- Weber grill igniter not sparking? Don't spend $25 for a new one until you try this easy fix. Be sure to apply the fix to both pos and neg battery terminals, even if they look clean. Those contacts have to be bright and clean in order to work.
i purchased a used grill as well, changed the used battery. of the igniter, nothing. After watching your video, cleaned the contact not on the bottom contact, but on the button-contact, worked like new. Thank you too.👍🏼 Your video helps saving money and material. great!
Just purchased a used one, igniter had a dead rusty battery in it. Put in a fresh battery, nothing. After watching your video, cleaned the bottom contact, worked like new. Thank you..👍🏼
Found your video. My wife is the griller and she told me the starter to the Weber wasn't working. The cap was off with the battery still in place and the entire igniter bottom had fallen out of the hole. I did your sandpaper trick, replaced the battery, seated the igniter back in the hole and made sure the two prongs were extended to hold it in place, and then twisted the button back. It works great. Thank you for that great trick.
Yup, saved me $$$. Much appreciated for your common sense. 6 years later and your post is still teaching.
Frank you are a indeed a genius. This stupid Weber grill is 2 years old. I replaced the igniter and it still didn't work. THEN I saw your video...and now it works. They need to find a better way to protect the battery compartment. Thanks!!
Worked perfectly... + terminal didn't look to bad but it is 5yrs old and once I cleaned it sparked better than ever!
All I can say is thank you. I had an old school igniter on my 35 year old Weber which worked with old fashion elbow grease. I then received a new assembled Weber grill as a gift and had no idea how it magically lit then discovered the battery and replaced it after it quit to no avail. I was going to order a new part…. Until I found you. Thank you Sir!
Great tip, Grill is working again like a new one. Saved 40 Euro. Thank you very much:
I was ready to replace Igniter on Weber Genesis but could not figure out an easy way to remove existing igniter. While looking for removal instructions I came across your video. One minute later, after scraping the terminals, it worked. Thank you - Thank you.
Awesome Fix Frank - I replaced the AA battery but still no spark - thanks to yer GREAT video I jus cleaned the rubber battery holder corrosion contacts w a little sand paper needle nose pliers and now it SNAPS again like a CHARM - THANK YOU !!!
Thank you! Watched vids on replacing the whole thing then tried your tip, fixed. The only thing I'll add was I had to clean the inside and little conections on the starter button aswell.
Fixed the problem!! Now I have a spare igniter as well. Recommend trying this before buying new igniter. Thanks for the video.
Did this on my Charmglow grill igniter. Didn't have sandpaper, so I cut a small square of a sponge's coarse side and a squirt of WD40. Worked like a charm!! Take my thumbs up sir!
Thank you Frank. Worked like a charm. I didn’t even take it out of the grill face.
This is one of the best tips I’ve seen for a repair on UA-cam. Thanks!! So simple yet it works.
Thank you sir. I wish I found this video earlier. Such a simple solution to a problem I've ignored for over a year. I cleaned it out just like you said and it solved the issue in a matter of seconds. Thanks again.
Frank, thanks so much. I would never have found the battery!
Frank, thank you very much. I just cleaned our negative terminal and it's igniting like a charm again. Thank you for taking the time to make and post this video. You have helped so many people!
I dropped a small piece of sandpaper into the pocket, took a pencil with the eraser side and just moved that sandpaper around to clean the positive terminal. Working like a champ again
Thanks for the info, I was ready to order a new ignitor. I took a 1/4" nut driver, cut some sandpaper and vinyl taped the sand paper to the driver. I first tried small zip ties but there wasn't enough clearance. I was able to rotate the driver and could see the contact was totally clean - it worked great, thanks again.
Perfect directions. All fixed. Thanks
Did not read through all the comments so someone may have already mentioned this but be sure to clean the contacts in the button assembly too. I cleaned the bottom contact in the module and had some slight improvement in triggering spark but the ticket for me was also cleaning the contacts in the button assembly. For the Genisis model, as you push on the button, those contacts hit the spring in the module assembly which has a lead down to the module. Once all were cleaned up a bit, worked like new. Thanks for the video tip Frank.
I was ready to buy a new igniter but decided to do as you did and it worked perfectly. Saved myself some money. Great suggestion.
