In Europe, especially when flying out of London and Paris, I put all my things in an airport security issued clear plastic bag and then put that inside my regular transparent makeup bag. Simply because I like the sturdy security of my makeup bag but if they even make the smallest fuss, I pull out the plastic bag with the entire contents.... And that ends the conversation. It really depends on the agent though and what kind of mood they are in.

I can't believe they took your "USA TSA" bag. It shouldn't matter if it is empty!

    • @sunshinesmile94
      @sunshinesmile94 7 місяців тому +4

@@valerie8320 I think you misunderstood. Sometimes they demand you empty the contents of the USA approved TSA makeup bag into a ziplock plastic bag. The USA bag can fit more than the ziplock, so sometimes they make people throw things out. By putting the contents in a ziplock and placing the ziplock in the makeup bag, you guarantee that you do not go over their volume requirements.

some airports are starting to install new and better scanners that should finally end the liquid volume limit, and the need to take your electronics out of your bag. however, it's gonna take many years until they see widespread use, so these tips are still gonna be very useful for a looong time!

It went the the liquid volume limit, the liquid limit is in place so that people can't make explosives or illegal drugs with the liquids.

In the US some airports have those new machines, except we still have to abide by the liquid limit. Whereas at the airport in Amsterdam, you can leave all your liquids in your bag and you can even have water bottles and other larger liquids flying with you.

My favorite containers for small amounts of product are spare contact lens containers. They're cheap, sold in any drug store, come in sets, come in different colors, can store anything from cosmetic products to hand cream to hair gel and yes, contact lenses.

Here is another vote for contact lens cases for small amounts of liquids. Perfect for long weekends and, since they are so cheap and easy to find, bring double for up to one week trips (toothpaste, face wash, moisturizer, Vaseline, hand cream). Since they are made to contain saline, I know they won’t leak, and they take up very little space. I am planning to add one to my first aid kit for anti-itch cream and antibiotic cream.

I honestly just started re-using the small bottles that they give you at hotels. Some you cannot open easily and end up destroying, but others the top can pop off (and snaps back on) so you can re-use them, and many times they are under the 3oz limit so they make a perfect container to use/re-use for travel use. No need to buy any additional containers (not that they cost much anyway) but if you're traveling and staying in hotels, they are worth picking up (not just because you may use the shampoo or soap inside, but that you can re-use the bottles). I should probably note that yes I am a male, so I don't get carried away with carry-on liquids (like soaps, shampoos or other products) and generally only have a handful of products I really need when traveling so this system of re-using existing bottles works fine (usually it's just basic stuff anyway and if I'm going to be travelling somewhere for an extended period of time, I'll usually just buy a small bottle of whatever I need -- shampoo or soap --- whereever I'm going, and if it's for one night, then I may just do something simple and pack a small thing of shampoo and a bar of soap.

The dimensions shown for that "TSA approved" bag (at about 7:59) yield a volume of over 1900 cc -- which is nearly double the permitted one liter. I'm surprised that it hadn't been challenged sooner. TSA doesn't endorse any bags, especially not oversize ones.

When I was looking to get a sturdy reusable bag for my liquids, I actually did the math so if I do have issues with my bag, all my liquids should still fit in one of their bags. Those bags can be VERY misleading and if you do want one, do your research!

  • @MAB_Canada
    @MAB_Canada 7 місяців тому +4

I got one of those “TSA approved” bags as part of a travel kit purchase. It seemed bigger than the 1 litre/1 quart volume stipulated. The width and length matched the sizes required but the bag was almost 2 inches deep. So I did the math only to discover the bag was 1.5 litres in volume…so 50% bigger than the required size. I now use a Medium freezer bag to carry my liquids.

I bought the package of multi-sized liquid pouches a few months ago and just started using them recently, so not too much experience with them yet. But so far I’m impressed, and I love the fact that they collapse as the product inside is used. I’m glad you’ve had a good experience with them!

