    Just an FYI- Early every Spring, I fertilize my ALREADY established lawn once with 'Starter lawn fertilizer'. Its high phosphorus content promotes the strong root system, which you don't get in a regular fertilizer. I follow with a regular lawn fertilizer a few weeks after that, and throughout the rest of the year, as recommended. Makes a huge difference, grass is thick, green, and healthy. Neighbors ask me what I did. They ya go!

    The liquid stuff works good for actually loosening the soil, but a huge advantage of core aeration is that the plugs bring beneficial bacteria up to the surface where they can break down thatch.

    Greene County Fert Air8 is what I use. All their products are top notch and they have a product for just about anything. The founder of the company has a youtube channel with a good mix of content and shows you how to use the products. Lawncology on youtube if you wanted to check it out. This wont replace a good mechanical aeration, but using it throughout the year it will certainly help the soil!

  • @jimbobba0233
    @jimbobba0233 4 роки тому +6

    Solid video, love the channel. I also use lots of N-ext products and very happy with them. Air-8 is $24/gal but you need to order 4-5 gallons minimum (which keeps the price low) not a bad option for a small lawn or stand alone product. I also use GS fish & kelp in the garden and they work well. Thanks for sharing this new product and option, going to give it a try.

    • @jimbobba0233
      @jimbobba0233 4 роки тому

      I switched for Alaskan once I found GS as well. I’m all about minimum inputs and low cost for both lawn & garden. Other than my compost from my waste (coffee grounds, grass, cardboard, etc) all I use all year is OMRI Chick n’ poo (menards $10) at planting and the fish & kelp every 2-3 weeks. They both last 2 seasons. I have more veggies than we can eat (5 people) with tomatoes producing through October in Michigan. Definitely recommend, good luck!

    SPF 80 or if I am recalling correctly produced by the Amway Corporation was the best I ever tried it really worked on causing the dry ground to actually absorb the water. That was years ago so I am not sure if it's still around it used to come in like a pretty good sized container and it was concentrated so it would cover a hugely large amount of ground several times overs. I found it from a farmer that loved it and would buy it in 50 gal drums every year. I tried on my lawn and he was correct. It works.Irrigation is still about a lot of water but the more soil that absorbed water the less waisted on evaporation.

      @@colleencatalano3547 Colleen, this is the recipe I've used for years. You need a 20 or 10 gal hose end sprayer and apply at 1 tbs per gal.
      · 1 can of beer (not light beer. Provides carbohydrates to the microorganisms)
      · 1/2 cup ammonia (regular household strength, a quick shot of nitrogen)
      · 1/2 cup Dawn (not anti-bacterial, not platnium, nothing with pine oil or scents)
      Balance in water

    • @mjanssen1255
      @mjanssen1255 2 роки тому +2

      Soap is not an equal substitute for many reasons. I will keep this short and just say that a true ionic surfactant designed to break up surface tension, will yield much better results without compromising turf chemistry.
      Soap is nowhere near equal to a true liquid aerator, not even close. If you need results, skip the soap and go with core aerating as well as liquid aerating.

    With regards to the Ortho Dial-and-Spray. The number on the dial basically equates to how much product gets sucked up in 2 minutes time. So if you can cover that 500 sq ft EVENLY in that 2 minutes, you're good. Otherwise you're going to either going to apply too heavy (sprayed too slow) or too light (sprayed too fast).
    Make it easy...measure the total amount of product you need to apply into the sprayer (markings on the side of the canister), fill the rest with water, set the dial on a somewhat lower setting and evenly dispense the entirely of what you measured out. It's a LOT easier to evenly dispense a product going slower until you have an idea how fast you need to spray. It ensures you are applying the CORRECT amount of the product, not bound by the exact time needed to dispense it.

    • @kyleburraston2980
      @kyleburraston2980 3 роки тому +2

      I have had 2 of those ortho sprayers (took the first one back) but they just don't work even close to what the dispensing quantities listed on the gague say. I sure wish they did, but my second one is no better than the first one that I returned.

    • @storcutt72
      @storcutt72 3 роки тому +2

      @@kyleburraston2980 agreed. Mine got clogged continually after anywhere from 10-20 seconds of use. I shook the heck out of the bottles every time before filling and it did not matter. This product kept clogging the filter on the intake.

    • @MistaGooch
      @MistaGooch 3 роки тому +2

      For those of you having trouble with clogged hose end sprayers. Try straining your product first before adding it to sprayer. Those little straws will get clogged a lot if not. Just pick up a mesh strainer from Amazon or your local dollar store (Or steal one from your wife's kitchen. Just be sure to keep it in the garage after use) and strain into a bucket. Also, it helps to use a drill with a mixing bit to mix product thoroughly before straining.

I've had issues with hose end sprayers but when I got a new hose it worked perfect. However, I wonder if taping would help? I usually have a quick change fitting because I switch back and forth but I take those off when I do the hose end sprayers. I'm still fighting my 6 year old new build lawn. Just when I think I've got it, something else throws the equation off. lol

    According to the University of Colorado (and many other universities) liquid aeration only helps with the water absorption. It does not increase gas exchange nor decrease soil density the other two requirements of true aeration

    • @SilverCymbal

      Yes I have seen their blog post, which is just that, no actual study, I have seen no others. The key phrase in that post *There is no indication that any of these products has ever been scientifically evaluated for effectiveness* I think that's true, no university has tested it. I also fully agreed with them which is why I wanted to see some actual proof that it did something, hence the video & test. As always, I encourage you to not believe me or my video, make your own decision but what can't be denied that on various brands of these sold on Amazon & elsewhere there are literally thousands of positive reviews, can they all be fake or are literally thousands of people have no idea?

    Used the SoftSoil and the sprayer at your recommendation. Just wanted to warn everyone that it has a lot of sediment or particulate in it and it will gum up the intake filter really fast. You may want to filter the gallon of SoftSoil through a fine sieve or something first or you will literally unclog the filter screen a half dozen times.

    Awesome idea! Pretty much what I needed I for my beds and I’ll try in the lawn also. Some of the beds I transplanted some hydrangea and the soil there just isn’t good and the plant is struggling. I take it this would work well as a soil conditioner. I see Doc advocating the use of ground up chicken feed to add bio nutrients into the soil and to aid in some composting.

      Doubt that helps much, but better than nothing. Tide detergent helps lawns thrive. Applying laundry detergent, such as Tide, to the lawn helps to regrow areas of dying grass by allowing moisture to soak into the ground. In addition, one of the main ingredients in Tide is phosphates, which plants love.
