- A major search for missing British teenager Jay Slater fell flat as just six volunteers turned up to help.
Spanish police had called for people with mountaineering experience to join a one-day “massive search” for the 19-year-old on Saturday.
Mr Slater went missing in Tenerife on June 17 and the Guardia Civil has been searching for him since.

Quite the strategy, I must say.

That's not fair. The police announcement made it clear they wanted experienced mountaineers. They obviously don't want to lose anyone else, those deep ravines are 10 times bigger that any hill in uk. I doubt if many/ any of the relatives have that sort of experience.

People saying its because the police want people who know the land and terrain, but if it was my son, I'd be searching everywhere I can. If I'm not allowed up in the mountain, I'm searching every resort, bar, knocking on doors, asking locals, I'd do anything I can, and I wouldn't need 35k+.

This whole story is beyond a joke now. Why would everyone turn up to help? Even putting aside his character he's been missing nearly 2 weeks, last seen off his head on dehydrating stimulants slipping down the mountainside with zero water. Its just a body search at this point.

At least this family are getting some help and some publicity, My nephew Gary Burns went missing in August 2016 in Iclemar in Turkey and we have had no help whatsoever, so he is still missing and no one cares.

Please compare pictures of the convicted Jay Slater in the Lancashire Post article: Eight handed community and rehabilitation orders over attack 4th August 2023, with any other pictures of missing Jay. It is the same person.
The volunteers needed to be from volunteer associations or qualified, being experts in the terrain around Masca, as it is a rugged, rocky area, full of slopes, with a multitude of ravines, etc. The Guardia Civil were very clear that they were not asking just for members of the public