Totally worked for me as well! I was just about to buy a new part when I found your video. You saved me $20! Thank you.
Thanks. I suspected something like that. Cleaned it up with some sand paper and I'm back in business. Saved me some money and an hour of work.
Thank you so much for your video!! So proud and happy I fixed it myself and didn't waste money on a new igniter!
Thank you!! Thank you!!
I bought the Homedepot $29 repair kit and for the hell of it I searched on utube. Found your video and checked mine out. Low and behold the negative contact on the other side as yours (inside the rubber boot) had some green stuff on it. Scratched it off with a piece of sandpaper just like you did.
IT WORKS NOW!!
Glad I saved the receipt...LOL.
thanks for not only showing how you fixed it, but noting in your comments how others have done it (i watched your video but tried the vinegar first and it worked perfectly).
Excellent troubleshooting. You're a good mechanic
Worked beautifully, Thanks!!!
Thank-you Frank!!!! I had bought a new one and was looking for a how to video to replace mine. I came across your video first and tried it and it worked!! The new one is in the shed now for some later date. Now I can go on to the next project without to much frustration. Thanks again!!
Thanks a lot for taking the time to do this. Found this post just as I was looking to buy a new ignitor. This solved the problem and saved me $30!
Thanks Frank. Brief, practical and to the point, as youtube fix-it videos should be.
Same feeling
Brilliant. Thank you!
thank you for posting this, my genesis worked perfectly after this.
Perfect Fix!!!1 Thank you! It actually saved $50 as I thought I would also have to change the 4 spark devices.
Hey Frank -
Appreciate posting this video. Works perfectly again now, on my Genesis, and avoided 40$ for the replacement igniter here.
Two thumbs up!!!
Thank you, solved my problem, and saved me money.
Thanks for the video Frank. Like one of the other comments, both the positive terminal (at the bottom of the tube) and the negative terminal (inside the push button) needed to be cleaned. Now it ignites the burners perfectly.
You sir are my hero! I popped the button off scraped it with 12v test light (long skinny sharp) the scraped the button to... Now good as new! Took all of maybe 30 seconds!
Thanks SO MUCH for posting this!! Worked like a charm, except my “needle nose” pliers were too fat and short to reach the positive contact.
So I scraped it with a flat head screwdriver and i’m back in business within two minutes
Fantastic! Easy solution to a very annoying and frustrating problem. Worked beautifully for me. Thanks.
Thanx a lot! I thought it was missing a wire seeing as there was only one going to the lighter, the entire battery was missing, and corroded. I simply scratched it up with a flathead, but will be finding something better real soon. Just wanted to see if there was any hope. Sure nuff is. Works like a champ!
I had already put a new igniter in my Amazon shopping cart. Then I looked up the video. Worked like a charm. For good measure, I added a little BoeShield anti-corrosion spray and then soaked it up. Thank you!
Just repaired our Condo’s Weber Genesis with Frank’s great advice. I used a pointed awl to scratch away the corrosion which really wasn’t excessive but nevertheless prevented igniter from sparking.
Worked great on my 10 year old Genesis! Thanks! Tried just a pencil eraser without the sandpaper and that didn't work.
Thanks Frank. That was my problem
Thank you! Thank you! I am not the most gifted 'repair guy' at home and this worked! :)
Thanks, Bud! Works again like a charm. The part holding the battery was actually coroded
Thank you for making the video. It got my igniter working again.
Frank you nailed it, are a genius, who are the 4 idiots that gave video thumbs down?
I putzed with this for months, never made the proper diagnosis...
Wow! I was ready to order the part, looked up directions. Used your advice and now it’s working!!!! Thank you so much!
OK, that was awesome. Thank you so much for your help
Worked for me, thanks!
Saved me $45 for parts and $7 on shipping from Weber. Thank you!
Customer service said these just last 2 years. I’m not ok with a $900 grill having an igniter last two years.
Thanks. I am so lazy I just wanted to buy a new grill. I cleaned the contacts and it works fine.
Thanks so much for this. It worked like a charm and saved me $35 for a new igniter kit. I plan to do it each spring as scheduled maintenance.
Worked for me on an ignitor that hadn't worked for months. I found water inside the ignitor and after I dried and cleaned as suggested, the burners fired right up!!