Nordstrom used to have great little twist off containers in beauty dept for samples, that I use for packing eye cream - since you don’t need more than dip of finger amount. I don’t know if they still have them for samples, but I wouldn’t mind getting some more! Despite tiny size they are useful for some things besides skin care too. It’s a clear container with a black lid!
I also travel with bar soap for body/ shampoo, and then a conditioner bar. I ditched the liquids, partly because I don’t like the clutter at home. I cut the bars to what I need for travel. 😊

As a male: 1 small travel size bar of clear glycerin soap (and a shave brush for shaving) will work for shaving, shampoo and body soap. A razor, deoderant, toothpaste, floss and toothbrush. Done. 7 items. Ziplock for soap, another ziplock to put all the items in.

So actually both my husband and I have the liquids bags purchased on Amazon. We never have an issue in the US with these bags. However, Europe was another matter. No one blinked an eye at it at Charles de Gaulle. But we had connecting flights through Heathrow and it all fell apart. The first agent said - this is too big. To me, not the husband. Granted it was packed about as tightly as possible and still zipped. It goes through the scanner - and gets flagged. -- though every single person in front of me, except the husband had 1 bag flagged. (and wow, people just wow - how do you not know or read the 20 signs through Heathrow about liquids). 30 min later and agent grabbed my bag, ran it through a scanner - said it was fine and moved me out of the way. The moral of the story is -- find a way to put that in your checked bag or don't bring it! They were tough on everyone. (though many of those people deserved it - I saw a woman with 3 ziplocs of full size items -- the TSA agent was tossing her stuff right and left).

I saved little containers from my eye creams over the years. Some are super nice, glass, and never leak even if they hold watery liquids. I never have to buy travel size anything and even if I toss or recycle them, I have loads more at home. I also always, always travel with the CATSA liquids baggie they have at airport. After security I put my things in a fancy make up bag, but through security, I don't risk it. Many moons ago, they made me toss expensive cream and lotion because they couldn't stuff them in their baggies.

I just went through CDG and luckily I watched this timely video. I did as another person suggested and was prepared. I put all of my liquids inside a quart bag and then into the Amazon purchased clear plastic bag (that previously had no issues in the US). Sure enough, the CDG agent gave me a plastic quart bag. I then took my prefilled quart bag out from my Amazon purchased bag and he was satisfied. Saved me a few minutes of annoyance! Thank you!

I guess it speaks for the tyranny of distance, but when I was looking for these kinds of things, I could not find them in the shops or there were exactly two poor quality choices. I don't know why New Zealand's stores have never grasped the 3-1-1 need for 'stuff' when Kiwis travel so much. Clear zip pouches are incredibly difficult to find... maybe because an old sandwich bag is in every house. Too bad if you want something nicer than GLAD's finest!
I have had to import almost every container for my 3-1-1 from other countries or re-use tiny sample jars. I even have coloured glass spray bottles because the perfume spritzers were not easy to get until recently!

On my last trip in September, a CATSA (Canadian equivalent toTSA) flagged my TSA bag and said it had too much in it. I went back out of the security area and went to an agent on the other side, no problem went right through. It makes no sense to me that different countries have different allowances.

  • @MrB68S

CDG is the absolute worst. I spent 13 hours there one day last summer (Air France's fault), and I could write a book. And it's not just security personell, it's everyone: gate agents, ticketing agents, cleaning staff... But yeah, security there are the worst demonstration of what happens when you give maximal power to a minimal person. Just one example in my book would be the security agent who had an issue with my liquids bag. It has "1 liter/1.2 qt." stamped right on it, and she insisted I was "making trouble". I had a hunch that she was especially bothered by the "TSA Approved" stamped on it--French people are very touchy about the US doing anything without prior French permission--so I showed her where it also said "EU approved", and she was assuaged by that...

Cadence capsules (pots) are the best. With magnetic lids and sides, they stack together well and hold just the “right” amount. I bought a bundle for a two week trip to Europe a few years ago and they have paid for themselves since. Great new sizes and colors. One of my capsules was run over by accident after dropping it as I got in a rental car! Got out, cleaned it off…a little scratched but in tact and still holding my sunscreen.

