"誰に向かってもの言ってるんだよ?"
Wow, I'm really impressed by Bill's pronunciation. His accent actually makes it more scary. :D
I'm still a beginner in japanese, could you please translate the kanjis into hiraganas? :)
Sure!
だれに むかって もの いってるんだよ?
Dare-ni mukatte mono itterundayo?(Who do you think you're talking to?)
Thank you!
@@LittleB2007 Thank you!
Some Beat Takeshi vibes in that accent.
When he said "Who do you think you're talking to? in Japanese, he sounds really authentic. (yeah, it doesn't actually mean "Now you're going to die," but if someone uses the words he uses, a fight could well be the outcome because of the way it's said. The verb for "speaking" is the one used for humble language but since it's used for the person you're talking to, it shows that you consider them way beneath you. (Yeah, all that humble and honorific language is what is used largely instead of swearing in Japan.)
As for the Making Out book, I worked at the publisher that put that book out and helped with the editing. So glad Murray enjoyed it.
This is easily the best talk show on Earth. This format....why isn't it used in America? WAYY more social with a group and some drinks.
mebaran People getting shitfaced on US TV? I doubt that would sit well with the FCC
TheMegoShow You guys need to blow up the FCC and then pass them the video, see if they censor it.
+mebaran Does UK have more than one show using this format? I thought only Graham Norton does it this way. This format needs a host who can make strangers chatting like good old friends in minutes, I wonder how many hosts can make it work. Also I guess Americans are more sensitive about people drinking alcohol on a talk show set.
+Ruby Ti Alan Carr: Chatty Man is a bit like this
+Une Olesen In the US, James Corden's show's format is kind of like this. Still quite a new show so they don't have as many of the big big guests, but it's still pretty good.
This book is pure gold. It has even a section called "street fighting" and a sentence that goes something along the lines of "I don't love you anymore so I want you to delete my phone number".
Haha great line in a fight.
Is it me or does Bill Murray have the BEST stories?
Bill Murray is so fucking cool....
If I were to be killed by Bill Murray, I'd die a happy man knowing I was killed by one of the funniest guys in show business
Death by laughter....:D
TetraCurse Bill Murray, putting the "Laughter" in "Slaughter".
That's weird. Are you alright?
One of?
Bill Murray is the coolest man on the planet
This entire episode was off the walls funny.
Bill Murray is who I want to be as a grandfather
bill murray is a legend one of the greats for sure
Bill Murray is so eccentric he should be an honorary Brit.
I've decided to start writing a script for Bill Murray as Yakuza. I love that image of him saying it.
Bill only accepts work that he really, truly enjoys, and he LOVES that phrasebook, and that story, so if you're a good (re: great) writer...who knows? Just give his hotline a call and maybe he will be tickled enough to look into it.
And if not, I'm sure the internet would at least have some fun with it.
Bill Murray vs. Takeshi Kitano is in my dreams now haha
Hansley Juliano The funny thing is that he when he says the phrase he looks a bit like Beat Takeshita even to the point of adopting a fearsome scowl.
………...Soo hows that going and why havent i seen the film yet? I think hed do a serious role quite well
I can safely say that this was my favourite ever Graham Norton Show.
why cant we be friends Bill?! ugh such an awesome dude :)
Why can't we be friends Mary.. :)
Chanaka Weerasinghe There's something about mary.
We are friends, he just hasn't met everyone yet.
who do you think you're talking to?
Hi I just wanted to thank you again for being so supportive and following me on my journey. I love inspiring and encouraging others. People like you help me to keep showing up! Hope you are having an amazing day!❤
Bill Murray is always fun to watch.
This was a really great episode.
Bill Murray is my comedic inspiration. He does deadpan style so well.
I feel like Bill is a celebrity who wants to not be one and regress to the fullest. Didn't he like crash a party a few weeks ago? He's the best.
he's been regularly wandering around NYC crashing parties and giving people fatherly advice for a few years now. Just because he's Bill Murray.
stfwho What a beautiful man. I'd give my center nut to just sit down and talk with that hilarious fucker.
+thesillyzebra But then wouldn't you only have 4 left?
I met a woman who did his hair and makeup. Said he is very wise and "doesn't suffer fools." At the end of the day, he's no better than anyone else.
One of the best graham norton shows ever. I was like bill murray, weeping with laughter
This show really good, after a few beers etc. Murray is not of this world today. Because his sense of humour goes down badly with today's actors who don't get him. A brilliant actor & makes it all too easy. This story is fantastic, I'm trying to find this book..!
Oh Bill...I have loved this man since his first day on SNL. Much love to you, Bill.
