As a side note - Though Richard Wagner died long before the advent of motion
pictures, I consider him the Father of the modern movie soundtrack. His
'Leitmotif' structure (and even some of his musical style) was borrowed
by every movie soundtrack composer from Max Steiner to John Williams.
If you listen carefully to this excerpt from Die Walküre "Wotan's
Farewell / Magic Fire Music," you will hear exactly how much Max Steiner
borrowed from Wagner for the sound track of "Gone With The Wind".
This is one of Wagner's most sublime moments as a composer.

The man was incredible at his peak. The richness and power of his voice in what is normally a basso role is awesome...

Setting Tibbet aside for one moment.... listen to that orchestra under Stokowski! Mein Gott!! This is why music exists.

His great talents are wasted on Wagner. He was fantastic in such a variety of music. I have his films Metropolitan and Under Your Spell where he sings to creatures in an outside bath. Fine actor as well.

Tibbett in his prime here & although the entire role with its low tessitura for a voice like Tibbett‘s was not really an option he sings this Abschied as beautifully as his Wolfram which was his great complete Wagner role. He had always wished to have a go at Hans Sachs & this might have worked well for him in his best vocal period but Friedrich Schorr had a monopoly on this role at the MET at this time. Unfortunately after 1940 Schorr was no longer up to it & neither was Tibbett by then.

Bought a Tibbett CD with this recording, but they cut the exquisitely sad intro and began at 1:04. Disappointed
