We tested our self-converted VW Crafter Camper Van for the FIRST TIME at the amazing RIAT 2023. We stayed at fairfordairshowcamping.net for 4 nights to really test our off-grid capability and had such a fun time! Dealing with Mud, Sweat and Typhoons plus an 8 week old baby and our 2 year old son really pushed us to the limit, find out in this vlog how we faired!

I live in the village along from Fairford, so get free shows from my back garden! It’s my absolute favourite time of year!🙈
We stopped at Townsend too. The mud was horrendous, but it hilarious that people trying to get out became a spectator sport😂

(24:17) Nice to briefly speak to Shaun and Harvey on Sunday when I'd got back from the show absolutely soaked and mud-splattered (I'm still cleaning mud off my kit) about the irony of your last year's video being about the challenges of it being absolutely sweltering, and this year's being drowned! Congrats on the progress with the Crafter. Maybe see you next year! PS: well done on extracting your van from the mire without being towed. I also managed it, thankfully, in my T5.

We have a wee place in Spain next to the airfield where the Spanish Patrulla Aguila is stationed and regularly see them training, very cool!

I was there too - think it was your video from last year that gave me the idea. The campsite did an amazing job dealing with the mud, I managed to get out without being towed 😀 I'll be there next year - I'll look out for you! Great vid as always 🍻

Are you attending again this year? In all my years visiting, the Friday of 2023 was probably the worst I have ever seen the weather. Luckily the rest of the week wasn’t too bad.

Great video. All the campsites around the base were the same. I was on Kempsford campsite.
Even with the poor weather it was a great show. I was in the FRIAT stand on the Saturday and at one point they told everyone to leave the stand as there was a severe weather warning, only lasted about 10 minutes.
It was the U2 leaving most of the mornings, very loud alarm clock.
Fab video, wonderful filming of the airshow, so glad you didn't get stuck in the mud on the way out 😊xx

Great video. I've done RIAT 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, (then we had that COVID thing!) and 2022. This year we had a year off as we didn't think we'd see anything that we hadn't seen before. Looks like you had a great spot on the campsite to see the Airshow. Wow! what a contrast from last year with the weather though! Last year, as you'll know was scorching! I plan to go to RIAT next year and plan to do it in a Crafter that I will convert into a camper (I still have to pin one down and buy it yet), but will hopefully have one and get it to a useable state by next July. I enjoy your vids and have gained some good tips on how to convert a van. Keep up the good work. Might see you at RIAT next Year 👍

Great video. We were there on Saturday, so sorry you had so much mud. We usually stay at the camp site but stayed in Cheltenham this year. Shame ,crap weather this year but onto next year 👍🏼

I don’t think the title is misleading, when we make a video on what works and what doesn’t work I think it’ll be titled “What we like and don’t like about our self-converted camper van”. 🤙

The weather was a bit grim all weekend. We were at Kempsford Camping and for the first time ever had to have our Knaus towed ONTO our pitch (we did manage to get out unaided on Sunday though). We were like drowned rats by the end of Saturday (our day at the show). A complete reversal of last years event. Great show again though
Since we’ve had two years of extreme weather, hopefully next year we’re due perfect conditions! 🤞

I had tickets for the Friday but by the time i had quit my job it was 10:30 and i had to drive down to RIAT from Cumbria , so didnt do it ....next year ;)

Great video thanks. We were there also, on the orange field. It was our first visit camping and we thoroughly enjoyed it. The organisation was unbelievable. I see you bought a radio this year. Would you mind telling me what make and model you got and whether it was easy to use please.

I've just bought a camper cv400 How are you finding it .
It’s really good. We may have to upgrade to something a little bigger now we have two kids but it’s still very good. Nice and compact

Takes quite a while. A good 30mins I’d say. It’s a very safe route but quite a way
