Love this list Jess! Scarlet Witch is the one book that really surprised me that I liked it so much so I'm glad it made your honorable mentions list. These are the types of books that need all the word of mouth that they can get!
right on, Saz! SW was my biggest surprise last year too!!
Your Batman picks on the video is top-notch. The Batman Knight is really good too.
Thank you! I'm glad you like them too!

Recap by Tammy AI
wow - this is a good summary by AI - especially the financial advisor stuff at 17:14 LOL
I'm so glad you made this video, we are so spoiled with SO MANY amazing books right now! Always happy for more Si Spurrier, too! And I can't wait for the occult/magic books, at this point it might have to be a miniseries because, again, there are so many awesome books in the genre! You have such great taste in all genres Jess, if you love something, I know that means it's BOSS!
Thank you Mallory and lol, yeah, the occult/magic video may be a 3 parter at least! I'm going to have to read Books of magic omni 1 at the very least and that'll take a month lol.
ALWAYS Love the reviews/details! Ordered the ones I didn’t have. Please Please do a PART 2!
Dude! This IS part 2 lol!!!
But thank you so much for watching and the compliment!
Ooh psyched for your indie content this year if you can squeeze some in.
I have plans... lol
Well, Jess, guess I know what what’s on my next to buy list. The Dark Knights of Steel and Gotham City Year One. Thanks for an awesome list bud. Best, Kam.
thanks for watching and lmk what you think of those books!!
OMNIDOG!!! That Gotham City Year One is one of the best books of 2023. Too bad it didn't sell well because I wanted to see more of it. Thanks for mentioning that one. Maybe if the book sells out DC will change its mind. Get the book, y'all! Great Video as always. Cheers!
I don’t understand why it didn’t sell, the book got a great feedback
yeah I loved it and reread it a couple of times! Sad that it didn't sell!
@@andrecrispim3209 I can't explain it either especially with Tom King writing a short series on crime - that seems like what everybody has been asking for
I have almost all these honorable mentions in my collection and I'd say they certainly deserved to be talked about ! Thank you for the video.
Oh nice!! I'm glad you agree! Thanks for watching!
Great video Jess as always !!! So many great reads of 2023. I've read'ed digitally via single issues Batman/Superman: World's Finest by Mark Waid and Dan Mora it is so so good and plan on picking up the 2 hardcovers soon along with Mark Waid's run on The Flash in Omnibus format. Keep up the great work Jess with your videos love your content !!!
thank you Kenny!! It's always great to see you in the chat !
Aside of suggesting cool and great comics in both videos (10 favorites of 2023 and this one with honorable mentions of 2023) I think that we should all acknowledge the amazing shirts that Jess wears in both videos!
Hi Jess! Happy to see "Noir Burlesque" there, I have got it but not read it yet! Hope it is decent storywise, because the art looks amazing...
I am pretty sure that (with a little luck) you will love both european and indie comics tha you will check and read in 2024!
Take care...
thank you for the fashion applause!! I appreciate that a LOT! I am determined to read a lot more this year so I'm hoping I can get to all the indie & European books that I want to!
I like the idea of noir comics; I really want to read the Gotham Central omni.
Gotham Central is one of the best books DC has ever published! I hope you love it!
Thanks for the video!
Thank you for watching!! Always appreciate it!
Thanks for saving the orphans Mr. Bondvillain
Hahaha thank you for picking up on that!
Always love these favorite reads videos Jess. Wish i had half the memory as you because i would have forgotten half the characters and plots to books i have read lol
haha I'm glad you like these videos! But I did have to go over each one before the video since I read them 6 months ago LOL
I think Chip's Batman run really benefits from reading The Knight, Year One, Dark Knight Returns, the Morrison run, and Tower of Babel. At first, I was lukewarm on his Bat work but over the course of it, the synthesis of these iconic elements of Batman mythos with enough new ideas to keep the story moving really resonated with me
that's a really good point and will be something I mention going forward - Zdarsky does pull from a lot of Bat history! Thank you!
@@OmnidogsVault I've been reading it monthly, you'll want to read the three jokers (I promise he handles it well, as someone who isnt a fan of the three jokers concept) and maybe some of the joker stuff from new 52 for the next collection of his stuff. He's doing Joker: Year One
@@stephenjohnson9745 omfg. You’re going to make me read Three Jokers?!? Fml. lol.
@@OmnidogsVault chip fixes it, but to fix the problem you gotta read about the problem
@@OmnidogsVaultoh wait, there is another arc between the joker stuff and volume two. Gotham War will come first. Under the Red Hood and any Bat/Cat relationship and bat family stuff would be the pre-reading, if one wants to add contextual Batman stories to that one, but Gotham War works just as well with or without a major background other than Zdarsky's stuff as long as you have a general idea what Batman's general relationship to these other characters is
Nice list. Batman: The Knight is a story that I really wanted to be writen, but I would have preferred it to be a 25 issues story entirely focused on Bruce's challenges during that time. Unfortunately, The Knight focuses too much on his relationship with Ghost Maker, which doesn't ruin it, but makes it a lot less interesting to me (and I personally don't care about Ghost Maker.)
The ongoing Zdarsky Batman is a good and enjoyable book, but as much as I like Batman R.I.P., I really don't want to see more of Zur-En-Arrh. The worst sin of his run is that it confirms Three Jokers as canon... even though there were hints of it since the beginning of Rebirth, we were all better off leaving that story in Black Label limbo.
Blaze is the one I didn't like. There are several small things I don't like about the book, the tone in general and the art are not the best for me, but there's also two big things. The first one is the treatment of Superman. I am not against a story where some enemy kills Superman, it's actually a simple way to show how big of a deal is the enemy (like in King in Black,) but do we really needed to see Superman broken and brain dead? The second thing I really hated was the ending, the last page in particular. Spurrier thinks he's being funny, but he's actually mocking the genre. I didn't care for it.
I appreciate your well written opinion on Blaze!
The fact that the books on this list that I have read I’ve greatly enjoyed make me excited for those on the list I haven’t yet. Thanks for all the recommendations Jess. Fantastic video 👏
WOOOO!! I'm so happy that you dug the video! And the books! thank you!!
Leaning into the "Adorable" OmniDog with that thumbnail lol
this was directed by Upper Management so that may have something to do with it ;-)
Great selection👏! Thank you Jess!
Thank you for watching Tolga! Always great to see your name pop up!!
Love that you are diving into European and Independent comics this year. P.S. Love that shirt on you, gonna need to pick up moonknight later this year
yeah you will dig the MK omni! And thank you for the shirt applause!
hey dude good show! 🖐😃
thank you buddy!!
I'm a huge Tom Taylor fan too! Can I ask if that dark knights of steel hardcover is oversize or standard size?
It's standard size, unfortunately. I'm hoping we'll soon see an OHC with all 12 issues.
@bryceabraham2903 damn! Okay, fingers crossed and thanks for the info! 😀
yeah as already has been answered, it's a SHC. But I have no patience when it comes to these kinds of books - I want them NOW to read lol
