Marilyn Martin - Night Moves

  • Best known for her duet with Phil Collins, "Seperate Lives", Marilyn Martin also had a minor hit with this song in 1986. It's a shame that she didn't make it bigger (and that this vid hasn't been upped before).
She's a realtor now (according to wikipedia).

What kept this song from making it big?
3:00 - 3:30. It is that awful guitar solo. The rest of the song is great, but that drags it down very far.

Tough competition in the music business, 1986 or otherwise. Also, Atlantic Records only released the CD version in 1986 in Japan for some unknown reason (it has since been released on cd in 2005 from Wounded Bird in North America). Had it been sold in North America on CD at the time (cassette and LP were available though), might have caught on better, as it would have reached more CD review magazines for example, might have been played more in high end music stores which were promoting the fairly new CD players, might have been played on more radio stations using the CD formate, it might have spread the word more

@@backslash68 Miami Vice was big back then & this was a very Miami Vice kind of song & I think it was used in the series. Her problem was, she wanted to be a more "pure" Madonna type look but only let her "dark side" come out in her singing. If she'd had dark hair & not been so skinny, she'd had a much better career. IMHO. But considering 1986, this video is 9 outta 10.

The producer of this video did an excellent job, I like the concept of the video, its drama, mysticism and how the scenes were directed according to the song. Marilyn Martin, looks spectacular, her body language, expressive and emotional gestures in each scene of the video, it's amazing! It is pure perfection, its unique voice quality to handle different tones of voices is amazing. I think she was not given enough exposure in the industry as an artist, because she would have been more successful than she had. It is unfortunate when artists with unique quality and talent are not given the recognition that they deserve in an increasingly incomprehensible industry in valuing the "quantity" more than the quality! Marilyn Martin, an artist who has left her mark on her musical legacy and has no comparison with any female artist of her time, she is unique!

What's even more ridiculous is that in 1986 her self titled CD only had a Japan release, with 2 bonus tracks not on the North American LP or cassette. In 2005, finally, Wounded Bird put this CD out in North America (without the 2 bonus tracks), is out of print and expensive to find
Also of note, Joe Lynn Turner sang this song in 2006 for the Sunstorm project

OMG I remember this song from the 80s. I was a kid and I liked it until the final moments when the dark atmospheric keyboards appeared at the ending. It was kinda creepy for me.
This got a lot of radio play back in the day. A great song that is becoming a cult classic, better late than never.

I was searching for some unspecified background music I heard on “Heartbreak ridge” and “Top gun” and it led me here. Beautiful song, brings back memories.

Today I was at a Thanksgiving type dinner at a diner with my mom and stepdad when this song just popped in my head and I haven't heard it since it was released. No one at the table knew the song, including my other half so I had to find the video for him to see. Still loved it all these years later just don't know why it popped into my head
    now.

OMG I LOVED this song and the entire album actually. What a video!! I'm so glad she got away with it in the end!!! Marilyn Martin deserved to be huge - I loved her second album as well.

An underrated and underappreciated song that should have been a monster hit. Still here in 2022, on my playlist since '86.

Most likely been since it was a hit that i've heard it. Whatever happened to this beautiful woman with an amazing voice?!?!

The first time that I heard this song, was Joe's cover of it. I loved it. I didn't find out that it was a cover until this week, when I stumbled upon someone's list of 80s songs that he/she thought should have been bigger hits. This song ranked high on the list. When I watched the video, I loved her voice, and ended up buying some of the songs from her two albums, including this one, of course. She co-wrote the song with John Parr.