Hi I just wanted to thank you again for being so supportive and following me on my journey. I love inspiring and encouraging others. People like you help me to keep showing up! Hope you are having an amazing day!❤
I need to start learning how to tell stories like Bill Murray, so captivating
First you need to start living the stories like Bill Murray
I KNEW Murray was going to mention this book from the start. I actually bought mine just after the reissue in 2005 and a week before I flew to Japan. Been here ever since and that little book has gotten me into a lot of trouble... some good some bad :P
When I lived in Istanbul I had the Turkish edition--- it's every bit as useful and amazing as Bill Murray claims.
What is the name of the book?
Did you even watch the video?
Adam Zillin Yes, and if you are asking me, I would like to get a confirmation? Is that bad?
I got the 1 and 2 but my friend borrowed both of them and never returned.. i need to buy them again..
The only thing that comes to mind when watching this clip is how brilliantly reserved the Japanese are.
Bill Murray is really hilarious that was the best episode of the graham norton show
This is definitely one of the best episodes...why is it not on the Graham Norton channel whatsoever? Apart from a Matt Damon montage? Quite simply, get these three on Graham Norton again...along with Paloma Faith. There's definitely alot more for Bill Murray to be asked. It doesnt necessarily have to be an alterior motive of plugging a new film...simply an interview in general right? Definitely dont see nearly enough of Bill Murray these days. Maybe an 80s Superstars episode...Murray,...Schwarzenegger, DeVito...Hawn and Russell..together...Surely entirely feasible right?
The world is a better place with Bill Murray in it. Most of the time.
Bill
Omg I bought that book 15 years ago when I was first learning Japanese. I actually used it a hell of a lot and I've no shame in admitting it got me laid once or twice. Some of the other funny delights it has is 'You can ask me anything you want except the colour of my underwear' - 'what cave did your ugly ass crawl out from?' - not to mention the Japanese for every sex position there is. How weird to see Bill Murray himself bringing it up in an interview. And to top it off the guy that wrote it is now some bigwig ex-navy public safety director LOL! Imagine if he was giving some serious lecture to coordinators on how to deal with emergency 911 calls and Bill Murray turns up and screams (in Japanese) "I really don't love you anymore, so I'm going to change my phone number!"
How do you say the phrase in romanji? I tried google translation but it didn't work out...
Just off the top of my head-
'Anta dokka no dougu kara waitan da?'
'What cave did you crawl out from?'
'Ore ni nandemo kitte ee yo-- shitagi no iro igai'
'You can ask me anything but the colour of my underwear'
This isn't phonetic by the way- just romaji like you asked
+EvilKris thank you! But do you have the one when he said the yakuza thing?? The "Who do you think you're talking to?"
+ Anis Mohd Arif
Dare-ni mukatte mono itten-dayo?
What is the name of the book?
"Lippy" really did tickle him as did the phrase "go the loo" in The Man Who Knew Too Little. Bill if your reading this please visit the UK more. You would be so funny on all our talk shows. Very strong couch. Cracking episode. Well done BBC.
I am crying from laughing so hard. His delivery is too good
I really liked his Japanese though......
unfortunately he didn't say the phrase correctly. It's meant to be だれに向かって言ってんだよ. But what he said was a mumbled and jumbled version of this, adding in unnecessary syllables. So it's likely that the Japanese man ran away from Bill Murray, not because he was frightened, but because he realised he was talking to a foreigner who's Japanese was poor. That being said, Bill Murray's pronunciation is pretty good. But you can tell that he doesn't understand the grammar of what he's saying, but rather attempted to just learn the sounds of the words which resulted in making a mistake.
***** reading through the other comments it actually looks like those "extra syllables" I was hearing was MEANT to be the word もの. But Bill Murray misspoke and said もと, which doesn't make sense. So yeah.... his Japanese accent is good, but he made a mistake when speaking.
***** I was going to say his "Japanese accent" But forgot to type it xDxD
And I don't have that much knowledge of Japanese either..... I watch Anime and it sounded right to me.....
+DashiSmash It was cause hes drunk here haha, so slurring
+Anthony McDerpingston He probably remembered it better when he first learned it as well. Lost in translation was like over ten years ago. Sometimes you forget how to say something over time.
You have NO.EXCUSE!!! Love you!
Hi I just wanted to thank you again for being so supportive and following me on my journey. I love inspiring and encouraging others. People like you help me to keep showing up! Hope you are having an amazing day!❤

American talk show host: "I hear you had an interesting encounter with (insert name) at (insert location). Is that true?"
Guest star: "Um, yeah. It's an uncomfortable story."
American talk show host: "Oh no, I understand. I won't pry."
GRAHAM NORTON, ON THE OTHER HAND
Graham Norton: "I hear you had an interesting encounter with (insert name) at (insert location). Is that true?"
