put through it. I’d only consider the 4th or 5th batch and even then it should be boiled for one minute before consuming
What’s cool about this is that this same thing occurs naturally all over the place and often ends up with cleaner water!
