    I plant my seeds in the yard and dig down about 6feet. I fill the hole with compost and scrapings from the forest floor behind my house. Its dark black rich organic soil and the trees are always healthy and high producers. I do this for all my fruit trees, not just the Pawpaws. The high organic soil keeps the roots warm in the winter. The decaying material gives off heat. Pawpaws don't like to be uprooted and have massive setbacks when you transplant them. If i plant them inside to give them a headstart i use a long cardboard tube. In the spring i just plant the whole tube in the yard and it will become soil. Walmart sells the cardboard tubes in the shipping box area. I love Pawpaws and do everything i can to spread them around my local area. I give away about 100 every year that i started from seed. People love them.

    Awesome I have been growing them for years now. I recently move and found some giant 8 foot pluse trees at a local nursery. I immediately bought them up. I still own my old property. I took every seedling that wasn't planted near the woodbine with me. Hoping to get a crop off the 8 footers next year. They had 100s of flowers this year but a late frost got them.

    Interesting. I have two grown from seed last year and they didn't appear until late July and only managed three leaves.
    I'm waiting to pick up some more seeds from e-bay this year but I'm going to wait until I can order from the US and be reasonably sure they are this years seeds and not dried out bulk supplies from last year.
    I will definitely be starting the next batch indoors as per your method to maximise the length of the first growing season so thanks for hat tip.

      Mine only managed 3 leaves and about 3" growth - but the seeds were ordered late so by the time they'd had their stint in the fridge, it was getting on.
      Shoots didn't appear until mid July, so if I can bring that forward a bit, I will basically double the growing period in the first season

    Hi, thank you for posting this. I hope you're still out there and answering questions. I'm still fairly new to gardening. I've been growing vegetables but I'd like to start growing fruit. I'm curious about the PawPaw and have been considering growing a few Pawpaw trees. Would you mind telling me about the 'cold storage' of the seeds. What does it mean to "cold stratify' the seeds? Is it something you have to do before the seeds will germinate?

    • @maranscandy9350
      @maranscandy9350 5 років тому +1

      Doc T This is what I do. Clean the seeds completely and then sterilize them in a bowl containing 9 parts water and 1 part bleach for 10 minutes. Rinse well in water. Place them in a plastic bag along with slightly dampened peat moss, perlite, or vermiculite. You should not be able to squeeze water out of the storage material. Cold stratify the seeds by placing bag in the fridge for 120-150 days. Temp should be between 33F and 40F in order to mature the seed embryos.

      I had no set watering schedule. I checked the soil condition to determine when to water. If the soil is wet, withhold water. If the top layer is drying out, add water. I watered from the top lightly. I ran lights during daylight hours only.

    Can someone PLEASE help me with growing this from seed? I live in Ontario, Canada. Can't I just plant the seed directly into the earth? Won't nature take care of the stratification process when winter rolls around?

    • @GrowWhereYouArePlanted
      @GrowWhereYouArePlanted  2 роки тому

      Yes, nature will take care of stratification. However pawpaws grow naturally in a wooded area. Seedlings are shaded by the surrounding canopy. It you plant your seeds in full sun, it may die.

    I took them in small pots almost 25 days ago but still nothing

    and at last took them in wet towel for germination
    which one is correct?
    and what is best temperature and sun light for germination did you know?
    I appreciate you

      You should see the stem emerge from the soil after about 60 days. Seeds begin germinating when soil temps go above 70F as long as the seed was not frozen and did not dry out completely. The 120 day cold stratification below 40F matures the embryo during storage.

    • @maranscandy9350
      @maranscandy9350 5 років тому

      Backyard Gardening Plant seed 1-2 inches deep when soil temp is above 70F. Greenery should emerge about 65 days after planting.

    Some small seedlings( some 2' tall) have are growing around a pawpaw tree near a house we bought recently. How much luck have you had transplanting seedlings? Thank you for your informative info.

    • @GrowWhereYouArePlanted
      @GrowWhereYouArePlanted  7 років тому +4

      Hello. Are you sure that the trees are seedlings and not suckers? An established pawpaw tree 4+ years in age will send up root suckers every year. It is unusual to have 2-feet growth from a pawpaw seedling within a year, but would be normal growth for a sucker nourished by the mother tree. This vegetative reproduction allows one pawpaw to eventually form a colony of cloned pawpaws.
      Regardless, be it seedling or sucker, you should be able to successfully transplant it. I have transplanted many seedlings and suckers. Suckers may be a bit tricky because it can be difficult to dig up the roots without damaging them. I have listed the keys for transplant below.
      1. Transplant in early spring while the weather is warm but not scorching hot.
      2. Dig up as much of the root ball as possible, leaving some of the surrounding soil still intact against the roots. Try not to damage the roots.
      3. Dig a hole to plant the seedling/sucker. Amend the hole with good soil.
      4. Plant the seedling/sucker in the hole and water well upon planting.
      5. Provide the plant with 80% shade immediately and for the rest of the spring/summer.
      6. Water the plant daily for the first week. Every other day the second week. And at least twice a weekly for the rest of the spring and summer. If your weather patterns become dry and arid, increase the frequency of the watering. If rainy, decrease watering.