Guest star: "Um, yeah. It's an uncomfortable story."
Graham Norton: "Oh, well let's hear it."
XD
Bill Murray is a ledgend! :D
I ♥️ BILL
One word, Legend!!:)
Bill is very cute!
Legendary!
Bill Murray man you make us laugh...
I always had it in my head that Bill Murray was probably good at playing jerks because he was one. His fun little story about being inconsiderate and then downright threatening toward a fellow guest at a Japanese hotel confirmed it for me.
it's even worse if you know how thin walls are in Japan and how considerate their culture of others comfort
BM is a national treasure.
I love BM
Love this.
What a story!
The video was half over by the time I realized Matt Damon was sitting next to him lol Bill Murray is amazing!
Is it just me but when he said Dare-ni mukatte ittendayo, he looks kinda like Beat Takeshi
+gdanendrah Both are masters of deadpan.
Tonycaveman exactly
The phrasebook is real I found it in a Japanese bookstore in the foreign section. I read some lines to my Japanese friend and he was so shocked
I HAVE to trie this at least one time
High stakes game
+Git Man ik, but it'll work either successful, or horribly wrong
Dude, I used that phrasebook when I lived in Isahaya!
I totally have that book!
I had "How to Make Out in Korea" when I travelled to shoot in Seoul the first time. Too funny!
I live in Tokyo and I've got this book! LOL
i like how he talk for me its like tom hanks
Classic!
LOL! I have that book. I picked it up in Tokyo, It was such a fun best seller that I could not resist.
lol i saw him using it on a lost in translation behind the scenes video.
Muray looks like SONO with his hat! lol
ビルマーレイの帽子は園子温らしいね!www
1:23 "Who is it you think you see?"
Bill Murray has very similar speaking voice to Brian Wilson of Beach Boys.
if the guy he said the phrase to in the hotel wouldve been yakuza himself, this story probably wouldnt have turned out like this
funny as hell tho :D
Imagine being the guy that got threatened by Bill Murray 😂
i so wanna learn that phrase now
Matt Damon always good to see you baby!
Bill is still the only comedian that can walk into a room full of people, and they start smiling! He's the best!!
Bill ' fucking ' Murray, the Chivery lives on.............Gunga Galunga
kcco
I wish he had shown up at my wedding...to talk me out of it.
発音凄すぎる!!!!
Dare-ni mukatte mono itten-dayo... Still trying to memorize this, but usually I catch myself saying 'dare-ni mutatte mono ichen-dayo' or 'dare-ni mutatte moto itten-dayo'. It's weird learning bits of another language lol Still a funny thing to learn. I don't imagine I'll ever say it in Japan though, I'd probably end up accidentally saying to a REAL Yakuza and then soon have my intestines relieved of the problem of being trapped in my stomach. My head might decide to go and see a bit of Japan as well, perhaps a nice lake lol
Bill Murray can get away with it because he's a comedian, he's famous, he's rich, he's also 6'2 as well as incredibly interesting in how he conducts himself. Granted I'm 6', but what self respecting man would tolerate some young white guy from a country on the other side of the world to come to his nation and start puffing his chest out, even if it's just for a laugh. Some might find it funny, but over use of the joke would soon find a recipient with not so keen a sense of humour, I imagine. Or maybe like Canada, the vast majority of Japanese are incredibly nice and easy going. They might find my butchered attempts at utilizing the Japanese language similarly as funny as in Jackie Chan's dialogue in movies that he made back when he was still learning English lol "Do you understand the worlds that are coming out of, from my mouth?!"
What the fuck dude
ColdSpark824 Dare-ni mukatte mono itten-dayo?... lol jk, but what's the problem?
NormanMatchem I believe it is "moto" not "mono". Listen more carefully, though I could be wrong.
Devon Bolsch If you listen closely to the footage taken during his filming of 'Lost in Translation' where he first mentions it, and also if you look up online about the saying, it's all 'mono'. Perhaps it had been a couple years since he read and said the words, but I'm pretty sure it's 'mono' and not 'moto'. Good ear though, he definitely mistakenly says 'moto' in the video.
NormanMatchem Ah. Ok. The phrase itself sound pretty threatening either way. Lol. But obviously, the correct way, "mono" sounds better. I just though it was "moto" and not "mono". But thanks for clarifying that for me. I wanted to know how to say it as well yet I couldn't find out of it was "mono" or "moto" because of the way he said it in this video versus your comment. XD Thanks again! And did you ever end up memorizing the phrase?
i would like to see the mr murray & mr duwall together in this great show.
the monument's men is a testament to the FACT that no matter how many stars you cram into a film it can still suck.