Excellent tip. On my unit I had to also had to clean the opposite end in the cap and also clean the electrodes where they come up the side of the battery compartment. These electrodes on the side make the internal connection from the battery cap post.
Worked like a charm on my Genesis. Thanks so much Frank.
Thank you! It's a 5 minute fix. I used a piece of sandpaper taped to a pencil eraser head.
Worked like a charm Frank 😎 Sir you saved me from sooooooo much grief 😪 Thanks man!
You are a rockstar! Thanks for showing me the way. Igniter is working once again.
Was ready to order a new part but tried this and it worked!
Thank you Frank you are the man!
Thank you! . Absolutely perfect. I had already bought the $29 piece at Home Depot. Dreading the hour or more process of installing. Tried your trick. Awesome! Taking back new one. Thanks!
Thank you Frank! Problem solved right away.
Nice video!
Your a damn genius. I was thinking I needed new igniters or switch. Done this method and it worked. Good work man.
Thanks! My grill wouldn't start up this spring, and this worked like a charm! Thanks for saving me $ and aggravation!
The button/cap is just plastic plated thinly with chrome to conduct the current when the button is pressed. The chrome wore off at the battery contact inside my button, so I ran a wire from the spring inside the tube to the outside end of the battery and made contact for ignition. Since this worked, I cut parts of the button and incorporated the wire into the cap. See if this works.
Thanks Frank!
Thanks very much for the great tip. My grill is now working again.
Great tip. I had some Silicone Lubricant (Moen), used a Qtip to put on the electrodes as they kept corroding. Has been 4 years and have not had to do the cleaning again. Also, take the battery out if not using for extended periods.
Is this solution still working.
@@AskAW It is still working. When I replace the battery I also put a thin coating on each end.
Hi Frank - thanks for the post. Was having the issue you described and the remedy worked! When I initially looked inside at the electrode, it looked fine - didn't see any corrosion, although there was a thin layer of something, maybe grease? The sandpaper did the trick after scrubbing a bit. I love UA-cam!
Worked for me too! Another person who saved $30.00.
Thanks
Thank you very much sir, you saved me $40 !!!!!!!
Thank you, it saved the dinner!
Thanks Frank.
Thankyou you are the men
Worked in less than 2 minutes on my Genesis. Thanks much.
I'll try this thanks. However, mine may be a different problem with the gas flow since the flame is quite diminished after I start it manually with a handheld lighter.
works great, but there is also a contact in the button for the negative end of the battery. This also needed sanding on mine.
Thanks for the video. Weber has a 2 year warranty on this part. If you've registered your grill and the igniter goes bad it is free part and FedEx delivery. How do I know? I just called Customer Support and they took great care of me.
Thanks so much for the help! I have a weber spirit 2 which has a bit of a different set up but the principle was the same. Cleaned the insides with a pick and some vinegar and bang! fixed!
good fix, however to keep the contacts from corroding again, put a dab of dielectric grease on both ends of the battery before reassembling. the stuff is amazing and will keep the corrosion away.
Hey, this fix worked!! Thanks much!!!!
Great tip, John. I'll clean the bottom (+) contact with WD-40, then apply some dielectric grease to it and the negative contact in the button.
Thank you. You said what i was thinking. Now I'll go do it.
Yes! Yes! I had a 3M scrubber pad, cut off a corner and executed your fix.
That's a great tip! Had it fixed in 5 min! Thanks Frank
I just cut a thin strip and wrapped it around a pencil with the eraser end doing the sanding. Also the other end of mine was corroded and needing sanding too. Since it's a $40 item on my Genesis S-330, was a big saver.
Yay! This totally worked! Thank you for sharing!
Your right, could not use needle nose, so got a thin slot screwdriver and scrapped it and cleaned area with a Q-tip...Bingo
THANK YOU FIGURED OUT FROM YOU HOW TO EASY FIX
Thanks, Frank!
after cleaning the contact, apply a small amount of dielectric drease to a q-tip and rub that on the contact to hopefully prevent future corrosion
Thank you, it worked for me as well, saved me $25 bucks.
Just saved me $30, thank you!!
That's great.
Going to pull mine off today to try this..
Very useful! Thank you very much for the information!
1 min job and worked fine.... thanks for saving me 55 EUR and 2 days delivery time... sausage is on the grill agian