    Hello! Thanks for sharing. Where did you purchase your treepots? They are SO HARD to find! :)

    • @VerifyVeracity
      @VerifyVeracity 8 років тому +2

      Well today I went to our local lumber store & got me 4 - 4 inch round by 10 foot long S&D (sewage & Drain) PVC pipes, for about $ 7 each. I got the thinner pipe because I would think it is fine for this purpose, but there is a pipe that is a little thicker called 'SDR 35' but you'll pay about 5 bucks more per 10' stick. Well I cut them in 2 foot pieces, thus giving me 20 - 2 foot long pots for around $ 1.50 each. Now I don't think I'm going to put a bottom on them, I'll just be careful not to let the soil fall out, if I need/want to pick them up, but if I do put a bottom on them, I'll just use some vinyl screen held in place with some tape, string, or rubber band. I was thinking about cutting a slot length-ways through the pot, then taping or tying it so it stays together, in order to make it easier to get the Pawpaw plant out of the pot. But I really don't think I need to do that, I think the young plant will push out the bottom or push up & out the top with just a little care. I cut mine with my curricular saw, if you don't feel comfortable using that saw, please get someone else to do it, it's not the safest thing to do, or just cut it with a hand saw. I also like this because it is much longer than the ones in this nice video, & she herself kind of indicated the pot's could use more depth. And the 4" diameter should be just a little bit wider. But in the end, I will see how it works, I have 20 of them tied in a bunch with a string so then will all stand up together in a large tote I had laying around with wholes in it. Now I just need to decide If I should let the seeds sprout out a bit before I put them in the soil. :)

      @jenjenkins3058 8 років тому +1

      Funny, I was just looking at the drain pipe today thinking it would be a great alternative for pots. $6.98 at Lowes! I think I'll be adding some screen to the bottom of it. Everyone says the taproot is EXTREMELY sensitive! Also, I'm going to start mine right in the pots so there is even less chance of damaging the taproot. Thanks for sharing!

      Cathy, from where are you getting your seeds ? If the seeds dry out for any length of time, they will not germinate. If the person you sourced your seeds from allowed them to dry out, they’re not going to germinate.. Did you put your seeds in the fridge or freezer? They should NOT be in the freezer. Were the seeds in cold storage for 90 days or more? The seeds must remain chilled for at least 3 months. After sowing, allow the seeds about 2 months to germinate and produce the first couple of leaves. In my experience, pawpaw seeds that have been stored correctly have a high germination rate. If this is your 3rd attempt, I think there may be an issue with the seeds.

    • @cathyplantlover2862
      @cathyplantlover2862 4 роки тому +1

      Cathy plant lover , Trees mature at different rates depending on growing conditions. Under great conditions, they fruit in 4 years. Good luck!

  • @sleepermd2
    @sleepermd2 8 років тому +3

    Thanks for posting! What was your germination rate on the seeds? Did any fail to germinate? How did you store them in the fridge to cold stratify? I have tried this and out of 20 seeds only 3 have germinated and they took about 4 months to crack open!

    • @GrowWhereYouArePlanted
      @GrowWhereYouArePlanted  8 років тому +2

      The germination rate depended upon the length of time in cold storage. I had two batches of seed. The first batch was cold stratified for 75 days with a germination rate of about 45%. Second batch cold stratified for 90 days with germination rate of 85%+. Longer storage will yield a higher germination rate.
      As soon as you remove the seeds from the fruit, rinse them and wrap them in a moist paper towels. Then put the paper towel and seeds in a plastic storage bag, squeezing as much air from the bag as possible, and place them in the refrigerator. DO NOT LET THE SEEDS DRY OUT, even for a short period of time. Make sure your seeds are making good contact with the towel so as to keep the seeds moist but not flooded with water. Change the towel occasionally so as to avoid bacteria growth. Some people use damp moss or damp soil instead of paper towels. Leave them in the fridge for 90 or more days. 120 days would be best.

    • @GrowWhereYouArePlanted
      @GrowWhereYouArePlanted  8 років тому +2

      Some possible reasons for your low germination rate are:
      1. The seeds dried out at some point. If you purchased your seeds from someone, you cannot be certain that the seeds were properly cared for before you took ownership.
      2. The seeds were not cold stratified long enough.
      3. Bacteria or fungus damaged the seeds. You could quickly rinse the seeds in10% bleach water solution before cold storage. Changing the towel every 3weeks will help.
      4. The seeds were old. My research indicates sharp drop in germination after more than 2 years cold storage.
      Properly cared for pawpaw seeds should have a germination rate near 100%.

    • @GrowWhereYouArePlanted
      @GrowWhereYouArePlanted  8 років тому

      +amantedelenguaje2 I meant 2% bleach water. The bleach should not be too strong.

    • @VerifyVeracity
      @VerifyVeracity 8 років тому +2

      Just a kind of funny thought concerning the '10% bleach water solution'. Now I'm sure you meant that the bleach, that you buy from the store, (that is anywhere form 5% to 10%, but most often 8.25% solution/concentration), is diluted down to 10% of what you're getting from the store, thus making it a beach water solution of 0.825%, rather than then 10%. But then again, maybe you do mean just what you said. Thanks for the video. I liked your plants a lot. I have 3 Pawpaws growing in the ground, but am trying to get some more started. It's a little hot in Rockport TX, where I live but I still want to see what I can do with them, so far so good. Thanks again. :)

    • @Kulo_WC

      Cathy 111363 Stuewe & Sons is where I found the treepots I use. The 13.5 inch deep pots work well and the holes in the bottom air prune the roots to prevent encircling as long as you keep them off the ground. 9 treepots fit perfectly in an old milk crate for this.

      Do you have them shaded? Seedling pawpaws cannot tolerate much sun? How often do you water? What is your growing zone or location? Is the plant in ground or in container? How big are your plants?

      @@GrowWhereYouArePlanted I have the plants in pots and I've been keeping them outside. But before they were outside they all were in one pot and we're growing inside. They all came from seed and germinated indoors. But since they've gotten bigger I've put them in their individual pots, some two in one and put them outside. I changed the soil from Miracle growing to a different soil that's not miracle grow but don't think it wasn't a good choice because the leaves started taking on a black color and no new growth has taken place since.
      The size is of the plants range from 4 to 9 inches in hight.
