Squacco Heron (Ardeola ralloides, rääkkähaikara) 26.7.2024 at Pidisjärvi, Nivala, Mid Finland

The bird was found two days ago and was initially identified as a Cattle Egret (Bubulcus ibis, lehmähaikara). It was correctly identified the following day.
I arrived at the site only to find that the bird had disappeared. The video begins 30 minutes later, at 00:31 am, when I spotted a suitable white object perched on a bush by the lake, 350 meters away. Initially, it was impossible to discern whether it was the Squacco Heron or just a plastic bag, especially since it didn’t register on the thermal camera. However, after some time, the white spot began to move, confirming it was indeed the bird. This sighting is significant as the last twitchable Squacco Heron in Finland was seen 34 years ago, making this a lifer for many birdwatchers.
