Would I rather catch a BIG Rudd or a BIG Roach? Simple. Big Rudd everytime. They're gorgeous fish and I'm lucky to have caught both species to just over 2 1/2lbs. RIP JW. You're a true fishing Legend and sorely missed by your millions of fans.
what an amazing fisherman. RIP to this wonderful man that brought us all such enjoyment when we were young and also filled our minds with possibilities.
Elstow pit no 1 doesn't exist anymore, it's been emptied and used for landfill for HS2 I believe! Such a shame as it was a mega prolific lake full of real lumps!
amazing fish and amazing catch from the one and only John Wilson. Ive caught some nice rudd over a pound in the past but that fish is something else. hes a lucky man, a dedicated angler and i hope he enjoys his thai retirement. although i suspect fishing will feature highly in passing his latter years...
You’d have a job, Elstow pit 1, a local water to me, is very famous for never ever having a common carp in it, ever. Not even a widlie! Let alone a forty pounder! It produced almost 30 different carp that grew to over 40lb over the years but never a common. Every one was a mirror. Pit 2 next door has a few commons but the biggest has been a mid thirty, and that’s only been very recently.
What a pity that true rudd of that size are so rare. There aren't many creatures that can compare with the beauty of a true rudd. They are quite demanding in their requirements, and, sadly, it seems to be beyond the will and wit of most clubs and fishery owners to create those conditions. So much easier to fill a water with ugly, plain F1 carp and ide to bring in money from the less than discerning anglers. Those that are so easily pleased repeatedly catching the same dull fish every week.
Not just fishing I grew up with John Wilson but also taught me a lot about nature itself RIP John thanks for all the memories
Dave Ward couldn’t of said it any better mate
Use to stay up until late to watch john on back then anglia television after the late news, absolute legend. R.I.P.

IMO the GOAT. How he fished, how he read the water and the fish. The Fred Dibnah of coarse fishing
A fish of dreams for most. Well done.
