Hi Max, I have an ipad Pro and would love to play the chanter through Garage band on it . I have tried several ways to do this without success , can you recommend any equipment that would let me do this ??
@@alankingwell sure! I tried to explain this in the video above. Apparently not well enough? The equipment you need is also linked in the description / info box underneath the video.
@@maxbrinckmann Your explanation is prefect its just me and technology ;0) Are you saying that a USB-C /MICRO USB Cable will allow me to record and work my chanter in Garage Band ? Is it as simple as that ?
@@alankingwell yes! If your iPad is one of the recent USB type C models. And in this case you would also need software, because you have to convert the MIDI signal.
Great video Max - keep them coming... this channel and content is exactly what us BDC fans need. Love to see the BDC community growth explode in popularity in 2021 / 2022.
And how you get all the different instruments in your other videos!! Just got my Blair chanter a month ago so would like to learn some of this stuff you do!! Thanks for the videos
Dear Max, Bravo for your very interesting tuto. at the end of a song when I stop playing on Universal piper or GarageBand vía Universal piper, I cut using shutdown but the last note played continues to sound until I shut down the application. Have you ever had this problem ? maybe it should be cut differently?
Max,,,,,,this is brilliant. I have had my Blair chanter for 11 months now and up to now I have been recording on GarageBand through a speaker to the mic and as you can imagine the sound is not too good . I probably have several questions ;0) thank you
Hallo Max, thank you this is a very helpful video! I am a musician and a highland piper for a long time. I am thinking of buying a bdc and I spend quite a time on listening to videos about the bdc, but I am still not sure about the sound qualuity and its authencity. Are you a ghb piper yourself and what do you think of its authencity when you compare it? Did you made recordings with the bdc that are made in the described way? Best wishes from the harz mountains
@@maxbrinckmann A BIG Thank you Max, thanks to you I am now up and running with the chanter . Last year I took my ipad and chanter to an Apple store to see if they could give me any advice how to record my chanter to Garage band ,,,,and nobody in the store had a clue how to do it which surprised me So I am very grateful for your help and I cannot wait to have time to play now ;0) Have a great Christmas
This is great! Look forward to exploring this further. I have worked a little bit with GarageBand and the chanter but found such a lag between output and what I was playing, that I just stopped. Sounds like I need an additional app to maybe deal with this. Thanks for sharing. Love tech and exploring the possibilities.
For the Blair input I simply added a bit of reverb (you could also use the built-in reverb) and increased the mids just a tiny bit, and the lows a fair amount. And I think I added a compressor as well with a value of around 15-20%.
I don't have a Windows computer around, but the big advantage of the (mobile) GarageBand software is its absolute reduction to the most important features which also makes it incredibly easy to use. Apart from the software part, the tutorial also applies for any other computer. Check out Reaper if you want to try a free DAW that also runs on Windows.
That‘s odd. It‘s possible that if you‘re on an iPad with a lightning port, you need an additional power source in order to make it work. As for all things Apple: there‘s a dongle for that!
@@maxbrinckmann Max, I realize this is dated, but if you're still monitoring this link, could you identify the dongle you're referring to above - I have the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 3rd gen interface which has a USBC port, and an IPad 6th generation with a lighting port. I've hooked them up but there is no power to the interface, and I guess I need a separate power source for the interface (and to charge the IPad). Can you identify the dongle necessary? And since you made this excellent video, apparently Universal Piper is no longer available. Do you use a different MIDI app now? Again, thank you for an excellent presentation.
Do you like this video? If you have any other questions, let me know in the comments 💪

Would you please do a more detailed video on how to configure/record/process the midi signal? Thanks!

Hi Max , will I need the AUDIO INTERFACE to record on to Garage band or just the USB-C/MICRO USB and the Universal Piper App ?
You can go either way - these are the exact two options I'm lining out in the video.
@@maxbrinckmann Thank you , I have just ordered the cable , which should be here by the end of this week ;0) Fingers crossed this will work ;0)

Are you using Bluetooth headphones when experiencing the lag?
Sir, Do you have a singer, training, missionaries, electric flute?
Could you show what sound settings you used in garage band to get the best sound out of the chanter? (Reverb, EQ, etc)

This is informative, but is there anyway to connect to PC/Mac?
Sure, the same principles apply. You'd only connect it to a different device.
Hi there. Is there a way to do this on a regular laptop running windows?
Great tutorial by the way!

I’ve tried cable after cable, combination after combination and the only way I can record on GarageBand on the iPad is through the microphone.
