I live in the south approximately 10 miles north of Brighton. My washingtonia Robusta has been in the ground for nearly 5 years now after being in a pot for 3 without issues. Haven't really had a winter to worry about in that time though.
Excellent choice of hardy palms for the British climate, or indeed anywhere in the world that has a climate like the United Kingdom. I especially love your number one choice, of Jubaea Chilensis, The Chilean Wine Palm. I have on occasion Heard this palm referred to, as The Chile Coquito Nut Palm, Although Jubaea Chilensis in large sizes are very expensive, it appears recently that large specimens are increasingly difficult to obtain. I fear that in the not to distant future only small trees may be available in the United Kingdom.
Superb video Kris. Your palms are first class. Great to see the selection. My favourite is the brahea armata, a stunning colour. I agree with you regards the flowers. Stunning flowers online that I've seen. Gary Graggs channel in the Bay Area has some superb footage of the Clara varieties also. What's your experience of the edulis variety in your location? I'm curious as I have 3 of them, 2 in pots and 1 I've put in the ground to see how it'll do?

Very honest and informative video Kris, my erispothia palm is recovering from this winter but is certainly looking well now, my robusta didn’t make it though like you said they really do need a lot of care and protection mine was fleeced but still the crown got water in and all fronds have come out now, shame as they are such beautiful palms but never mind these things happen looking to replace with a jubea chilineis palm ✋
I grow all of your top three choices of palm in London. My Jubaea is slightly smaller, my Brahea is more than double the size of yours being 30 years old and my Butia is smaller but it went into a sulk for 3 years after being transplanted. My Washy’s trunk is 3.5 metres tall and I cover it with a replacement greenhouse cover on wooden posts in winter. I have the same trouble as you growing my Sabal. I love the heatwave we are having this week because palms everywhere in the U.K. will be putting on growth !
. Wow I had no idea we could grow so many palms in the UK. I'm more familier with tropical palms, like Marojejya, Sabinaria, Johannesteijsmannia etc. I'll give some of these hardy palms a go thanks
I love Butia's more than any other. But a Jubutia would be my ultimate feather palm hybrid. Not sure where I could get one for next spring? Planning a large raised bed as a centrepiece to the back of the garden
Another helpful video Kris. You say these palms don’t need much feeding because your deeper soil level is wet clay. But what fertiliser would you recommend for those of us with average loamy soil apart from BF and B in spring ? Would you use an organic slow release granules type or a soluble quick release fertiliser ? I grow your top three choices which are also my favourites. 😎
How is the odorata getting on? This is my favourite palm although i love the jubaea i just love the bluey arching leaves on this. Would love a video dedicated to this palm talking about planting conditions. Growth rate. Comparison growth photos if you have any ect. I have 2 smaller ones from the palm centre and one is a different colour to the other and has thinner leaves wich i find strange.. Both purchased this year 4 weeks apart. The one with the thinner leaves has more of a bluey colour. The more green one has tougher leaves standing firmer on the fronds both have same size base with similar amount of leaves.
Great video, good information although the “Mexican Fan Palm Tree” generally refers to Washingtonia Robusta, not Brahea Armata , The Blue Mexican Palm or the Blue Hesper palm.

That's interesting that there's a difference in the common names. I guess the Latin names avoid confusion

They've gone up a lot in price like all palms. Small ones start at around £80 up to£1000
What about a Mule Palm?
Very often crossed with tender queens. Mines stone dead