I’m like you I prefer the flat pouches for up to a 14 day trip but have an assortment of small pots, and tiny spritz ( some glass/ or plastic) with caps. Some of the Go Tube are just to big for a carry on with the other products I decant from my home supply. Also get a plastic medical syringe or vet syringe or Turkey baster that makes it easy to suck up your home products and squeeze into your pouch openings with little waste. I especially like the Matador Refillable Toothpaste tubes - a pack of (2)one for 1 week/ other for 2 weeks. They don’t leak and refill from the bottom with a unique clamp . They sell out quickly but grab one when they have them on their web site. I’m finicky about my toothpaste and it will pay for itself. Travel size products are too expensive and I’m finding cosmetic and other products are also getting pricey in other Countries unless you are checking your bag and plan to bring the large bottle home. I cut a bar of soap in half and use on a clean sponge or in a small case just enough to last my trip. I am atopic so I can’t always use the hotel in bathroom samples.

One if I get thirsty on the train (25 min.) to Paris the other to hold me until I stop at a café for a drink or lunch. Then I get a glass of water to refill them. There some potable fountains, but not always close for the refill. I save a lot of weight on my shoulders, not carrying a water bottle. I'm in my late 70s so one has to find ways to adapt.

I have had trouble with the TSA approved liquids bag at YVR on my recent trip. This was the only airport that it was a problem, and it has never been a problem there before! I did end up having to throw away 2 "travel size" bottles of items as they would not fit into the small bag they gave me. I think it was the shapes. Even with using smaller containers (including contact lens cases) for some liquids, I just could not squeeze them all in that tiny bag! Also, I had gone early for my flight and there were hardly any other passengers going through security, so I think that made them be more thorough! Incidentally, I had packed medical liquids in the bag as well, and was told that those do not need to be in there (eye drops, ear drops for example). I did not know that.

You are right! Medical liquids and gels do not need to be included in your liquids bag. Happy travels, Jodi!

It may have to do with the fact that TSA is not in Vancouver nor do their rules apply in another country such as Canada.

I use contact lense containers for all of my creams when I travel. I make labels for them and keep them in a reusable sandwich or snack bag. They have NEVER leaked yet for me, I’ve been doing this for a few years.

I am learning that contact lens containers are very popular and reliable. I may just add them to my travel collection for those small quantity creams I like to bring! Thanks!

Now I'm curious, would 4 fragrances for a 2 week trip be overkill? LOL Great call out on the atomizer though

I have the same clear liquids bag and was also challenged by the Paris CDG security agent. He made me transfer everything into their plastic bag and there were a few item that wouldn’t fit. He let me go through anyway.

The soap pack does not work at all for artisan (hand crafted) soap, I tried it and my soap turned to mush inside the bag.

TSA rules do not apply the rest of the world. So it's important to know what the requirements are for any country where you take a flight. That might even apply if you're just changing planes. So, don't assume that you can go all around the world with TSA approved products. Check the local rules and follow them. And don't show your American liquids bag if you're required to use something smaller. Put your liquids in the correct bag before you get to the security area and show that. You can always put that in your TSA bag after security. And if you have to go through security again when you're changing planes, don't buy anything in the first airport that won't fit into your liquids bag, e.g. bottles of booze!

The people at CDG were the least friendly, nonnnnnnnnn-helpful airport workers i have ever encountered.
I was supposed to have a wheelchair one time. After i was forced to walk MILES back and forth because not one person could give me accurate directions....i crawled back to the original counter. Finally got some granny's wheelchair and was pushed to a place not far from where i started an hour? Plus prior. Rude, unfeeling, not helpful or courteous .. and i speak French !

Any hacks for labeling the gotoobs? I use a sharpie, but it washes off so fast I can’t remember what’s what if I don’t relabel as soon as I get home.

I also use a sharpie. I write on the lid and then cover it with a piece of scotch tape. Won't last forever but long enough for my trip!

----well, under the circumstances of absolutely zero number customer's interest in any given web storefront's products -- and stiff competition for those barely viable commodities, online retailers---alongside gullible clientage, find they'd be prepared to be lenient with truth about claims of products capabilities -- in christening them wondrous designations '---must haves', otherwise--- they---vendors for the most part -- would be facing what---in all actualities, could never be the all time 'least dignified' of exits from merchandising---as there are far worse many evey time -- but undignified exit nonetheless...
