Crime Beat: The story of Christine Jessop and Guy Paul Morin: one murder, two tragedies | S1 E11

  • It was October 1984 in a small town outside Toronto, when a young girl went missing. Almost 3 months later, Christine Jessop’s body was found more than 50 kilometres away from her Queensville home. The nine-year-old was raped and murdered. After an intense police investigation, a former neighbour, Guy Paul Morin was charged. Numerous trials resulted first in an acquittal, then a conviction to an eventual wrongful conviction dismissal. A tragic tale that affected the lives of many, and a case that has never been solved.
UPDATE AS OF OCT 15, 2020: Toronto police say DNA has helped to solve the 1984 murder of Christine Jessop, however, the suspect is now dead. Toronto Police Chief James Ramer identified Calvin Hoover as Jessop’s murderer. He was 28 at the time of the case and he died in 2015.

This case hung over my childhood like a dark specter. I was slightly older than Christine and grew up in a similar rural community not far from Queensville. I remember being terrified that some person was out there snatching kids in a town that I knew, not some big city far away.
My mother was Guy Paul's alibi witness. He was a regular customer at her grocery store and she served him on practically a daily basis. Like usual, she served him on the day Christine went missing at a time that would have made it impossible for him to have committed the crime. Although she served hundreds of people a week, Guy Paul stood out because he was polite, friendly and very gentle natured.
My mother contacted the York Regional Police to share her interaction with Guy Paul on that day. She was never formally interviewed nor deposed by the Crown or Defense attorney. She called multiple times and thoroughly expected to be subpoenaed. There was NEVER any follow up from either the police or the attorneys.
I remember my mother being so frustrated and absolutely sick about his conviction. To know that someone is innocent and nobody was listening was a terrible burden to carry. My mother died in 2004 and up until a few years before her death, she still talked about the horrible miscarriage for both the Jessop and Morin families.
About the only bright spot in this whole debacle is that there is DNA. Hopefully they can get some sort of hit through GED match and finally bring justice to Christine. It's the least these keystone cops can do.

After watching several Crime Beat episodes one can honestly say that JUSTICE is a joke in Canada. Killers are given merely seven years for the crime and are allowed one day parole , an innocent person can just be picked up by cops and labeled a murderer without any evidence to back up the crime and a jury can find that innocent man guilty. A really scary place to live in.

There are so many children that have been raped and murdered and there is never justice for them! Anyone sexually attracted to children needs to be separated from society indefinitely. There is no known way to cure a humans sexual desires. The risk of physically & mentally fracturing the child for life is to great of a risk to take lightly. I myself have never had help and struggle everyday, it's exhausting!! I just set auto control and put on my happy face & take it day by day. I pray for change & for no more children to have their innocence stolen from them, it truly is a life sentence that survivors deal with while the rapists get away with it.

I actually have commented the same exact thing (essentially) in many other videos. Child sexual offenders have the highest chance at reoffending once released, yet get some of the most lenient sentences. That makes absolutely no sense. Why make a child suffer a life sentence (or no life, like in this case) & let the person who did that ever walk free?! I don’t agree they should be kept alive. There’s no use for them in society, anywhere. They can give nothing to any community. Most of the studies done on them have been done as thoroughly as possible, so that’s really not even an option. We cannot learn any more from them, than we already know. Also, no one is sentenced to life or death without DNA evidence in the last 25yrs to present, so this error doesn’t happen in these cases anymore.

If there was ever a Canadian version of Steven Avery, it's Guy Paul Morin. Two innocent men who were framed by police and were literally made out to be guilty.

I would take DNA from the Family men members to check them off, then you could work on getting DNA from the men of ages 19-27 from the town.

Queensville is right off the 404 Highway. The 400 isn't all that far away either. So, IMO there's no reason to focus solely and limit the investigation to the town.

This is a mistake that alot of forces make, they find someone suspicious, they're so caught up in rapping up the case and helping the family that they even unknowingly fabricate evidence under pressure, while the real killer gets away.

When you add evidence that ia tainted that is not being over zealous. That is being intentional pinning a murder on someone.

The Jessops won’t ‘get justice,’ because they fought teeth and nail *for* utter, despicable injustice. Little Miss I’m-Nothing-More-Than-The-Stereotypical-Housewife Janet did not like the fact that her neighbour was cultured and had hobbies unlike her dull self, and couldn’t be bothered to want to spend time with the likes of her, so she pointed him out to the police as a suspect, and she altered her own testimony WILLINGLY and INTENTIONALLY in order to help the police. She can act like she was manipulated by the police into changing her timeline, but we all heard her say she’s do anything to get someone found guilty - and we all know she did, by changing her testimony to fit the police’s timeline so Mr Morin could be found guilty. What she did is unforgivable. Mr Morin has “forgiven” her so he could find peace and not live his life with boiling hatred for this lying, scheming family. We all know in his heart he will never stop holding them accountable for all they did against him. And for that reason, they will never find the true justice that they chose to stray the police away from.

This case rides on DNA evidence; the best hope for resolution being GG (genetic genealogy.) While there is something to be said for identifying the offender, he’s likely to be dead. Sadly, the Jessops might never get their day in court but at least will have the certainty of knowing WHO did it. As for “why” - most offenders don’t understand why they commit these horrific crimes. How ironic that Ted Bundy’s one wish was to be “normal.”
