Founded by Neville Smith and Sid Ford, the fifteen-inch gauge Heatherslaw Light Railway opened in 1989 on the Ford and Etal estate. It operates over a route from Heatherslaw to Etal Village, a return trip of 4 miles (6.4 km).
It is promoted as the most northerly steam railway in England. Trains are haulled by the steam locomotives ‘Bunty’ and ‘Lady Augusta’, or by the diesel engine ‘Binky’.
