Russia was ruined by that drunk fool (and by Gorbachev, of course) and this guy next to him is just glad that Yeltsin was like that. In 90s many people had literally nothing to eat in Russia, while on the other hand the economy boomed in US. It doesn't look cute or nice or whatevs... It looks miserable. Such an embarrassment for Russians who remember that time

  • @OptimisticLock
    @OptimisticLock 10 років тому +103

    The bloop is mostly the translator's. Correct translation is as follows. Dear ladies and gentlemen, dear journalists. First, I must say I had come here to this meeting at the invitation of the President of the United States Bill Clinton with less optimism than I have now. And this is all because of you; because even today, in all newspapers, based on yesterday's speech at the UN, you had predicted that today's meeting will fail. So, now, and this is not the first time I am saying this, I am telling you that YOU failed. ... I want to add to this that you underestimate presidents of two such great states. Maybe a way to solve this problem had not occurred to you; but it had occurred to us.
    Not a speech Clinton would ever say; but Clinton came to power largely thanks to these guys and they could make or break him; Yeltsin came to power speaking to the crowds from the top of the tank. He can afford to treat them as equals. Still, "you predicted our failure and your prediction failed" is not the same as "you are a disaster".

    • @yamcachol
      @yamcachol 10 років тому +4

      Thank you

    • @ash8128
      @ash8128 9 років тому +40

      No, I think the translator did a great job. When Eltsin said "провалится" about the meeting (or rather press prediction of it), the translator said "today's meeting was going to be a disaster". The translator didn't know what was coming next. "Fail" is usually used when a certain goal is not reached, while "disaster" is usually something totally and fully unsuccesfull, which is what "провалится" means here. Then, when Eltsin said "вы провалились", the translator had to use the same word - "disaster" - in both sentences ("провалится" and "провалились" are two forms of the same word). And he chose "you are disaster". Sounds alright to me, little childish probably, but no far from the original tone.
      More complete transcript:
      Eltsin: "…вы пререкли, что наша встреча сегодня она провалится."
      Translator: "…what you were writing was that today's meeting with president Bill Clinton was going to be a disaster."
      Eltsin: "так вот не в первый раз я вам говорю, что вы провались."
      Translator: "For the time I can say to you, that you are the disaster".

    • @BrainOnn
      @BrainOnn 9 років тому +6

      +ash8128 Imimi's translation is better. But yeah I agree the general meaning had not changed. (P.S. as a russian I can tell you that провалиться (наша встреча сегодня она провалится) mean exactly as a "failed meeting" rather than a "disaster". If he would wanted to say something like a "this meeting would be a disaster" he would use "наша встреча сегодня будет провалом". trust me comrade ;)

    I'm a native Russian speaker and it'd be more accurate to translate what he said as "failure" rather than "disaster". But "disaster" sure sounds funnier :) BTW, Clinton's "be sure you get the right attribution there" was also somewhat lost in translation and was translated into Russian as "I hope you got the right idea".

    Reading these quotes are funny. Lighten up boys. Yeltsin is breaking all the rules of a politician. You know, say all the right things, suck up to the journalists. That's why Clinton is so quick to make sure the "attribution" gets placed correctly. He knows the media would murder him if he said what Yeltsin said. I love the fact that it was an "I don't give a shit" moment. It's refreshing.

    Things were lost in translation, I speak both languages and I can tell for sure. But laughter is better than the animosity we have today. And Clinton was laughing good-naturedly, I think

    Boris was a classic. This is how we won the cold war. I bet he is still sleeping off his booze in a pine box even though he had a brand new heart and a liver transplanted in the west. Miss him

    Clinton is such a shrewd politician.. you can see that. He basically saves Yeltsin there with a laugh and also by pulling him out of speaking anymore in the end with brotherly fashion. Well played, not an easy world
